Depends on your karma actually. One of my friends does that every two weeks, and his comp is still alive and well. Another did it just about twice in one year and his hard disk crashed. 8)

If you are formatting the whole hard disk, you may be shortening its life each time you format.

If you format just a partition (the Windows or Linux partition) it doesn't have much effect on the life of the whole hard disk. In fact it will improve data access time and the overall efficiency of the hard disk.

If you do a lot of installing/uninstalling, formatting once in 6 months is better for your hard disk life and efficiency than not reformatting at all.

Crap! You can Quickformat it any number of times you want.

Low Level Formats are differet, since they reset each sector/whatever; low-level formats have this habit of 'creating' bad sectors on your hard disks if you are in a habit of doing LL formats frequently (as in every month).

At our cafe, we have been quick formatting Hard Disks every week since an year, and so far have only lost two) depends upon your Karama, as Lucifer says). Same goes with bad sectors, lost paritions, viruses, browser hijacks. etc.

Take san's advice, and just reinstall Windows if you have to. Btw, that eyeroll was for browser hijacks.

You probably wouldn't have lost those two if you had formatted them less frequently.

I think Scandisk in XP has been renamed to Chkdsk again. Its old name was Chkdsk. You can try it with that.

I never used System Restore on XP. I guess it take you to a state at some checkpoint in the past. Does it work well? Debian performs a similar system check once in 30 bootups.

It Works but not all Files are restored Properly & Implicitly. But It helps a Lot when Any Installation turns out to be Corrupt and One is Unable to Un-Install it.

It also is useful for Undoing Changes in Some Games I play :o

It ain't a File.Its a Prog.

You need to Richt-Click on ur C (Or D) Drive and Check "Check the Disk For Errors" Under Tools. It will tell that It cannot be Done now and It will be Done at the Next Startup. You Tell Yes and Reboot and Let the ChkDisk Run for almost 15 minutes or so....
