here's some Varma-speak from the ToI website:

RGV wrote:Shah Rukh Khan comes with a package, the best musicians, the best clothes, the perfect look - he is really smart to get all that just right”.
"If all these things are not correct, I don't think people will like Shah Rukh as much. So I avoid stars, who cost a huge amount of money, and pool all my resources in the idea.”
RGV wrote:What is a hit or a flop? I don't think of hits and flops in terms of popularity. I think of it in terms of money. As long as my money is coming back, it's a hit for me The rest is just the opinion of critics.
RGV wrote:They (his films) were just perceived as flops because the critics didn't like them. Gayab , for instance, did better business than Ab Tak Chappan but critics liked Ab Tak Chappan , so it is perceived as a hit
RGV wrote:I have no pretenses of intellectuality. I treat the film as a product, it's like if I was selling shirts - you give lots of choice to the buyer, in my case the audience, and let them pick and choose
RGV wrote:I don't know anything about the techniques of filmmaking. I don't know the details of camera, lenses, all that. All I know is the idea. For me, the idea is everything.
That's why I'm also able to give a chance to so many new directors. People tell me - how can you let them make a film, they don't know anything. I tell them, so what, nor did I. In fact, I still don't.

thats RGV, my hero! :D hope other directors learn form him!

Over-rated I should say.His newer movies like Yaadein,Taal,Pardes were'nt a patch on his earlier ventures like Ram-Lakhan,Saudagar,Hero,Vidhaata,Karz etc

And for no earthly reason whatever his name comes to mind whenevr I hear abt Trimurti and go Yuck....Yuck....

If you'd noticed, Yaadein was probably the only movie which lacked Ghai's stylish treatment (He was not the director of Trimurti). And yes...I agree that Yaadein, Taal, Pardes etc. were not a patch on his earlier productions, they were more because of weak screenplays rather than the director's lack of finesse.

And if we can have a Ram Gopal Varma in this thread, I see no reason not to have someone who made films like the ones you mentioned (Vidhata, Karz, Hero, Ram Lakhan) and also others like Kalicharan, Khalnayak, Karma & Meri Jung.

His movies have always been good entertainers (As I mentioned above, save for Yaadein, all his movies have been worth atleast one watch and most were worth many). And I believe he still has a few good films left in him.

Yes I agree that those duds of his had something to do with the story part as well.Personally i think he got carried away by exuberance when he casted Hrithik n Kareena in Yaadein hoping to get the Youth all in a tizzy but since the film mainly concentrated on Jackie,it failed miserably.

Trimurti was'nt directed by Ghai but since Mukul Anand's No more,Ghai comes to mind whenevr i think of that inanity.

I also did'nt like any of his post-saudagar films.Khalnayak was too violent n crass while pardes was all mushy mushy. And his past movies were masterpieces.Of all of them I haven't seen only Kaalicharan.Karz is one all-time fav & credit should go to Ghai for attempting a Punarjanam story back then. And to think all Bollywood was heaping accolades on Rakesh roshan after Karan Arjun.

I also like Ghai's inimitable appearance he puts in in all of his movies.

Always in a song If i'm not wrong. But in Taal he crept up not in the midst of a song i believe. And can u plz remind me where did he pop up in pardes.I can't recollect.....

IMO, only his earlier films are still worth watching. Karz i my fave, followed by Karma, Kalicharan, Vishwanath and Hero.

Ram Lakhan was ok but dragged a lot. Saudagar was watchable coz of Dilip Kumar n Raaj Kumar, but dragged a lot too. Khalnayak was overrated and ran only coz of the "Choli ke peeche" number. Taal was not bad, but cud have been better. Pardes was a wannabe "DDLJ". I am glad i have not seen Yaadein.

lets see how Kisna turns out...

YCR, i think in Pardes Ghai appears briefly in the song "Yeh Mera India"

All I recall is the TAsveer n Yeh Dil song.....

I Remember that one one TV show Sajid Khan relegated the Yeh Dil song to a Potty song

While Still on Subhash ghai....His "Kisna" is Opening tomorrow.

Ghai handles the director's seat after a hiatus of three years with Kisna.

Though the filmmaker has been operating as a prolific producer all this

while (Aitraaz, Joggers Park, Ek Aur Ek Gyarah), his last directorial

venture was way back in 2001 (Yaadein). Moreover this is the first time

that Ghai attempts a period film. The story moves across the vast North

Indian plains highlighting the different cultures and colors that make

India unique. Ace cameraman Ashok Mehta has captured the spectacular

settings and locations, from the Himalayan Mountains to the spiritual town

of Haridwar with remarkable élan.

With Kisna, Ghai continues his fascination of introducing new talents into Bollywood

(Jackie Shroff, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Manisha Koirala and Mahima Chaudhary were Introduced By Ghai).

In Kisna he introduces the immaculate Indian beauty - Isha Shravani

and gives the first big break to the foreign actress - Antonio Bernath.

The film boasts of a rich musical score by maestros A.R. Rahman and

Ismail Darbar.

The classic composition is already a craze throughout the nation and even

further. A.R.Rehman has also recorded a special English number for the

international version. Add to it an item number in the form of a qawalli

by the gorgeous Sushmita Sen! Now this is an audiovisual treat.

Last but not the least, Kisna would be the last big release of late

Mr. Amrish Puri. Puri shared a great rapport with Subhash Ghai and

Featured in almost all his films. Even in Kisna, the legendary artist has

an interesting role.

So book you tickets for this cinematic treat well in advance. Kisna essentially is a film for the big screen.
