Personal hits flop at BO

by HelloGuru » Fri May 09, 2003 7:48 pm

I always wondered why some very excellent to good movies have beaten the dust at BO. Though I think it doesn\'t really matter as a normal viewer whether a movie makes money or not, or for that matter whatever BO records it reaches to. But still if a good well made movie which touches your heart is not popular with public then you tend to feel like : Is something wrong with me man? Am I different from others?

These are some of the movies which I felt the same way... It would be great if you all can contribute yours...

Jaithra Yatra: I think this one was a well made crisp movie. Star cast was great, good music, crisp direction and it was following the then current trend too. Everything was above average about this movie but still no one appreciated it, lot of the other movies at that time which were horrible compared to this, but still were hits at BO. The only reason for the failure that comes to my mind is: the shadow of Shiva\'s success.

Rudra Veena: This was a classic case of failure for the reasons of star image. If a movie can be a super hit at BO for a star, it can also be a flop for the same reason. Chiranjeevi was great in this movie, Illayaraja at his best, balachander with his usual... but still it has gone with the wind. No offences but sometimes I feel like some other lesser STAR would have made this movie a bigger hit at BO. May be Rajendra Prasad... Any guesses?

Govinda Govinda: A film by RGV... Great technician and a story teller of his time. Lots of reasons have been debated at that time for the failure of this movie but no matter what, I felt it was a great romantic thriller. Great music... cute Sridevi... dashing Nag... what else do you need for a hit?

Raathri: Till date I feel this movie was ahead of its time. Creating fear out of nothing was a great effort. Excellent technical department, amazing performances, and, of course, mind blowing execution by RGV. I think we treated him harsh during his stint at Tollywood... he was a trend setter and whenever he came up with something new we tried to dissect him apart. Actually it was a boon in disguise for him; he went on for a far bigger ground. Anyway, this movie is still one of my favorite ones.

Sankalpam: This one was a good attempt to show struggle of a young entrepreneur. Added with good masala that should have been appealed to one and all and should have been at least above average at BO. But unfortunately it was not the case. I think Prakash Raj had his first sizeable role in this movie and came up with a good performance.

I have still more... I\'ll try to add them in the next posting. Meanwhile I would love to see from u all too...
