Do we need celebrities?

by cogitator » Thu Jan 13, 2005 12:24 pm

ok ok... i understand the reasons of inspiration and all that... but tell me seriously - who are considered celebrities in our society now and do we really need them... do we really, fundamentally gain anything from celebrities...

Celebrities are anyone in the limelight.....actors, sports people, models, best-selling authors, chef, etc.

This is a media based world, it seems. Tv and magazines are a favorire past-time for many. Celebrities in the film and tv world are just good for entertainment value. Sportsmen can actually be someones motivation and inspiration to perform better in that sport.

Several Hollywood actors and actresses lend their name, time, money, and presence to many causes and charities. Like The 9/11 charities, the Tsunami charities, Breast-Cancer Awareness, AIDS and Stem-cell research, etc.

Do Celebrities inspire ? I don't think they do. Most of the people try to ape them rather than think what actually took them to grow into such a position.

Celebrities are people in the limelight but not those guys who are partying until the wee hours of the next day with their inherited property or parents wealth.

Celebrities are people who are in peace with themselves, they know exactly what they are doing and majorly, they are honest with themselves without having to compromise on their individuality and integrity. And whatever they do, there is minimal chance of errors. These people may not be in the limelight but they are celebrities in their own ways.

modern day celebs

by cogitator » Thu Jan 13, 2005 1:33 pm

classification of celebs may help - like the celebs who r desparate to be or become celebs - most of the entertainment industry celebs are of of no great value to ppl in society.... nothing to demean the entertainment stalwarts but they r no great shakes in terms of societal benefit.... they r definitely good at individual success being showcased...

i like a few points brought up.. celebrities are actually those who r doing their job or whatever they r doing sincerely and silently and may (or may not) be actually celebrated by others... thats a cool thought... do u know any such celebrities?

ce·leb·ri·ty : Pronunciation Key (s-lbr-t)

n. pl. ce·leb·ri·ties

A famous person.

Renown; fame.

What exactly do you mean by a celebrity who is unknown? If someone's relatively unknown, he/she isn't a celebrity at all.
