A question of cricitics (Cricket & Politics)

by Debatemonger HP » Wed Jan 04, 2006 7:26 pm

I've been missing interesting discussions for quite some time now. And this is something that has been going on in my mind for quite some time. Want to know your views on this issue.

Recently, the ICC has taken a stand on the cricket telecast issue in India and has passed some official statements through its president, Ehsaan Mani. What are your views on this issue? Here are some angles to think on before posting.

1. Is the Supreme court ruling on the telecasts monopolistic in nature as claimed by the private sports networks?

2. Should the ICC have any say over such matters?

3. What does this ruling have in store for the Indian consumer in the light of new technologies like DTH and aggresive FDI regimes in the television sector?

i think the govt's decision to force telecasters to share feed with DD is very unfair for the private channels. TV telecast rights are one of the highest sources of income for cricket boards, esp if teams from India and Pakistan are involved.

the telecasters pay billions for the rights and then recover the investment via TV ads. in this scenario, if DD has to get automatic telecast rights, then the profits of the other channels who had bid successfully wud go for a toss. TV viewership in the subcontinent is the highest and is a goldmine for TV channels. DD's dictatorial monopoly is very unfair and removes any semblance of a level playing field.

DD is behaving like a local goonda, extorting telecast feeds of matches...

the private channels are in the business of making money and the cricket boards of various countries make money by selling rights to the telecasters.

how do u think the BCCI became super-rich? by selling telecast rights of all tournaments to private channels ever since Jaggu-dada took over in the early 90s.

the West Indies cricket board is already complaining to ICC that DD's move wud hurt their earnings during the next world cup as no telecaster wud be willing to pay a good fee and end up losing revenue in India.

why shud they be denied a chance to earn good $$$s from the world cup? and what right does DD have to telecast the matches without paying anything to the Windies cricket board?
