Aussie Open Predictions

by Habitual Perfectionist » Thu Jan 20, 2005 11:24 pm

The first two rounds are over and we've got to see all top performers in action. How about your predictions on who will win the first biggie of the year?

My bets :

Men's Singles :

Winner - Federer no doubt. He's been unstoppable in recent times.

Other threats - _ & Agassi. The grand old man of men's tennis is out to show that he's no less ageless than Jimmy Connors. And _ has the best return of serve I've seen in the tournament.

Women's Singles : Its such an open field that its extremely difficult to pick a winner here. The probables? The Russkie pack (Sharapova, Dementieva, Myskina) and the Williams sisters. Top seed Davenport is looking quite rusty.

Men's singles : Roger Federer -jst superb!! never seen neone play so comfortably..

2nd choice is b/w Andy _ (..been v unlucky against Federer..)

n Lleyton Hewitt...pretty agressive..n home fav there.

Women's singles :  pretty confusin..

Lindsay Davenport doesnt seem at her best rt now.. so apart frm her could b neone between da William sisters.. or between the russian lot Maria sharapova..Anastasia Myskina.

Such dominance is good for the sport sometimes. Because it is only with this kind of dominance that exciting rivalries start. Look at Borg-McEnroe, then McEnroe-Connors, Becker-Edberg, Sampras-Agassi and now, _ (Although Roger is way ahead at the moment, _ is sure to catch up with him pretty soon. he's an excellent all-court player and his career's just started too). This year, _ has played as good as Federer, if not better. And people are expecting to see the two clash for the cup. And then there are Agassi and Hewitt (However much I might hate the guy, just can't stop admiring his dedication) to make it a gripping tourney on the men's side.

Compare this with the women's draw. The belgians aren't around. The russkies haven't made that strong an impression yet. The Williams sisters are on their wane. And Davenport is not at her 100%. You might as well hodl a lucky draw to pick the winner. And what's the interest level in the women's side this year? Right from the commentators to the uninitiated fan, the men's draw is whats holding all interest.

Yup all these rivalries is wht makes the game all the more interesting..

One of the best waz b/w Sampras n Agassi ( the others were b4 ma time).

The current rivalz as it turns out to b r Federer n _.. but then as _ had said in an interview.. tht 2 be termed as rivals I should also win something to keep the competition going on..

umm...CAD..am sure u know the answer 2 ur question ! :)

Will any thread be left without spamming?

This is for predictions for winners of the tournament. So let's not bring Sania Mirza in here. There's another thread for her already. However optimistic we might be, we all know that she still has a long way to go before she can be counted as one in the big league.

This is not what I'd really call an exception. But Sania Mirza in a thread meant to discuss favourites for the title? That doesn't even qualify as a remote extension.

Well...in the absence of the belgians...and Capriati...I'm not even looking at the women's draw. Who wants boring Williams sisters when you can watch wonders like Federer and Agassi?

NEways....I'll see if I can check the website here and get back to you on your question.

Russians Knocked Out

Frenchwoman Nathalie Dechy and Swiss No.12 seed Patty Schnyder will

play for a semi-final berth at Australian Open 2005 after both upset higher-ranked Russian opponents in the fourth-round. Also through to the quarter-finals is 2000 champion Lindsay Davenport who awaits either Venus Williams or Alicia Molik.
