Internet Connections Used

by Just Another Human » Thu Jan 13, 2005 9:21 pm

Just to know what fellow netizens use for their cyber journey - Is it work or home ? Dial Up or LAN or Cable or Broadband ? What Speeds ? How is the Performance, etc. etc.

Also, the PC configurations, software used, etc. etc.

Hope this thread will spread knowledge about these stuff in excess that it will be spilt all over ;-)

Me First

by Just Another Human » Thu Jan 13, 2005 9:33 pm

Let me start with mine

Both at work and home, I use the net.

At Home, I have a very old PIII 375 MHz / 256 MB RAM / 40GB + 10GB HDD (But it's a very good one though! It's been enduring me for the past 5 years LOL). And the connection I use is a local cable connection and till today, never got any clue which type of connection it is - whether it's Broadband, ADSL, cable !!!! Speed ? Wo Kya Hota Hai bhaai - The speed is slower than a bullock cart most of the times :-( and if it's mood is good, its speed catches upto the bullock cart.

OS - WIn XP Pro

SW - Off XP Pro and I keep on experimenting a lot of other things (read messing) I have ripped apart my PC a lot of times and in the process, hurt it very badly :-( Also, I have changed almost every part of it except the motherboard and the processor. Other softwares ?? I will talk about them in due course as we all open up...

At work, as it's an MNC - it's the normal - wired LAN - no complaints :-) But the OS is Win 2K though - No other browsers - Only IE. Absolutely no other software except MS Office 2003 :-( That's it. Wish I had the same speed at home. Gawd! Give me the Speed!

Home: P III 1 GHz/ 256 MB RAM/ 40 GB Hard Drive/ some dabba Graphics Card

OS : Win XP Home Edition

Net : Cable connection from a local provider, speed at approximately 56 - 64 kbps
Things are supposed to happen the way they happen. And the reason they happen the way the happen is because you try to make them happen in a certain way and may or may not be succesful.

a dumb answer: we call it Cable Internet. in many download sites, we get to choose download options as usually "Cable/DSL" so i guess they r the same :D

What is distributed in India as Cable internet is not really cable internet except for a couple of providers. Most of the cases, its an extended LAN and is a far cry from Broadband.

I'm having great hopes from BSNL's DSL service that is being launched tomorrow.

As for my internet connectivity, I don't have a comp at home. At work, I have a sada hua P-III (all my team members work on the latest P-IVs, but I'm stuck with this dinosaur as it contains a lot of important data and I'm not finding the time or maybe the mood to back it up for my system to be replaced.). The internet connection is very good though. We have multiple 2mbps lines and I get pretty fast connection speeds.

Back at Hyd I had a PIII with Win 98 using Unlimited Cable Internet.

I regularly get speeds of upto 60 KBps and sometimes even faster....

Now at home I use BSNL's dialup connection that gives me a measly speed

of around 10 Kbps.....Nightime access is free and I've to just pay the

phonebill but circumvented that too by using Neighbour's Phone Line

Here's a bit of Interesting News:

BSNL is in the process of commissioning of a world class, multi-gigabit, multi-protocol, convergent IP infrastructure through National Internet Backbone–II (NIB-II), that will provide convergent services through the same backbone and broadband access network. The Broadband service will be available on DSL technology (on the same copper cable that is used for connecting telephone), on a countrywide basis spanning 198 cities.

In terms of infrastructure for broadband services NIB-II would put India at par with more advanced nations. The services that would be supported includes always-on broadband access to the Internet for residential and business customers, Content based services, Video multicasting, Video-on-demand and Interactive gaming, Audio and Video conferencing, IP Telephony, Distance learning, Messaging: plain and feature rich, Multi-site MPLS VPNs with Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees. The subscribe will be able to access the above services through Subscriber Service Selection System (SSSS) portal.

Key Objectives

*

To provide high speed Internet connectivity (upto 8 Mbps)

*

To provide Virtual Private Network (VPN) service to the broadband customers

*

To provide dial VPN service to MPLS VPN customers.

*

To provide multicast video services, video-on-demand, etc. through the Broadband Remote Access Server (BRAS).

*

To provide a means to bill for the aforesaid services by either time-based or volume-based billing. It shall provide the customer with the option to select the services through web server

*

To provide both pre-paid and post paid broadband services

I use Wireless Internet (WiFi) most of the time (flicked from bakra neighbours with wireless routers) or from McDonalds when I have my breakfast there.

I also go to some of the public libraries and use their cable Internet or wireless.

Debian GNU/Linux 64-bit (Sarge) is the default operating system on my 64-bit notebook, and the wireless network card doesn't have any support for 64-bit operating systems yet. That SUX!! In short, when I need to use Linux, I go to the public libraries where I can use their ethernet for my work. When I'm on Windows, I can connect to the Internet anywhere on my notebook (the gas station near my office is my favourite place).

hey guys,

For your information.

DSL - Digital Subscriber Line

ADSL - Asymmetric DSL

Both these technologies work on your regular phone and you dont need additional cabling or wiring, so the set up costs are low.

Cable internet - Gets internet on your Cable TV cables, this is one of the fastest ways to get internet. If you are getting slow internet on this one, probably your ISP is sharing one modem between 2 or more homes at the same time. The reason they do this is because they want to save on costs and the modems cost a lot. I dont know the exact price but around Rs 3000.

From what I have heard BSNL will be providing ADSL access to the general public at very low rates (according to international standards). Being the company that can reach almost anywhere in India and being around for such a long time I think they can afford the equipment and will be reliable.

What do I use? I am in Australia at the moment and use ADSL Connection provided by my Employer, coz I work in an ISP .
