1st PC Config: Celeron 2.4GHz; 512MB Ram; 2 WesternDigital 80/120 GB hard disks; Windows XP pro with SP2; CD-RW and a DVD player

Softwares: M$ office 2003; pcAnywhere; RAdmin; emule; BorlandC++ v5.0; powerDVD; Ahead Nero v6.0.3 ultra edition; M$ Mappoint;TmpGenc dvd author; Zonealarm; Norton AV ..you name it ..prolly got it!



2nd PC Config: P4 2.4GHz; 386MB Ram; 40GB seagate HD; XP Pro w/ SP2; CD drive and DVD R+W @ 8x

Softwares: some of the above mentioned from PC1.



Other "Accesories": iPaq with USB pc cradle(use it to load driving directions/maps for my trips);Linksys BEFSR41 router for internet sharing; Westell DSL modem; Grandtec Ultimate PC2TV wireless converter (transmits my desktop to the 32" duraband tv in the living room, which comes in handy with the wireless keyboard and mouse, yaaay I dont have to get my a$$ off the couch now) 5.1 channel wireless audio transmitter to the surround sound in the living room (I pity my neighbours)



Net connection:

Home~ ADSL; 3mbps down/380 kbps up (boasts the ISP) ..but I actually get speeds of 2.7mbps down/330 kbps up



Office:

XP pro w/ SP1; P4 2.5; 768MB Ram; 40GB HD; with a 100mbps LAN.

I was trying to work on a group to r3l3as3 and $har3 telugu movies ..not a shabby idea huh?

Yes. v can try a new thread for the File Sharing s/w utilities and the various tools we use. (we can also include shareaza, kazaa lite, etc etc. apart from emule)

I end up paying almost 2-3K per month for my reliance connection (used only for net access).

For almost 1/3 of this cost 20Mbps connections are provided in South Korea.

Downloads speeds are of the order of 10-13 Mbps... No jokes.

For this one this one thing... I MISS Korea.

and san, how do u manage the mental shift between a PC and an apple? i had a PC on my rig for some imaging software along with a Mac for a week, i just went nuts not knowing what to do on what.

...thats why i hate unix and prefer windows....b4 i hear crap abt how crappy WinOS is, i'd like to say that i love Windoze coz of extreme userfriendliness n ease of operation...and it meets my requirements perfectly....i am not running any large scale internet server in my PC and neither am i running critical apps 24X7....

unix is preferred for running critical apps and servers (like web servers) coz its more stable. but for a normal user running normal applications (like majority in the world), its serves no purpose....Windows is easier to learn n operate and majority of the apps available run on it.



majority of the PC users in the world (home or work) use Windows and that is something....notwithstanding its faults...

shifting from windows to ne other OS is now dificult...we are so used to windows....

On a personal level I love windows ..easy to setup ..not many worries except for the dang thing to crash on you ..but they've been doing a good job getting the OS more stable ..but geez the memory it takes to run a windoze machine ..I like knoppix ..unix variable that runs just off of the CD ..no installation, no BS ..



MAC/any non-Windoze user is left to fix his own problems ..not much tech support is offered ..hard to find suitable drivers for most devices ..it will just take you eons to get a webcam working on a linux box ..I love plug and play ..and thats how I like my women too



I hate IE ..use Firefox ..so far the best browser I have found ..windows firewall pfff ..I use ZoneAlarm for that ..heard M$ is going to launch its own virus protection software and ad-aware/spybot software ..hmmmm may be thats what the "longhorn" is about ..



in any case my request would be for the keyboard manufacturers to make windows compatible keyboards ..I mean move the Ctrl; Alt; Del keys all into a same row, side by side ..and have a fourth key on the mouse for "ctl+alt+del" functionality ..coz many of us will be using it for the years to come!

The good thing about Mac OS X is that it is UNIX but with an easy to use GUI. Want to run a webserver? Simple, just tick a box on the sharing control panel and Apache is up and running. Same with ftp and ssh. Another benefit is much less exposure to viruses and worms. Downsides are lack of games if that's your thing. Also the hardware costs more - but the new mac mini has changed that!

Using the BSNL DSL connection. Damn neat it is! They give you a 256 kbps line with a minimum speed of 100 kbps and the max we get these days is about 400 kbps. It is damn cheap, too. Me recommends this one to anyone still looking.

Yep, I mean the Data One connection. It costs Rs. 500 per month. But, you do have to invest in a DSL modem that costs two grand. You can either pay two grand up front or choose to pay a hundred bucks a month.



There is a slight catch though. Till June there is no data transfer limit. After that, the data transfer limit is 1 GB per month. But, I am guessing that 1 GB ought to be enough for most people, at least those who do not browse porn.
