Konarak temple sad and erotic

From Bhubaneswar we made two trips to Konarak temple. On first day, we went to the bus stand near the state museum. There are private buses available every 30 minutes. Bus charge between Bhubaneswar to Konarak is just Rs25/- . Conductors will invariably speak to you chewing pans. The bus goes via Pipli. Then it takes diversion from Puri road. Our private bus went via so many small small villages. We could see TRAX JEEP sort of vehicles carrying about 30 to 40 passengers in roadsides.



Finally, after 2 hours of journey we reached Konarak (KONARAK NOTIFIED AREA COUNCIL) at the afternoon. Bus stand is a deserted dry place. Instead of going up to bus stand, you can stop before only. Along the temple lane, there are hundreds of shops selling fancy and shopping items. You can bargain there and buy as low as 30% of their rate. There is a good Govt restaurant called PanthNivas just in the front side road of the temple. They collect Rs30/- for lunch. There is no Roti. Only rice. Generally, it is like south Indian lunch. There are so many private restaurants placed over there.



Then we came to the main agenda –the temple. As usual, Archaeological survey of India maintains the temple. Entry tickets is rupees 10/- per head only. Before entering inside the temple there are so many guides chased us. They ask Rs 60/- for full description. There is notice board showing the names of official guides. It is better to take official guides. In front, side entrance lion is crushing a elephant. The elephant in turn is crushing a man. The Guide told me that it indicates re-emergence of Hinduism over Buddhism. If you cross this area, you will come across the wonderful main temple. They have built this temple looking like a GIANT STONE CHARIOT. The temple is definitely bigger than Lingaraj temple of Bhubaneswar. We could see still lots of constructions over there. I could see young Labourers carrying heavy stones for repair of this temple. All over the sides, there are hundreds of nude and highly erotic sculptures. I could so many young Bengali couples, especially wives laughing with great shyness.



The Surya bagawan sculptures positioned at all sides looks like the appearance of Buddha.



Unfortunately, the main hall of the temple the Jagmohan is closed. A tablet reads in front gate, thus.

We got severely vexed, by seeing the closure of the temple. However, the front side door is excellently carved.



Erotic sculptures. The guide told me the following reason. For years together after Kalinga war, the people remained depressed forgetting Sexual acts. To induce Kama(sexual interest) in to the peoples mind the king ordered relaxed temple with erotic sculptures.



In the backside, they have kept a water reservoir that supplies cool water.



Instant photography We took photos in front of the giant wheels, and all other structures. They initially told me the rate of Rs15/- photo. Finally after two hours time, when they handed over the photos they demanded Rs30/- per photo. They told Negative costs Rs 15/- per piece. I had big fight with them. Finally I had to cry Rs100/- for five photos. So be very careful with photographers roaming around there. We could see plenty foreign tourists also. Localities take combined photographs with foreigners. They think it is an honour.



We could still see iron structures dating back to 12th century. Nobody knows the real reason for destruction of the temple. Somebody blames Portuguese. Some body say early British sea pirates stole the big magnet, which was positioned at the top of the temple. Therefore, the whole temple was collapsed. Anybody here knows the real reason for destruction??



We then came out of the temple. We reached the small museum maintained by the ASI. There I got the excellent opportunity to see the rarest and rarest of an early British photo showing the interior of the temple. I got insulted because in that photo there were two British guys inspecting the heaps of damages with their pet dog.
