Cross Across - 30 / 5 / 05 : Across Lines of Laughter on the Wall Across Lines of Laughter on the Wall :

Cartoonists at Work
CARTOON, CARTOON, on the wall, can you predict the future of Bangalore for all?
THE LINE came to mind as we watched 13 City cartoonists at work on the "Bangalore Wall" at the local Max Mueller Bhavan (MMB) on April 13. Away from the desk-bound ink and pen that are their staple tools, away from the isolation that most professionals of their ilk work in, away from political satire by consensus, popular cartoonist N. Ponnappa and his peers in visual satire came up with cheerful, colourful perspectives on the former "village of boiled beans.''
The Bangalore Wall in weatherproof emulsion, a tribute to the late Maya Kamath, sorely missed by readers and fellow cartoonists alike, was sparked by an initiative from MMB director
Juliane Stegner, who says, "The idea, which came out of a discussion with Mr. Ponnappa, was to hold an event that was entirely different from MMB's cartoon workshops of the past. We wanted to bring the City's cartoonists together to work, to create a platform for the art.'' She adds with a laugh: "To Germans, thinking about a wall is very easy.''
Ponnappa, who coordinated the creative group effort, says, "Ms. Stegner offered me the wall and asked: Would you like to paint on it? I replied: I'd love to, but may I bring my friends along.'' Many of his friends have blossomed from a cartoon workshop he held at the Alliance Francaise in 1997, which spawned a young breed unafraid to be themselves Raghava K. K., Samita Rathor, Balaraj K. N., and Rasheed Kappan among them.
Their collaboration, a far cry from the political symbolism of the Berlin Wall, is a celebration of social Bangalore. It cartoons local norms and fads, traditions, and futuristic trends, with panache and plurality. How do individualistic minds approach it? In Raghava's panel, allocated by drawing lots, boards proclaiming "New brandy-laced coffee'' and "New coffee-flavoured beer'' jostle with Caf and Pub signs, as a sari-clad Maami clutching a bunch of fresh greens negotiates her way past a cycle-borne vendor of coffee. His scene is everyday lore rendered for all time, with a chuckle.

Indian Boy Wins Spelling Championship : 3 June 2000
WASHINGTON, JUNE 3. Twelve-year old Indian boy, George Abraham Thampy, has won the national Spelling Bee contest, beating 248 contestants after he spelled ``demarche'' correctly.
This was George's third bid for the Championship at the 73rd Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee Contest on Friday.
The Maryland Heights (Missouri) seventh grader won $ 10,000 for standing first in the Spelling Bee just a week after he finished second, winning a $15,000 scholarship in a geography competition. Both competitions were held in the U.S. capital.
George lives with his parents in a St. Louis suburb. He tied for the fourth place in the 1998 spelling contest and finished third last year.

NRI Boy Crowned Spelling Champ : FRIDAY, JUNE 03, 2005
WAHINGTON: Indian American Anurag Kashyap, from Poway, California, has won the 78th Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee competition.
Anurag, 13, bagged the prize by spelling correctly the word "Appoggiatura" (which means short note placed before a longer one) . Interestingly, he had never used the musical word before he cracked it to land on top of the spelling world in Washington on Thursday.
Another Indian American, Samir Sudhir Patel, 11, from Texas, had to settle for a tie for second place. He was the youngest of all in the final excruciating rounds and lost the championship when he misspelled "roscian."
Anurag, who has competed in spelling bees since he was in the fourth grade, has also participated in state-level Mathcounts, Science Olympiad competitions and California Geographic Bee.
This was his second attempt at this competition after he tied for 47th place in the 2004 national finals.
A composed Anurag literally cruised through the toughest words. Apart from the word that clinched the title, he correctly spelt cabochon, Priscilla, oligopsony, sphygmomanometer, prosciutto, rideau, pompier, terete, tristachyous, schefflera, ornithorhynchous, agio, agnolotti, peccavi, ceraunograph, exsiccosis and hodiernal.
"But it was not so easy", he said while receiving his trophy. Lost for words, he could just say,"it is just amazing". His second time here prepared him well for the bee and he had resolved to "study harder and win it"
Anurag will take home $22,000 in cash, a $5,000 college scholarship, books and a $1,000 savings bond.

Cross Across - 9 / 6 / 05 : Turbulent Cross-Over

Turbulent Cross-Over
There is a period in everyone's life which no one can quite understand but has to be gone through. Tempers are frayed, loud - and sotto voce - words are exchanged, the sweet and congenial home atmosphere gives way to uncertain, and often depressing, and erratic moodiness. Old jokes and references which used to once raise so many laughs and instant appreciation are now met with pitying looks. The family as a unit is under seige. Gone are those lovely "together" outings. You come home from work to be greeted not with cries of welcome but with either an empty house or with the darlings in front of the TV or poring over books or with the phone cradled lovingly in the neck. As soon as you enter, the speaker's voice drops meaningfully to a whisper, thereby confirming your suspicions that whoever is calling is upto No Good. Friends - sweet, lovely creatures once - who used to call you Uncle and Auntie not so long ago still call you that, but now the tone and inflection have changed. There is patronage there and admiration has been replaced with a certain airiness.
And not only has behaviour changed. Appearance has changed beyond all recognition. Boys' voices change, hair sprouts all over the body, accompanied by other bodily changes. Girls start developing figures and menstruating and enter the sisterhood of women, while boys go through other rites de passage which ensure, for them at least, smooth transiting from childhood to adulthood.
Yes, I am talking about adolescence. ...
On the brighter side, honesty is met with honesty, consideration with concern and loving kindness with permanent respect. For this a greater emphasis on spirituality is required. We do so much for our children but we neglect this aspect which teaches them an inner strength and in the words of Swami Vivekananda, allows us to recognise our true nature which is immortal. We give our children the best we can afford in terms of opportunities and education and show them the darker sides of our personalities when we think we are being defied but we don't offer them a true value system. Adolescence is a relatively new problem in India, one of the aspects of westernisation of urban India. The ancients had the right slant on it when they declared - "At the sixteenth year, the son becomes a friend and should be treated as one."
A friend, who deserves love, respect and equality, not an adversary who must be somehow brought to heel.

The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation
*
Eats, Shoots & Leaves : The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation
We all know the basics of punctuation. Or do we? A look at most neighborhood signage tells a different story. Through sloppy usage and low standards on the internet, in email, and now text messages, we have made proper punctuation an endangered species. In Eats, Shoots & Leaves, former editor Lynne Truss dares to say, in her delightfully urbane, witty, and very English way, that it is time to look at our commas and semicolons and see them as the wonderful and necessary things they are. This is a book for people who love punctuation and get upset when it is mishandled. From the invention of the question mark in the time of Charlemagne to George Orwell shunning the semicolon, this lively history makes a powerful case for the preservation of a system of printing conventions that is much too subtle to be mucked about with.

Cross Across - 16 / 6 / 05 : A Few Cross Words
A Few Cross Words
Puzzle me this: How many Wheaton students can report that they've been published in both the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times since September?
Mike Doran can. The first-year student from Topsham, Maine, has been creating crossword puzzles for years. His work has been a staple in the Wheaton Wire this year, and now his work can be seen across the country.
"All puzzles have some basic similarities, which I learned by attempting to make them, and since I had some ideas for themes I thought would make enjoyable puzzles, I decided to give it a whirl on a small grid," Doran explains. "It was tough, but doable. The grids got better and the themes more developed. There's still a lot more that I can do with them."
Doran begins the creation of every crossword by developing a theme, "the most essential thing to any puzzle. When a theme hits you--be it in your sleep or after seeing a certain word on a road sign--you have to pounce on that." Next he turns to the grid and places his theme words, followed by the placement of the longest non-thematic entries. Eventually, the grid is filled.
"A good puzzle, one that I would try to send off for publishing, can take up to fifteen hours to make and clue," Doran adds.

Cross Across - 26 / 6 / 05 : Across Divisions
Across Divisions
Language is what unites us with the world, for it enables a particularly human mode of access to what is outside us. Language is also what divides us from the world, for it is always there between us and whatever may be outside us. Literature, always written in some language or the other, displays a similar ambiguity. Drawing upon the world outside the text (directly or indirectly), it seeks to unite the reader with that world in sympathy, understanding or criticism. But the world it unites the reader with is the world of the text, and hence it also divides the reader from the world that is outside the text.
If this is the general condition of literature, imagine a literature about a country or community in a language that is not spoken by most members of that country or community. Imagine, for example, Indian English fiction. Less than four per cent of the population of India is supposed to speak English, but such is the position of English and English speakers in India that any literature written in it tends to be thinly smeared across all of India. If we keep the fact that this linguistic divide very often also coincides with significant socio-economic gaps, we might be able to understand the most crucial division that - in its presence or absence - characterises Indian English fiction.
Do not misunderstand me. I am not dismissing Indian English fiction because it is written in a language brought from abroad or spoken by a tiny elite. All I am pointing at is the huge linguistic and socio-economic chasm that lies between those who read and write in English and many of those who do not or cannot. And the various ways in which Indian English fiction faces up to, obscures or seeks to bridge this chasm.
The most obvious division is the one of social spaces, and various Indian English writers have attempted to resolve it in different ways. Villages, for example, have not only been absent in Indian English fiction: they have sometimes been present in largely idealised versions. ...

Cross Across - 3 / 7 / 05 : MoF, Mines Ministry Cross Swords Over Nalco ...MoF, Mines Ministry Cross Swords Over Nalco ...
NEW DELHI, JUNE 3: A battle is brewing over disinvestment in National Aluminium Company (Nalco). The finance ministry and the ministry of mines have crossed swords with the former having written a letter favouring disinvestment of 20 per cent government stake in Nalco and Mines Minister Sis Ram Ola opposing such a move.
The finance ministry has asked the mines ministry to consider the proposal of divesting 20 per cent of the government’s 87 per cent stake in Nalco.
However, Ola on Friday said he was against the proposal as Nalco was performing well and there was need to add more strength to the company which made highest ever net profit of Rs 1222.43 crore in fiscal 2004-05.
Nalco CMD C.R. Pradhan also echoed similar views saying ‘‘given a choice we will not favour disinvestment. The company is performing very well and it should be allowed to grow on its own.’’
‘‘As far as further expansion is concerned, we can generate resources. It will not be a problem,’’ he added. ...
