Who is your favorite detective in fiction?

by kishore » Sat Mar 08, 2003 2:10 pm

hey guys, everyone has a detective hero whose qualities one would like to possess. I personally like three detectives who i believe are among the top of fiction\'s illustrious creations.

1. sherlock holmes (creator: arthur conan doyle)
2. inspector morse (creator: colin dexter)
3. hercule poirot (creator: agatha christie)

...though not necessarily in the above order. but, for their sheer brilliance, the first 2 compete for the first 2 places. can u please stop by and give ur favourite detective heroes?

Sherlock Holmes is my all time favourite! I\'m extremely fond of his character and during my school days, DD used to air the televised series every sunday ...never missed a single one! And ofcourse, I have read all his stories at least a dozen times !!

My favourite detective is Edgar Allan Poe\'s \"C. Auguste Dupin\" a French(?). You\'ve to read \"The Murders in the Rue Morgue\" to comprehend his real reasoning prowess. You will instantly admit Holmes and others stand behind Dupin, when you read his two more classics \"THE MYSTERY OF MARIE ROGET\" and \"The Purloined Letter\".

Incidentally I believe none of Poe\'s other stories featured Dupin again!

Old board, new post. My favourite, if not as brilliant or eccentric as Holmes or Dupin ('The Murders in the Rue Morgue' was definitely brilliant) is Asimov's team of Elijah Bailey and R. Daneel Olivaw (and, later, Daneel and R. Giskard Reventlov) I mean, who on Earth (or elsewhere, for that matter) could have thought of the concept of robot detectives who have to do all their detecting and deducing within the framework of the Three Laws of Robotics?? Brilliance at it's height!

Sherlock Holmes is I believe definitely the best for the following reasons:

1) His acurate instincts and logical reasoning.

2) The ease with which he solves cases.

3) And the speed with which he clears cases.

4) And ofcourse a faithful and an educated assistant.

None other has all the above qualites combined together.

And how can u guys forget 'Byomkesh Bakshi'?

I think the best detective changes along with the author and the kind of plot. That being said i feel the best detective in science fiction is Elijah Bailey in I, Robot and the speaker of the second foundation in the Foundation series (sorry...dont remember the name). I'd have to say that the credit for the best detective work ever written goes to Isaac Asimov in The Robot and the Foundation series for the way he articulates science fiction with detective work and manages to make both sound futuristic and concievable. Hercule Poirot and Perry Mason are also good and it is interesting to note the contradictions between the two.

Ahhh, another sci-fi buff. Was wondering if I was the last remnant of an endangered species. But, dude, Elijah Bailey wasn't in 'I' Robot' as far as I can recall. He was only in the 'Caves of Steel' series. And I think of the speaker of the Second Foundation as more of a psychologist than a detective. That said, it was INCREDIBLE, the way he took out the Mule in 'Second Foundation'.

Where art thou, all ye fans of Asimov??

Happy to know people are still interested Asimov. I havent read Caves of Steel but Elijah Bailey sets out to investigate the murder of Jander Pannell, the second humaniform robot after Daneel Olivaw on Aurora in I, Robot.

I think i got it wrong. Bailey and Daneel pair up to investigate Jander's death in 'The Robots of Dawn' not I, Robot. BTW who do you guys think are the best science fiction authors ever.

Adam Dalgliesh

by nanzone » Thu May 06, 2004 1:30 pm

Adam Dalgliesh, the poet cop in most of P D James books. The author is my fav in detective fiction.

How come nobody has voted for Miss Marple?

Asimov has written/edited a few collections of short detective stories as well, which are quite good.

How come there's no mention of Perry Mason here? There were days in school when I bunked classes just to finish off the latest Perry Mason mystery I was hooked to.

Byomkesh Bakshi rocked bigtime. There are so many similarities between the styles of Byomkesh and Sherlock Holmes.

I never liked Agatha Christie (too boring) and so, Poirot & Miss Marple are out of the list.

Inspector Morse, The Old Fox, Karamchand all deserve a special mention.

But my favourite...dunno how many have read him...would always remain Inspector John Appleby (Created by Michael Innes). Death at the President's Lodging by Innes is probably the best ever work of detective fiction ever written, but sadly unsung and unheralded.
