so it was another one of those success stories of NASA! I was wondering why I never saw it on discovery or...History (they always blame russia for all the accidents that happened at NASA!)

When Skylab went out of orbit, NASA predicted that it would crash in Andhra Pradesh. So all the people panicked and thought that they are gonna die but luckily it crashed into the pacific.

As an aside, Russia is way ahead of US in space and missile technology. Russia had fewer accidents too. The only human loss was when 3 russians were killed when they deorbited and that was due to oxygen loss. Compare it to US space shuttle disasters - 14 people were killed in two crashes. Today US and Russian space agencies are collabarating on International Space station - its US money and Russian technology!

I saw a prog on NGC which showed some accidents happening during the initial years of space research in russia, they were all top secret then (these videos were shown for the first time) and the undertone of the commentary was clearly....."had the russians informed us abt the dangers we wld not have had those accidents i at NASA"

why blame the russians for ur stupidity :?:

Late reply, I know but a reply nonetheless :D
Things are supposed to happen the way they happen. And the reason they happen the way the happen is because you try to make them happen in a certain way and may or may not be succesful.

Late reply, but I was very small when this happened. I remember the people who worked for us all went back to their villages and met their parents and loved ones, thinking that they would all be dead in a few days. So much confusion those days, lol!

Mebbe its a submarine Mecca.

On topic, I've seen quite a few funny names here in AP itself. Early morning one day, a policeman asked me for a lift at Jubilee Hills. I obliged and we got talking. His name happened to be Subhash Chandra Bose. I asked him if he was a bong and he said no. He happens to be a telugu and SCB is just his name (doesn't include his father's name, native village name and whatnot).

The sports page in the TOI consistently reminds me of the football great Diego Armando. Incidentally, there's a boy called Maradona (and thats really his real name) playing for one of the local school teams for some sport (basketball I think).

And there was this trainee of mine whose parents, in a fit of reverence to the Father of the nation had named him Gandhi (this too a firstname).

naming kids after prominent revolutionaries is common in AP...i know of various Subhash Chandra Boses (or plainly 'Bose'), Lenins, Stalins, Bhagat Singhs, Azads etc who are all pure telugus.

abt La Belle, there is a beauty parlor in hydbad with that name, so it definitely means 'Beautiful Lady' :D
