I'd say Lata Mangeshkar. She's got an amazing voice...even at that ripe age, her voice is as good as how it was 25 years ago.

Atleast for me, best female vocalist is the one who can spell-bind the audience for decades, without skin-tights and silicon breasts.

its a blessing that she's stopped singing for young heroines......i still havent recovered from madhuri's voice souding like an old hag in DTPH, HAHK etc.....

I'd call Lata a very good singer but not great. She has been around for a long time, but there was a lot of behind the scenes work too that led to it. Remember singers like Vani Jayaram, Suman Kalyanpur etc.? They were just sidelined because Lata armtwisted a lot of music directors into not making them sing. I'd rate Vani Jayaram's Bole re papihara and Kalyanpur's Ye mausam rangeen sama atleast equal if not better than any of Lata's songs. Shows that they had talent.

It was only the peerless OP Nayyar who had the guts to reject Lata's tactics and give her a taste of her own medicine. He vowed never to make Lata sing for him and he did that.

I still consider Geeta Dutt better than Lata in terms of depth of voice and emotion and Asha Bhonsle better than her in terms of versatility. I'd put Lata at 50% talent, 25% machinations and 25% hype.

I'll vote on this post later.

Celine Dion - Her songs dont appeal to me. She has a voice alright but a good voice I dont know.

Whitney Houston - She has a good voice but no control over her renditions. She has sung some good songs though.

Mariah Carey - She shouts more than she sings.

Christina Aguilera - She has a good voice.

Shania Twain - I like her songs.. she is good pop singer.

Ella Fitzgerald - Awesome singer. One of my Favs :D

Tina Turner - I like her songs in some weird way.

Cher - She cant sing for nuts. She is more of a show woman than anything.

Madonna - Can she sing ?

People you are forgetting

-- Norah Jones

-- Sheryl Crowe

-- Dianna Ross

Was talking to a music director. He mentioned that even if a person was besura/besuri, courtesy computers, they can be made to sound in tune.

Of course this probably doesn't apply to ppl with no sense of rhythm/music, but what he said took me by surprise.

Asha Bhonsle? In fact I think her age comes through in her voice. Lata Mangeskar's voice has that quality they call 'mithaas'. But yeah singing for 20 somethings NOW doesn't really gel.

Alka Yagnik is all over the place, from a Bollywood perspective. When u compare Kavita Krishnamoorthy's voice with Alka Yagnik's the former's carnitic background is obvious. Sunidhi Chauhan has a husky voice. Oh that reminds me, Phalguni Pathak(is that her surname?) has an extremely feminine sounding voice, in sharp contrast to the way she dresses. Anyone heard of lesser known ones like Sadhna Sargam, a young thing (I forget her name) who sang 'Dola-re-Dola' (Devdas) ?

Don't know much about the western scene, but anyways my 2 pence. Shania Twain's nice. Natalie I's 'Torn' is the only no. I've heard. Dion became a household name post Titanic. Love 'Thats the way it is'.

Maraiah Carey's 'Hero' is good stuff. Heck! I'm talking about fave songs now!

Closer home, singers like Usha Uthup/Shubha Mudgal/Nazia Hassan/Runa Laila have made their mark though they are not the conventional sort.

both the budhdhies shud stop singing for young heroines...:x...tho Asha's voice still has some trace of sexiness in it...

Shreya Ghoshal....seems to be the best these days...

Amazing, these kids. After seeing these shows. it is shcoking that we have not had another Kishore or Rafi all these years, with all this talent just floating around.

She is not that popular, no??

asli_badmash wrote:Madonna - Can she sing?

She can! People give more attention to her vidoes and lifestyle. But she has been around from the time when music videos were not so hot. Please dont confuse her with Brtiney, etc.

Have to agree with you. I think women singers have started concentrating more on the videos. Which is why people lap up Norah Jones' 'I dont want to be a Diva' speeches so eagerly.

Sharjeel....a Kishore or a Rafi happen once in a lifetime. They are legends and we will never get another Kishore or another Rafi.

Has anyone heard Aake seedhi lagi from Half Ticket? Or Madhuban mein radhika from Kohinoor? I don't think anyone in the currect crop can do justice to these numbers.

Rite. Agree that those two (and some others) might never come around. But there should be some who are fantafabulous singers.

Sonu Nigam and Adnan Sami come close. So do Alka Yagnik and Sunidhi Chauhan (too soon to say for Sunidhi). But apart from Sonu (and maybe Adnan), all have flattered to deceive.

Maybe it is the way songs are made nowadays...

While comparing today's crop and old timers, we have to take into account a lot of parameters that have changed over time.

As someone pointed out before in this thread, software can make even my landlord sound like Hemant Kumar. The use of computers etc. has a big impact on today's music.

We should also take into account the dedication of the artistes then and now. We had a Pancham who would sail in the hooghly every night for a complete month....just to compose the background rhythm for Chingaari koi bhadke. I doubt if someone would do the same today.

The filmmakers of yesteryears also had a much better insight into music. You don't get the likes of Raj Khosla, Guru Dutt, K.Asif and although I hate the man, no doubts about his choice of music, Raj Kapoor. Todays' filmmakers, maybe with the exception of Subhash Ghai and Yash Chopra, don't pay much attention to music and thus, it gets ignored on the whole.
