Ever since the Kanchi Shankaracharya has been arrested for the infamous murder case of Late Shankara Raman the purists Hindus of India have been on a swing ride. There were times when we felt that it is all over for the seer and now he is out on bail. If we look back the last 45 days we can find several conflicting pieces of Information that does not hold water.

Firstly the timing at which the seer was arrested was ridden with political vendetta. A pressure that Jayalalitha faced as the Chief Minister from her arch rival Karunanidhi. Apparently, the Tamil Nadu police has been pushing the fact that they had strong evidence against the seer and that they were just waiting for an order from the high-up to arrest. Meanwhile, Karunanidhi has been adding weight to what was already turning into a pressure cooker environment.

On the eve of Deewali the seer was arrested amidst a boiling drama. The case then went through several variations which in certain times did favor the seer, while in most cases was more like a quick sand. It was as if, no one else was booked for murder conspiracy in the country and law needed a scapegoat. Everything looked so blown out of proportion. The elder seer Jayendra Saraswati spent several days in the Vellore jail and soon he was a happening subject for coffee table discussions that several TV news channels profited with. The matter with Sri Jayendra Saraswati was escalated till the apex court which was widely known and that several big-wigs were representing the seer in the court arguments. In the meantime, the nation got to see the junior seer taken into custody. Something that was on expected grounds. However, even this event has created ripples because the junior was arrested the same day his guru was released on bail! Now, what are the odds of this happening? Guru is released and Junior is arrested. Today, the who’s who of the Kanchi Mutt is arrested. Because one man was murdered and the Tamil Nadu government has no real clue of which direction to proceed.

Having been witness to roller coater events, I am confident that law is very efficient in India. That no one is above law. What makes me wonder is why on earth do we perform this stage managed drama of blowing things out of proportion. Why is it that 30 participants in Bihar assembly were asked taken into custody in criminal charges and it was all done in such a low profile manner, while a seer was arrested and it is sensation and interesting news.

In middle-east the law is stronger and the advocates of law are more vocal about everyone following law and rules. However, the treatment to turn of events that would unfold if a religious leader is arrested will be very sensitive and not sensational as we get to see in India.

The last time I heard from the media was that Ad spot rates during Kanchi news went up by 20%

I don't know why these seers have to get into this kind of mess. These sort of incidents make us feel ashamed of our people.
