Aww.. I did not like "Timeline" a bit. Not even a teeny weeny bit. Same about "Prey". (Lots of pseudoscience in!) . I absolutely adored Congo and Adromeda strain.

About favorite quotes

>>

"Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn! "

>>

"Damn you Scarlett"

Rhett Butler, Gone With The Wind and Scarlett

>>

"Sorry to interrupt the festivities, but we have a problem"

Hal, 2001 a space odessey.

>>

""First of all," he said, "if you can learn a simple trick, Scout,

you'll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never

really understand a person until you consider things from his point of

view-"

"Sir?"

"-until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." "

Atticus Finch and Scout in To Kill a Mocking Bird

>>

"I need no warrant for being, and no word of sanction upon my being. I am the warrant and the sanction."

Anthem (Ayn Rand)

And so many more.

I do not how it goes for everybody, but internet has defenitely boosted my reading habits and frequency several folds. I get to know a lottt more about books, I download lots, I read recommendation and reviews, discuss books, buy them.. Ahh luxuries of life..

Prey was lil bit too forgettable for me. Anyway am done with the thriller genre. About timeline, the science behind it was too contrived for it to be believable. :)

Read Asimov? or Arthur C Clarke? Or Leguin?

Asimov is my fav Scifi author

its a sci-fi for gods sake...it need not be believeable. the concept behind it is the hot topic these days tho...

seen the Jet Li film "ONE"...the same concept in that too...

Sci fi means need not be believable eh?

Wish Crichton had concentrated a little more on making the characters jump to and fro across time more plausible. About the concepts behind it, Quantum theory stuff after its mention in the preface just doesnt feature anywhere else in the novel.

"One" is on similar lines eh? Hmmm interesting..

how would crichton make it more plausible when its an Impossibility? travelling through time is impossible - howmuchever science advances in leaps and bounds.

"More plausible " is not equal " Possible". He need not have made it look possible. But he could have done a better job at it!!

It is his job as a thriller writer to do justice to his writing. Anyway it was just a personal opinion, forget it rainmaker.. :)

We have digressed far from the thread.

As an attempt to get back to it, my favourite author of the thriller genre is Grisham. Rainmaker was the first Grisham I read. It WAS a laborious read! I absolutely loved "Partner" and "Pelican Brief".

What is your ideal way to read a book? Mine is curling up in the bed, when it is raining outside. :)

not me tho. his novels are laborious as u said. the onely novel of his that left an impact on me was Time To Kill (again, the movie was not as good). Painted House put me off totally...

i like to read a book at any time...tho this DB is taking up a lot of time these days :D

i prefer thrillers, horror, comedy or some erotic novels too. my fave authors are Ludlum, Crichton, Follet, Archer, Sheldon, Clancy, Cook, Chase etc etc etc. i am not particular abt author. the summary at the back of the book should interest me...thats it...

i feel that its difficult to make an explanation sound convincing when its as far fetched as time travel! anyhow... :)

Grisham has been a mixed bag for me. Rainmaker was a Glorious read but Chamber was of yawn quality. Havent read Pelican and Partner yet.

Curling up in bed is the best way to read, but unfortunately the "when its raining outside" part is a distant possibility! it rains less than 4-5 times a year in this country :(

I like Sheldon & Archer. I've read almost every Sheldon out there. Archer wrote a novel "as the crow flies". its huugge and might be boring for many because it deals with old england etc.. but i felt the protagonists journey was interesting.

Agreed. Perhaps the last good Sheldon novel was Tell Me Your Dreams. The ones after that all suck, big time.

But, he did show some class in his earlier books. I can recall the lead characters of all his books upto Tell Me Your Dreams. Goes a lot to say about the fall in standard, doesn't it?

John Grisham is too cliche-ridden n predictable some times.. read a few of his novels, The Partner was damn good tho..

for me, the master of the thriller-genre has to be Robert Ludlum.. the plot-twists/characters are damn good..

Robert Ludlum is the man, along with Leon Uris and Irving Wallace. These guys are phenomenal. Love Harold Robbins too. He knows how to write - completely captures your attention.
