CrHts - 9 / 12 : JOHANN PETURSSON, "The Icelandic Giant"

GIANTS FROM TIMES PAST

Image

* JOHANN PETURSSON, "The Icelandic Giant"

Johann Petursson was billed as "the Icelandic Giant" and claimed a height of 8' 8". Early in his career he dressed the part of the dandy in top hat, waistcoat and tails - but in later years he took to wearing the Viking costume pictured here.

Petursson was born in Dalvik, Iceland in 1913. He began exhibiting himself in Europe, and spent the duration of the second World War trapped in Copenhagen, Denmark. In 1948, Petursson emigrated to America, where he initially appeared with Ringling Brothers. In 1950, Johann appeared in a campy B-movie called Prehistoric Women. At some point during the 1960's Petursson retired to Gibsonton, Florida, but showman (and neighbor) Ward Hall was able to coax him to work for him one last time in 1973 for a Smithsonian event in Washington, D.C. Petursson passed away in 1984 - having achieved quite a respectable age for a giant.

He was featured in films and magazines, and appeared with every major circus and carnival until he retired. This photo came from his widow after his death about ten years ago. He passed away in 1984.

Cross Across - 30 / 12 : Mega Tsunami : Future Shock!

by HH » Thu Dec 30, 2004 1:32 pm

Cross Across - 30 / 12 : 30 / 12 : Mega Tsunami : Future Shock!

Mega Tsunami

# What is a Mega-Tsunami?
A Mega-Tsunami is simply a gigantic wave, one big enough to cross oceans and destroy cities. They can be thousands of feet high moving at supersonic speeds. They can be caused by huge meteors crashing into the ocean, or by massive landslides. No boat or building hit by a mega tsunami could survive. But now scientists believe that we could be sitting on a time bomb, that sooner or later one will destroy New York, Boston and Miami, and that nothing could stop it.

# When was the Biggest Tsunami?
The largest tsunami in recorded history was in Lituya Bay, Canada, 1958. An earthquake measuring 8.3 on the Richter scale caused 40 million cubic metres of rock to fall into the sea. A wave more than half a kilometre high was created that surged through the bay devastating all in its path. This was not even a mega-tsunami, by these standards it was tiny, but it did show scientists what sort of wave a small landslide could cause. But what would be the effect of a big one?

# Where have Mega-Tsunamis occurred in the past?
Scientists hunted that world for sites that could potentially cause a mega tsunami. They discovered that at least eleven mega tsunamis had happened in the last 200,000 years, caused by island collapses in the Hawaiian and Canary islands.

# Where is one likely to occur in the future?
The island of La Palma, in the Canary Islands off the coast of North Africa, was discovered to be in great danger of collapsing. The island is volcanic and during an eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano in 1949 part of the island slipped a few metres into the sea before stopping. Another eruption could cause the western flank of the island to collapse in the Atlantic Ocean.

# When will it happen?
No one knows. It will happen during an eruption of Cumbre Vieja. It is an active volcano, last erupting in 1949. However the next eruption may not destroy the island, the next 10 may not. Only on thing is certain - one-day an incredible force will surge through the Atlantic Ocean.

# How big would it be?
It would be far bigger than any wave ever seen for thousands of years. 500 billion tonnes of rock are waiting to collapse into the ocean at terrific speed. The collapse would create nearly 5,000,000,000,000,000 (5 thousand trillion) joules of kinetic energy, which would be converted into a colossal wave 900 metres high with awesome speed - within ten minutes it would have moved 250 kilometres. The landslide would continue to move underwater, powering the wave as it goes.

# What damage would it cause?
No coastline in the North Atlantic would be spared. Britain, France, Spain and Portugal would all be badly hit North Africa would be hit by 100 metre waves, but the main wave would travel west. It would storm across the Atlantic in hours, hitting the Caribbean and Brazil badly. However, the real damage would be to the East coast of the USA.

By the time it had travelled the 4000 miles to America the wave would be lower and wider. It would now be just 50 metres high but many kilometres long, allowing it to sweep up to 20 miles in land, destroying everything in its path. Boston, New York and Miami would virtually be wiped off the map. Skyscrapers would be bulldozed as if they weren't there. Bridges would be ripped from their foundations. And virtually every human in these cities would be killed.

There would be indirect consequences around the world. The events of the 11 September wiped millions off stock markets around the world. What would be the effects of the destruction of not only the rest of New York, but also the rest of the East Coast on the world's economies?

# How can we stop it?
Put simply, we can't. We have no technology that can stop a volcano erupting, no support that can hold 500 billion tonnes of rock and no barrier that can stop a wave moving at 500 miles per hour. All we can do is evacuate.

But can we evacuate tens of millions of people with just a few hours notice? Unless evacuation plans were incredibly well thought out, no. Imagine New York's grid locked streets trying to cope with every person in the city on them. The alternative is evacuating when the volcano starts to erupt, possibly giving a few weeks warning. However, the island may not collapse on the next eruption, or even the next ten. Would we risk evacuating millions of people on the off chance? Could we risk not to?

Tsunami ...
09 January 2005 :
Indian PM Vows to Move 'Heaven and Earth' to Help Tsunami-Wrecked Andamans

PORT BLAIR, India : India's Prime Minister pledged to "move heaven and earth" to rebuild the tsunami-wrecked Andamans Islands as he paid a flying visit to the remote chain to view relief operations first-hand.

"The people of India and government are behind you," Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, his voice trembling with emotion, told survivors from devastated Car Nicobar island sheltered at a camp in the archipelago's capital, Port Blair.

"We'll move heaven and earth to rebuild these beautiful islands," he said, unveiling a two-billion-rupee (45.7-million dollar) relief package for the islands, known to holidaymakers as a tropical paradise for their pristine beaches and emerald seas.

Some 1,205 people were confirmed dead and 5,531 still missing and feared dead on the Andamans which lay close to the epicentre of the underground earthquake off Indonesia that triggered the monster waves December 26.

Nationwide the death toll stood at least 10,012 people and 5,624 missing, most feared dead, with the hardest-hit state Tamil Nadu recording 7,941 dead.

As an aftershock registering 5.3 on the Richter scale shook the islands, one of over 100 that have rocked the archipelago since the Indonesian quake, he also promised to call on India's best brains to try to prevent the Andamans being struck by similar disasters.

He said he would ask the science department to form "special teams and study tidal wave patterns and seismic activity so the islands get effective protection." India has already announced plans for a tsunami warning system. "But the need of the hour is urgent relief to be provided to families."

The normally unemotional premier hugged survivors, his eyes misting with tears, as he listened to accounts of losses of family members. "He is a great doctor who has come to heal our wounds," said one tribal man at the camp.

Singh, accompanied by top bureaucrats, also visited shelters at Car Nicobar Island and Campbell Bay in the Nicobar group of island which bore the brunt of the tsunamis. Car Nicobar was home to a big airbase that was flattened.

The prime minister hailed relief and rescue efforts by the armed forces who are struggling to reach many in remote islands as jetties, harbours and moats have been washed away by the waves.

"These beautiful islands have undergone an unprecedented state of death and destruction and our gallant armed forces made every effort to meet the challenge," Singh said.

Military pilots rescued four survivors stuck on Katchal island overnight. "A rescue helicopter virtually went in blindly and picked up the people from very hostile terrain," said Lieutenant General B.S. Thakur, who heads the Andamans relief mission. He had no word on their condition.

Katchal bore the fury of the tsunami with two-thirds of its 7,000 population missing.

The islands are governed by New Delhi. Many islands are out of bounds to outsiders in what the government says is a bid to protect primitive tribes.

The archipelago is made up of over 500 islands strung across 800 kilometres (500 miles). Some 44,200 survivors are in shelters while 3,800 have been sent to the mainland.

On the southern mainland, in hard-hit Tamil Nadu and elsewhere along the mainland coast, survivors struggled to put their lives back together.

Over 5,000 mourners from all faiths staged a silent procession to pay tribute to 1,500 dead relatives and friends near the southern Tamil Nadu Christian pilgrimage centre of Valainkani.

One survivor carrying candles broke down as she approached mass graves where many victims were buried. "I don't have the heart to light up the candles... let them remain in my heart," said K. Ammai, who lost her son and son-in-law.

The mourners later walked to the sea and offered prayers as the scraping sound of bulldozers clearing the debris of wrecked homes rent the air.

"Only prayers can help us get through this disaster," said seashore hotel owner Rangaswamy Rajendran, 61, who lost his granddaughter, as he took part in the procession.

Cross Across - 16 / 1 / 05: SANKRANTI

Image
# SANKRANTI is celebrated with great festivity and gaiety all over India. It happens in January.
# SANKRANTI marks the festival of harvest, in South India and is celebrated to commemorate the beginning of the harvesting season. It is celebrated as Sankranti in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh while it is celebrated as Pongal in Tamilnadu.
* Makara Sankranti is considered very auspicious for several reasons.
# This is the day the sun moves to the north to enter Makara Rasi (the zodiac sign of Capricorn). It marks the beginning of "Uttarayana Punya Kala" which is considered auspicious.
# Makara Sankranti is the most aupicious day when Bhishma Pitama left his body after the battle of Mahabharata. It was on this day about 5000 yrs ago during the end of the Kurukshetra Yuddha, that Bheeshma gave up his body with his own will (Icchaa Marana). After having been wounded by Arjuna, he was laid on a bed of arrows and waited until this period to leave this world.

Cross Across - 17 / 1 / 05: THE TELANGANA AGITATION

THE TELANGANA AGITATION
The Telangana Agitation started in the first week of January 1969 in Khammam when students demanded the implementation of the Telangana safeguards enumerated in the Gentlemen's Agreement. It soon spread to different parts of Telangana. The students got divided into two groups: one demanding the implementation of safeguards and the other demanding a separate Telangana state.

Non-Gazetted Officers threatened direct action on January 11, 1969, if their demands were not met. At the outbreak of the agitation, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh called for an All-Party Meeting and announced that there was a perfect unanimity among the leaders to 'achieve full integration of Andhra Pradesh State.

Two issues were discussed and agreed upon:

1) The appointment of a senior civil service officer to decide the question of Telangana surpluses

2) Relieving of all domicile persons from Telangana posts and providing jobs for them in the Andhra region.
...

The Telangana Agitation continued ... In the beginning it was leaderless. Madan Mohan, a lawyer, formed a forum known as the Telangana Praja Samithi (TPS) in February 1969. Chenna Reddy was sympathetic to these leaders. Violence increased. Firing was often employed to disperse violent crowds. The TPS organized conventions in many towns across Telangana and soon got strengthened. Chenna Reddy came out openly in support of a separate Telangana and K.V. Ranga Reddy gave his blessings to the movement. Law and order continued to deteriorate.
...
The Telangana Agitation did not achieve its important goal of a separate state, but secured assurance of safeguards for the region. Its achievement was quite significant. It wrested for the first time the Chief Ministership from the politically dominant Andhras. However, the new Chief Minister, P.V. Narasimha Rao (former Education Minister in the State Cabinet) was an integrationist and politically a light weight in the Reddy dominated Telangana politics. Ten portfolios in his ministry went to Telangana, three of them belonging to the erstwhile TPS.

Cross Across - 20 / 1 / 05: Regional Disparities in AP...

Regional Disparities in AP...
THE stubborn persistence of regional disparities has always been a problem for mainstream economics. Neoclassical economics typically predicts that markets correct such disparities. This is why, for example, it was argued so confidently that free movement of goods through trade and capital would lead to convergence of incomes across countries and regions of the world.
# "Development of Andhra Pradesh 1956-2001: A Study of Regional Disparities", edited by Y. V. Krishna Rao and S. Subrahmanyam, NRR Research Centre, Hyderabad, 2002, is a welcome book on intra-State regional variations in economic growth and human development within Andhra Pradesh.
# The first point relates to the evident disparity across the regions of Andhra Pradesh, in terms of per capita income and growth. While regional disparity in agricultural yield has declined to some extent over the past five decades, it remains significant. South Telengana, Rayalaseema and North Coastal Andhra are the worst off ...
# Manufacturing industry similarly shows substantial variation, although the ranking of the regions changes completely with South Telengana emerging as the most industrially diversified and fastest growing region. Here it is worth noting that in Andhra Pradesh, despite the much-touted market-oriented policies promoted ... industrial performance has been poor to abysmal.

Cross Across - 26 / 1 / 05: Faction Violence Has Its Roots in Medieval History

Faction Violence Has Its Roots in Medieval History

* HYDERABAD, JAN. 25. The spectre of faction violence that looms large over Rayalaseema region has its roots in medieval history.

# After the decisive Thallikota battle in 1565, in which the Bahamani Sultans joined hands with the Deccan rulers to finish off the Vijayanagara Empire's supremacy in South India, the local chieftains of Rayalaseema usurped power and became independent rulers. History records at least 200 such power centres.

# The Palegars

These chieftains, known as Palegars, were the warlords of the area and used to collect taxes during the hay days of the Hindu regime. They were ruthless in pursuit of their rivals and passed on the baggage of vengeance to the subsequent generations. The British regime, too, was troubled by them.

The miserable living conditions made youth depend on these chieftains. To ensure permanent loyalty, these leaders developed the practice of financially supporting the families that stood by them.

This mutually beneficial arrangement divided the society on strong emotional lines. Caste, too, came to play a dominant role subsequently in independent India.

# Compelling reasons

Backwardness, unemployment, fierce individual loyalties and assured financial support in case of death or injury were some of the reasons that encouraged factionalism here.

# If earlier rivalries were confined to Congress leaders, the advent of the Telugu Desam Party in the early eighties gave a new reason for prolonging the bitter rivalry.

The political links are fragile in many cases and only mean a temporary arrangement for leaders. Many of them switch loyalties with the change of government. This switchover makes parties seek replacement with their rivals.

The fight for supremacy has sustained the factions and the process of development has only given the powerful faction leaders new avenues of revenue like contracts, mining and transport - areas of intense competition and enough conflict.

Elected representatives like Mahabaleswar Gupta, Madduri Subba Reddy, Sheshi Reddy or Siva Reddy fell to such conflicts.

# Dawn of RoC

The advent of RoC (Reorganisation Committee), a naxalite outfit, strongly divided the society into a conflict area of two dominant castes.

Congress alleged that Paritala Ravi was linked to it. The outfit was said to have eliminated at least 19 persons in Anantapur alone out of 35 killed in all since 1994.

Prominent among them were Gangula Narayana Reddy of Maddelacheruvu and Saane Channa Reddy. The Jubilee Hills car bomb snuffed out 26 innocent lives in 1997 and Paritala Ravi escaped with injuries. It resulted in more murders.

# In the last 15 years, 670 Congressmen and 560 TDP men had been done away with, according to police statistics.

Cross Across - 30 / 1 / 05: Peace Pipe Ceremony

Image

* Peace Pipe Ceremony

# The Chief rises from the Council Rock, and calls: "Ho, Channung-pa Yuha, O-hay!" (Oh, Pipe-bearer, bring the Pipe!)

Singing of the ZUNI SUNRISE CALL is heard in the distance.

Then, enter the Herald, staff in hand. He faces the Chief, at the opposite side of the Fire, and sings the SUNRISE CALL again, but omitting every other line which is softly sung off-stage as an echo.

Enter in procession six or eight Maidens, slowly, silently, to tom torn beaten in slow six part time by the leader or Medicine Man. They walk with eyes on the ground, arms straight down at their sides, relaxed. At the end of the procession is a very small boy or girl, bearing the Peace Pipe aloft horizontally, and held in two hands, palms up.

The Chief stands with folded arms as they file in and form a circle about the Fire three (or four) on the Chief's left, three (or four) on his right, the Pipe bearer near him on his right, the Medicine Man on his left, the Herald directly opposite him.

Image
# The Maidens sing the PRAYER OF THE WARRIORS BEFORE SMOKING THE PIPE (Song No. 39), hands held low forward, palms up, then raised high, palms facing in, for the first line; hands slowly lowered, then crossed on breast for second line; hands forward in beseeching attitude for third line; raised high, then arms folded, for the fourth line. The head is thrown back until the end of the last line as the arms are folded, when the eyes are cast upon the ground.

The Chief takes the Pipe from the Bearer. The Maidens sit down, cross legged and cross armed, in the places where they stood, and the Chief proceeds ...

Cross Across - 31 / 1 / 05: The Upsidedown Map Page : It needn't be a Eurocentric World

Image
* It came as a surprise to me after over 20 years of seeing "normal" world maps to come across an upside down one. The most surprising thing was that I found it surprising. It is completely artificial that we have North at the top of a map.

The convention came a few centuries ago when Northern hemisphere, European navigators started using the North star and the magnetic compass. Before that, the top of the map was to the East which is where the word orientation comes from.

Cross Across - 2 / 2 / 05 : CROSSROADS

CROSSROADS

At a crossroads,
indistinguishable from the landscape,
we hopped off the Jalna bus.

Undifferentiated though it was from the stones
and rocks of the earth,
at this crossroads

we disembarked to catch the bus to Ajanta.
At his intersection
no more noticeable than dust, random stones pushed aside,

no different than villages out there,
across rock and dirt,
made of rock and dirt,

under a savage sun,
in sand,
we waited

-- not too long --
for the next bus to stop
at a spot marked

by memory,
no doubt,
for there was no visible mark a stranger could see

to distinguish this bit of land
from the terrible vengeance with which God made grey rocks,
grey earth,

harsh sun.
We stood with our burdens,
as did the Indians,

under the sun
at the junction of one way with another,
where houses, like landscape, lay north,

but not south,
where the sun cast no shadow,
for the stones and walls were too low to impede the light.

The road was as smooth as land
trod by people for a thousand years and more.
I would guess at another way

only with the moon's slow rise.
Beside men of fuchsia turbans
we hopped off the bus,

stood with women
holding spider-fine children.
They, too, from lives of rock and stone,

were bussing to Ajanta.
At the crossroads --
not distinguishable from the land,

but crossing from one state into another,
from Jalna to Ajanta, where mountains are plains,
plains are sky --

the rocks beneath our feet glittered like stars.
The crossroads: one way angled to another,
intricate as the structure of time,

as a junction of the spirit,
crossroads of the imagination,
the decussation of worlds

where bonds,
invisible as light,
light as air

bind us as surely as God's thought.
The center is a line of division,
the joining of worlds,

the dust of union.
