Lehmann: Lankans are Black *#@*&%!
London, Jan. 16: Australian cricketer Darren Lehmann faces being ruled out of the start of the World Cup next month after becoming the first player to be charged by the sport’s governing body of racially abusing an opponent.
The International Cricket Council announced on Thursday that Lehmann had been charged with breaching the organisation’s code of conduct following an incident during Wednesday’s one-day international against Sri Lanka in Brisbane.
Lehmann will appear before an ICC hearing chaired by match referee Clive Lloyd in Adelaide on Saturday, an ICC spokesman said.
Lehmann admitted he referred to Sri Lankan players as “black” in a two-word obscenity shouted in the corridor separating the teams’ dressing rooms after he was run out for 38 in Wednesday’s game in Brisbane and has apologised both verbally and in writing to the Sri Lankan players. “I do apologise to them — it was in the heat of the moment and out of frustration,” he said.
But the ICC charges mean he could still be banned for up to four Test matches or a maximum of eight one-day internationals under tough new penalties introduced last year.
Australia has, at the most, five matches left in the current Tri-Nations series in Australia, so an eight game, one-day match ban would bar him from at least the first three matches in the World Cup which starts on February 8.
After the incident on Wednesday, Sri Lanka complained to former West Indies captain Lloyd, who summoned Lehmann to a post-match meeting.
Following Lehmann’s apologies, the Sri Lankans were prepared to let the matter rest but the London-based ICC decided the incident was too serious to be dropped.
The ICC’s Australian chief executive Malcolm Speed, said he personally, rather than the match referee, was bringing charges against Lehmann.
“As a result of an overnight investigation and on the basis of reports received from Australia I have decided to charge Darren Lehmann with a breach of Level 3.4 of the ICC code of conduct,” Speed said.
