let's see, I am fairly tall(6'4"), so ample space is a concern...looking for a nice car/van...budget is pretty flexible for the right car.. Don't know about distance part...but i guess I would use it heavyly when I am there...3 weeks at a time.

Thanks for the education!

Ample space...Flexible budget...car/van...heavy usage...sounds like the perfect case for a UV or an SUV, if u ask me!

In ascending order of price:

Qualis (UV) - Good value for money, reliable, Toyota quality, bland looks.

abt 5.5 to 7 lakhs

Scorpio (SUV) - Good value for money, rugged, comfortable, Low-cost SUV, 4 wheel drive option, good looks (except back side). abt 5.5 to 7 lakhs

Safari (SUV) - Great buy, macho looks, Very comfortable, some luxury at relatively cheap price, 4 wheel drive option. abt 8 to 10 lakhs.

Other more expensive SUVs (16 Lakhs+) are Hyundai Terracan, Suzuki Vitara, Honda CRV, Chevrolet Forrester, Pajero, Land Cruiser, Merc M-Class......

all of them seat abt 7 to 8 people max and have loads of space.

CtlAltDel: Thanks for the input...indeed the Safari seems like the ideal kind of vehicle. How's the reliability of these beasts and what kind of mileage do these give? Also, how's traffic and driving these days? Last time I was there(2000), traffic was a bitch, especially with the flyover construction! Is it better now or still suicidal for a visitor to bother driving?

If you know of a link or website(s) for these vehicles that you can share?

I am sure u've made a gr8 choice. The new Safaris are great vehicles, perfect for Indian conditions. They are among the TATA vehicles being exported to UK and Europe (along with Tata Indica cars).

If i appear to plug strongly for TATA, its coz I own a TATA Indica and i am extremely happy with its performance and maintanence costs.

I think Safaris would give around 10-11 kmpl with A/C in city conditions. They run on diesel so costs are low. There's also a powerful petrol version but thats only if u want speed and dont care abt fuel consumption (abt 5-6 kmpl).

Reliability is also good these days in TATA cars, as domestic sales and export contracts prove. I also know a few people who are proud owners of safaris.

the flyovers are done, but its still the same bitch, joined by her children and relatives  ...all the more reason why u need an SUV! I wont advice a new comer to drive in the city, but since u r an ex-hydbadi, i am sure u can manage. if in doubt, u may go for a driver!
