I think you have those feelings towards Shaq as you haven't really followed the NBA. Shaq is towering above the rest (not anymore as had he still been with the Lakers, he wouldn't have gotten to play in the Allstar this time around - Yao Ming is much ahead) just because the rest are no more than average players. Remember that the US olympic basketball team for the Athens games, which had all its players from the current NBA roster lost to amatuer teams. Compare this with the era when players like His Airness, Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley, Larry Bird and Dennis Rodman used to play. Shaq isn't a patch on them and the adulation he gets today is more than what the others I've named above (except for the true Wizard, Jordan) used to get. That's why I say its undeserving.

I think the hype around Shaq started when he was reportadly "bought" from high school to the Loisiana State College team. I think he was paid the average salary of a NBA player while he was actually an amateur. Dunno bout the truth of that story.

His hype is also probably bcoz of the headline writers having a field day rhyming Shaq with attack, back, smack, crack etc.:)

Then came his extremely bad movies and rap CDs.

Exactly why I dislike him...more so because of the adulation he gets...totally undeserving.

I think he is the most dominating player who has ever played basketball.. not that I like him or the way he plays, but when he is on the court, he will attract a crowd from the defense and thus creates opportunities for others on his team.. He might not possess the kind of shooting skills like His Airness or the passing skills of magic.. or the dribbling skills of nash or kidd .. thats not his position and thats not his game.. he plays the Center position and he plays that well than anyone who has ever played .. If you follow keenly, every kobe needs a shaq to elevate his game but not the otherway round.. again.. this is not to compare the kind of skills but the kind of effect one has on court

my 2 cents :)

I do like his quips and sense of humour though ;) full time pass :)
