Quotes - 25 / 11 : Backpack New Zealand!

* Backpack New Zealand!

Image
Why New Zealand?

To many not in the know, New Zealand calls to mind kiwi fruit and sheep. Perhaps its the location, perhaps its because New Zealand rarely finds its way into the international media but with its green lands, blue seas, snow capped mountains, pristine lakes and singing birds it remains an idyllic holiday destination.

There are few places in the world which can offer so much variety within such a short distance. This is a country, where in the space of a week, you can snowboard or ski in the Southern Alps, horse trek along the beach, swim with dolphins, watch whales, climb a volcano, hike through a rainforest, sail the high seas and savour a lamb rack like no other. To anyone who enjoys the great outdoors, it's simply paradise.

The country has something to offer young and old. It's thanks to kiwi ingenuity and the adventurous spirit that many of the adventure sports were created. Those looking for an adrenalin rush can plumet from the heavens in a bungee jump, abseil gorges or mountains, handglide or go white-water rafting. The culturally and historically minded on the other hand can venture back 1000 years to the beginnings of the Maori culture and their arrival from Polynesia described in their wonderous mythical tales. With the arrival of the pioneers and the gold rush comes the next exciting era of New Zealand history and glory. To retreat into the past here is an awesome voyage into greatness of human endeavour and the indefatigability of the human spirit.

Quotes - 30 / 11 : Pretty Truth-Telling!

* Prosecution Claims Acharya "admitted to his involvement"
CHENNAI, NOV. 29. The prosecution investigating the Sankararaman murder case, today claimed that the Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, had "admitted to his involvement" in the offence.

Senior counsel K.T.S. Tulsi made the submission before Justice R. Balasubramanian of the Madras High Court when the Acharya's second bail petition came up for hearing. Arguments will continue tomorrow.

Video Recording
Opposing bail for the Acharya, Mr. Tulsi said that the police had a "contemporaneous video recording" of his confession made during his four-day police custody, and added that the prosecution was ready to play the video in court or in the Judge's Chamber.

**
Reports on Confession "Baseless," Claims Sushma Quoting Acharya
VELLORE, NOV. 29. The Kanchi Sankaracharya, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, has characterised media reports about his purported "confession" made during the police interrogation as "totally baseless and an absolute lie," according to the Bharatiya Janata Party vice-president, Sushma Swaraj, who met the Acharya in the Central Prison here on Monday.

Talking to newspersons after the half-hour meeting, Ms. Swaraj said that she was perturbed at the reports in some sections of the press and a Mumbai-based report telecast by a satellite channel that the Acharya had made a confession.

She said that she specifically enquired about the news, and "the Sankaracharya said with all the truth at his command that the report is absolutely baseless.''

"I can tell you with all authenticity that the Sankaracharya says that it is an absolute lie. No such thing ever happened," she said and appealed to the media to desist from printing or telecasting such news, which would destroy the prestige of the Kanchi Mutt, which had a tradition of 2,500 years.

Shock, Pain

Asked about the arrest, Ms. Swaraj said the case was totally false. Not only she but also the entire country was "shocked and extremely pained" at the arrest of the Acharya.

It was really sad that one of the tallest Dharmagurus had been arrested and kept in jail.

"Allies too commit mistakes," she said when she was told that the action against the Acharya was taken by a Government run by a party, which was a BJP ally at the time of the arrest. "Not only an alliance. She [the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa] was a friend," Ms. Swaraj said.

Quotes - 1 / 12 : Jewish Calendar

Image
Like the moon, the Jewish people will rise up again and light up the night.

* The first commandment the Jews were given as a people is the Mitzvah of Rosh Chodesh, the New Month:

"And God said to Moses... in the land of Egypt... This month is for you, the head of the months. First it is for you among the months of the year." (Exodus 12:1-2)

The Jewish Nation was told while still in Egypt that the month of Nissan, the month in which they would be leaving Egypt, should be for their first month, and that from now on, they, as a nation, have a responsibility to count the months and create a uniquely Jewish Calendar based on the lunar year.

Quotes - 3 / 12 : New Phishing Scams Hit Banks

*** Banks Face New Phishing Scams Nov. 30, 2004
# A new attack can result in stolen personal data even if the recipient of the fraudulent E-mail is not fooled by it.

Banks and their customers are facing new threats of phishing attacks, making it more difficult than ever to protect customers from identity theft and fraud. The increasing sophistication of phishing scams makes it harder for consumers to discern the difference between a legitimate bank e-mail message and a fraudulent one, according to industry experts.

One new type of phishing attack is particularly hard to identify. The technique can result in stolen personal data even if the recipient of the fraudulent e-mail is not fooled by it. When a bank customer simply opens the e-mail, a program attached to the e-mail by the phisher silently runs a script - even if the customer deletes the message without clicking on any embedded links. When that customer attempts to visit his or her bank's legitimate Web site - during that session or a future session - the malicious code redirects the person being phished to a fraudulent Web site.

Even a savvy Web-banking customer is vulnerable to this type of attack. Banks are educating customers on how to identify a fraudulent e-mail, but financial institutions can't do much to protect clients from simply opening fraudulent e-mail, according to Alex Shipp, senior antivirus technologist, MessageLabs (New York), a provider of e-mail security services. "It is difficult because banks don't own their clients' computers," Shipp says. "They can't do much to protect customers, but what they can do is, as soon as they learn about these sites, they can take them down," he continues. "It's more of a reactive thing; there is not much they can do proactively."

Recently, three Brazilian banks, including Unibanco (Sao Paulo), were the target of this scheme, according to Shipp. And MessageLabs expects to see more phishing attacks of this type, he says. Shipp points out that this particular scam only works on machines running Microsoft Windows, but Mac and Linux users can be affected if they use Windows updates. He suggests using only Windows systems that have had all available security patches installed.

Another phishing technique that has flourished is actually a combination of hacking and spamming. As with a traditional phishing attack, the assailant sends a fraudulent e-mail to consumers. However, this technique directs recipients to a legitimate bank Web site. With a false sense of security, users are more likely to enter personal information, which is then hacked by the fraudster, according to Susan Larson, vice president of global content, SurfControl (Scotts Valley, Calif.), a Web and e-mail filtering solutions provider.

In this type of scam, the phishers take advantage of security holes in financial institutions' Web sites, Larson explains. "Anyone doing any e-commerce is at risk," she adds. "The customers think they are on the [legitimate] site, [but the data] is really going to a fraudulent site."

SunTrust (Atlanta; $199 billion in total assets) customers were the target of this type of phishing. As soon as SunTrust became aware of the threat, the bank corrected the security flaw in its Web site, according to Hugh Suhr, a SunTrust spokesperson. The bank has a fraud alert section on its Web site and warns customers that it does not solicit personal information through e-mail. "We never ask for confidential information via e-mail," Suhr says. SunTrust also is taking proactive steps to combat phishing, but Suhr says he cannot divulge which technologies are being leveraged - for security reasons, of course.

Quotes - 7 / 12 : 'Magnificent 7' in Old City

HYDERABAD, DEC. 5. All brawn and no brain will make Jack a dull boy. How about striking a balance? Providing mental stamina along with physical fitness. A concerted effort is on to create healthy minds in healthy bodies among the youth in old city.

Two well-known groups -- Satyam, a Software Giant. and the other COVA , an NGO with strong links at the grassroots -- have teamed up to pull this feat.

The Satyam Alambana Foundation and COVA have decided to reach out to the Youth in Old City and sensitise them on various social issues.

The Project

To start with, it is planned to channelise the energy of youth frequenting gyms in the right direction. Boys in the age group of 15-25 are considered highly impulsive.

They are the ones who flex their muscles at slightest provocation. "We want them to be the ones stopping others from doing so," says COVA Chief, Mazhar Hussain.

Old City has about 70 gyms and most of the youth coming here are educated, quite a few postgraduates and graduates. But they are handicapped by diffidence and lack of communication skills and thus unable to reap the benefits of emerging career opportunities.

It is here that Satyam has decided to step in and equip the youth with that cutting edge. It will also be providing them with positive role models.

Action Plan

Balaji Utla, director, Satyam Alambana Foundation, and Mr. Mazhar, interacted with gym owners of old city on Sunday to chalk out a concrete plan of action for the youth. Representatives of the Fitness Point Gym, Shalibanda, Fitwell Gym, Attapur, Hollywood Gym, Haribowli, D.J. Gym, Devan Deodhi welcomed the Satyam-Cova initiative and offered their support.

A large number of jobs under the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) are available in Hyderabad. "If the educated youth are imparted the right skills they can get these jobs," Mr. Balaji said.

As part of the corporate social responsibility, Satyam wants to go beyond chequebook charity.

Its "Magnificent 7" Concept will now catch up with the Youth in Old City. The weekend warriors[b] as they are called will work with the gym youth and brush up their skills.

Quotes - 8 / 12: Yes Minister, the Law Applies to You Too

Quotes - 8 / 12 : Yes Minister, the Law Applies to You Too

TIMES NEWS NETWORK [TUESDAY, DECEMBER 07, 2004]

PUNE: Suresh Jain, Maharashtra State Minister for Higher and Technical Education, has chosen the wrong man to mess with. Justice P B Sawant made it clear on Monday that he does not want to send forth the wrong message, that the law can be applied differently to a Minister.

Sawant spoke to TNN after Monday's proceedings, when Jain refused to appear before the commission and stated that he was willing to bear the consequences of any legal action taken against him.

Sawant said that the minister's attitude seemed to indicate that
"Whatever the law, he is supreme". "If we don't take action now, it will send a wrong message that the law is different for a minister and different for the common man. We want to clarify that everybody is equal before the law," he remarked.

The commission had already accommodated Jain all through the election campaign, the election and several other occasions, said Sawant. "We expected him to co-operate, but it appears that his stance today was predetermined.

We know that if a minister is not present for the assembly session, the questions put to him can be deferred,"
he added. ...

# Social crusader Anna Hazare, when contacted, said that he would not like to comment on the development, since the commission proceedings and the inquiry was not over yet.

"However, the minister should not have acted in such a manner. The commission has almost finished its business, it was just a matter of one or two days," he said.

According to him, during the year-and-a-half that the commission has been conducting hearings, it has always considered everybody's problems and compulsions. It was now everybody's duty to co-operate with the commission, he said.

I remember an old and famous quote made by former Deputy PM Devi Lal. During a rally addressing farmers he said

"By constructing a dam to generate electricity, they are taking all the power in the water and only letting the resource-less water go by. That is why our crops don't flourish as much as it did earlier"

Quotes - 9 / 12 : Dev Anand says 'Yes, Prime Minister!'

Dev Anand says 'Yes, Prime Minister!'
INDIATIMES MOVIES

When stars of his age have either retired or faded into oblivion, Dev Anand is going strong – stronger with each passing day. Hit or flops no longer affect this recently-turned-81 year-old evergreen star. And the grand old man of Indian cinema is celebrating his birthday in a unique way - by announcing a new film called ‘Prime Minister’. In spite of his movies not doing well at the box office, he refuses to give up, and is as relentless as ever in his pursuit to make what he wants to. That’s Dev Anand for you. “No can ever stop me from chasing my dreams. I will continue to write and make movies as long as I live,’ says the legend.

In his own words....
Yes, ‘Prime Minister’!
Right now, I’m concentrating on my next film, titled ‘Prime Minister’. It is a spoof on the present political system of India and I’m planning to have only one song in it. Being an avid reader, I keep track of everything – politics, too. The idea for the film struck me during the recent Lok Sabha elections.

I play the Prime Minister!
In my films, who else will play the lead role besides me? I have been playing the central role in all my films ever since 1947, because my fans want me to see me in lead. Besides me, Boman Irani, and Tara Sharma are playing important roles in the movie. I have shot more than half of it in actual locations in Gujarat. That plays a important part in my film, because the story takes place in an earthquake-ridden area in a small town in Gujarat.
What’s special about the film is....
What makes it different is I have taken a realistic approach this time - there's only one song and one dance in the entire movie. It’s a film of two hours and five minutes, to be precise.

My other film, ‘Beauty Queen’ is on hold!
Though I started ‘Beauty Queen’ before ‘Prime Minister’, I found the latter more topical and I got charged up. I don’t plan anything in life; I decide everything on the spur of the moment. So, for the time being, I have I decided to keep ‘Beauty Queen’ on hold, but I will start shooting for the film as soon as I finish ‘Prime Minister’.
Image
We heard that after completing his film, Dev Anand will be heading for Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA, where his NRI fans are planning to celebrate his 81st birthday at the Trump Taj Mahal and Casino. The NRI fan clubs are planning a nostalgic event, which will include current, modern and contemporary performances from other stars, and is likely to be attended by various Bollywood biggies. For the legend, the celebration begins at 81. And there’s more to come...

"..Take not life, which Allah hath made sacred, except by way of justice and law: thus does He command you, that ye may learn wisdom." (al-An'am 6:151

Doubt is a pain too lonely to know that faith is his twin brother

If I accept the sunshine and warmth I must also accept the thunder and lightning

A man can be free without being great, but no man can be great without being free[/b]
