The Linux scene in Hyderabad

by Vamsee » Fri Aug 02, 2002 8:48 pm

For a city which boast of being the I.T power, there\'s practically no linux presence in hyd. Why is this? Why are so taken up with Microsoft? Why can\'t we try to be more geekier?

looks like u never used linux dude, Linux is simply great !!
Especially for the kind of stuff that I work on -- Semiconductor Design -- If design tools are supported on Linux platforms they speed up the processes by 2X to 5X --
And more companies are supporting Linux. It wont be long before people will have to know some linux if they have to survive in the Hi-tech industry.

Most of the companies depend on Microsoft products becoz they are pretty cheap compared to other opearting systems or other software. Our Hyderabadis have not reached the level of Linux and its going to take another 3-5 yrs for linux to become popular and mostly used one. Even in the developed countries not many use Linux and its still in the being tested by big companies like Oracle , IBM etc.

haha...don jump into conclusions...looks like u have been doing only semi-conductor design all ur life long....u said one example of linux`s superiority over windows... just lie down and think for 5 minutes u`ll find thousands of instances where windows is superior than linux.... and coming to the point abt me....ive been a sys-ad for both windows and linux machines....and i very much know the intricacies involved in both.....for a common man...windows is always better.....some ppl say linux is very fast ....dude run anything in non-graphical mode..its always faster.

Hey hey hey, whats going on here? Did I hear anyone say that Linux sucks? Maybe you have not even seen a computer that has Linux on it. Try Mandrake if you have time, in my opinion, installation of Mandrake Linux is easier than installing Windows. But you need to read a lot on dual-boot first, or else you\'ll have to reinstall your Windows again.

And for the guy who said that anything that has a non-graphical interface is faster, well, try Mandrake Linux with KDE 2 or 3, and you\'ll know what speed is. It just blazes away. Browsing is much faster using the Konqueror browser on Linux, and of course I don\'t want to say anything about development stuff.

But I wish to add that Linux is not for those who don\'t want to risk and try it out. And for the casual computer user who is NOT into programming, I would recommend any version above Windows 98, except Windows ME.

And this is for those who think that \"Linux users are cool and Windows users are passe\", you sure have an attitude problem. People use different operating systems for different purposes. Most users would be more comfortable with Windows because they don\'t have to meddle with the dozens of files you find in Linux. Would you tell your parents to install Linux just because it would make them \"feel cool\"? What if there is a problem somewhere? Do you want them to refer to the Linux manuals and edit the necessary files? Using an operating system is a matter of choice and you don\'t need to \"upgrade\" from Windows to Linux, because this word \"upgrade\" does not make sense for the casual user. As a developer, I would prefer Linux for most of my work, because it is more comfortable in Linux than it is in Windows. However as I said, its a matter of opinion, and everyone is free to use whatever OS he/she wants to use.

Windoze Dude, Bhir Ustad did NOT say that he was working ONLY on semi-conductor design, he said ESPECIALLY on semi-conductor design... read his posting fully before you add your comment. Well, it sure is pathetic that working as a sysad, that too in the Windows and Linux environment, you have not been able to find out the fine differences between Linux and Windoze. Seriously, just anybody can be a sysad in a Windows networking environment. But it takes a lot of exploration and tinkering around to be an admin for a Linux network.

Ravi, Windows is definitely not cheaper than Linux because Linux is \"free-source\". As in, anyone can download the source and setup Linux on their machines. However, make sure you have a backup hard drive. Or else, you\'re gonna have to install windows applications again. Linux is for those who are well versed with computer environments. Any one can operate a windows machine. however, the same cannot be applied to Linux. it requires an understanding of the OS. C developers prefer Linux because it\'s much faster. However, with .NET making giant strides into the industry, i believe Linux is not going to be able to withstand the pressure except for in classrooms.

Well guys, I\'m truly surprised - and honored to have people taken up my line of discussion so enthusiastically. I like you guys to keep up this spirit. By the way, as far as I know, Hyderabad\'s LUG( for the newbies, it means Linux Users Group) is brain dead. Anybody wants to breathe some life into it? You can mail me about this on vamixus@yahoo.com. I\'ll be happy to take part. No spam please!
