Currently reading JAcki Collins' Hollywood Wives. What a crap heap! That woman is totally overrated.

I read a Shobha De book. Don't remember what it is called. It is about four women who get together a few years after leaving school. They are all married and settled. It totally sucked. Was not even pornographic. I have no idea what she was trying to say.

i'm reading "A Brief History of India" by some french guy at the moment. only started, but i'm starting to dislike the Aryans already. dig those dravidians, they really rock. especially in Kerala, i like the idea of a matrarchary. i think its really weird that Krishna was a sort of dravidian hero (in that he was an advisor for the southern natives rather than the northern invaders) despite being embrased by hinduism as an avatar of a god (have i totally got the short end of the stick?)

Mark, first of all, that book is written by a French guy. No offence, but throughout history Westerners have defaced non-western history throughout the world. A case in point is the 1857 War of Independence. The British call it mutiny. Indian historians rightly call it the War of Independence. That one incident shook the very foundations of the British Empire. It just has to be more than a mutiny.

Secondly, Aryans were not invaders. There is a difference between an invader and a settler. Chengiz Khan was an invader because he came to India 14 times only to loot it and go back. The Aryans settled here and embraced Indian culture. During their time, art flourished in the country. Some of the best works in mathematics, science, philosophy, etc. have taken place during the Vedic Age.

Third, if you want to know about the real India, I suggest you read Pandit Nehru's A Discovery of India.

sorry Luci, don't know if you have done research on the guy (you may well have) but he lived in India for 20 years studying Sanskrit and interacting with the great modern Indian historians, also there is a hell of a lot of evidence that the ancient dravidian culture of india is responsible for most of the acient mediterian cultures that gave rise to european civilisation, and that the Aryans were technologically inferior to the much older dravidian races of India. This can be seen by the fact that there are a multitude of relics from before the Aryan settlement, but none after it for about 500 years. The Aryans when they arrived were illiterate, their culture and legends were passed along orally, they basically borrowed writting from the races that were already present in India when they arrived.

however, for me, much more reading is neccessary. I shall have a proper conversation about this when i learn more.

No, Mark. I have not done any research on the guy, and I know nothing about him. May be my judgement is clouded where westerners' writings about India are concerned because, frankly speaking, save for Mark Tully and Dominique Lapierre, they have not given me any reason to think otherwise.

well this guy thinks the sun shines out of India's ass, and who am i to disagree with him? I will definately have to expand my readings on your history and historic texts, however this was recommended to me by an Indian who has a love of his countries history. It assumes no familiarity with Vedic texts, Puranas, etc, so it seemed like a good introduction for a firang (i.e one written by another firang). Often people with a distance from your culture have the greatest insights to it.

Love James Hadley Chase. This guy and Erle Stanley Gardner might not have written classy stuff but every bookreader just has to read a few of their works. Their stuff is fast-paced, and usually the story wraps up in a couple of days.
