The best book ever written???

The Hobbit!<br><br>
\"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort.\"
<br><br>I\'m probably in the minority with this opinion... but I think \"The Hobbit\", written by J R R Tolkien, is more entertaining and enjoyable than \"Lord of the Rings\". \"The Hobbit\" is more innocent, less filled with religious overtones... simply more fun.

Methinks the question is hard-put to be answered. However, I do think Rushdie\'s \'Midnight\'s Children\', Wilbur Smith\'s \'River God\', James Michener\'s \'Chesapeake\' and Asimov\'s \'The God\'s Themselves\' were bloody brilliant!

boy, what a response...sorry, never read \"midnight children\"...but my opinion is \"A Brief History of Time\" by Hawking. When the publishers told Hawking that every equation in the book halves the buyers, Hawking finished the book with just on equation ( e= mc2 ) and remarks \"hope that doesn\'t scare away half of my potential readers\".

Hmm. I guess I didn\'t think of non-fiction being a part of this. If we\'re looking at non-fiction, then my fav\'s \'The Rise and Fall of the Third Chimpanzee\' by Jared Diamond. It explains human behaviour based on genetics, evolution and history, and it\'s incredible! Completely trashes a lot of accepted behavioural theory. Provides a lot of insights into things like infidelity and smoking :)
