Acceptibility...Possibility in HYD. Will it be ?

Glorious sunshine, with the mercury touching 25.1 degrees at 5pm yesterday helped draw record crowds to the 10th annual Pride March in St Kilda.

A record 99 contingents involving an estimated 60,000 lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and allied Victorians marched while 50,000 people lined the route down Fitzroy Street.

Police Chief Commissioner Christine Nixon might not have turned up - as she did to wide acclaim in 2002 - but the Victoria Police Show Band was there, for the first time.

For an hour before the march the boys and girls in blue treated the always colourful crowd to a mixed selection of all-time hits by several 1970s disco perennials including songs from the Village People and ABBA.

While a hopping and bopping performance of YMCA was cut short by an equipment failure, all was forgiven when Constable Julie Leder saved the day with a rousing rendition of I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor.

It was also the first march to be officially supported and joined by a school, with a contingent representing the Princes Hill Secondary College in Carlton North. Yesterday also marked the passing of 25 years since the socially progressive state Liberal government led by the late Sir Rupert Hamer decriminalised homosexuality

Melbourne's only openly gay mayor, Port Phillip Mayor Darren Ray, was among those who started the march a decade ago. "We always intended that it be a low-key, inclusive show of pride in ourselves and our community without the glitz and razzamatazz of a Mardi Gras," Cr Ray said. "This is about inspiring people. The wider public have all too often thought of gay people as victims. But I see no victims here. The miracle is that these people are survivors."

Cr Ray said his council had sponsored the march for the past nine years after the first march, which was expected to attract 300 but which drew 11,000 or more.

"We grant just $20,000 to this event with absolutely no direct support from the State Government and it returns an estimated $5 million to traders along the route. Now that's a big bang for a very small buck," he said.

The march, followed by a free concert, also helps promote events in other centres, such as Daylesford and theatre events.

Lets be prepared culturally to defer that day.

how much ever we fight it culturally...ideas are difficult to stop. already in the upper crust of mumbai, gays are finding acceptability in social circles and have many have come out of the closet.

think abt hydbad....abt 6-7 years ago, it was impossible to even think of boys n gals in hydbad mixing freely n dating openly...even now many ppl say its against "our culture". now the scene is totally different. open homosexuality would not find it easy to gain acceptance in hyderabad at present...but it cud be different in a decade or two from now.

we shud not forget that homosexuality always existed here too...its just they were always in the closet. when the time comes for them to step out, no one can stop it.

only way to stop them wud be violence which is morally more unacceptable than homosexuality.

True CAD, Violence is no way to stop anything.

What we need to do is stand for what is Indian. And Independant India has been a prateek for morality, and we need to presere it.

To akhil -- Humanity, No I would state that acts of individuals. Humanity is different all together.

Anyway its neither natural nor human to indulge in Same sex relationships. I would consider that animal instinct.

Why is MAN the most powerful of all the creations of this world.

It is because man has been given one power in abundance which has been restricted or nullified to the other creations.

If you agree to the above we will proceed ?

What are you talking about, a same sex inclination is decided before a person is born?

And if so how was it proven?

on a serious note, although I find the concept very much alien to me, I believe in respecting the preferences and choices of individuals including their sexual orientations :)

well said, i agree.

DQ, people who "prepare culturally" to try to block change have historically been knocked on their arse. The only reason that India is the country it is today is that it has always imbraced and respected diversity.

Also DQ, humanity is nothing but the sum total of every individual act, humanity is love, hate, murder, rape. It is the love of a mother for her child, and the lust of a stalker for her prey. Your rose tinted view of our species makes me want to laugh.

Also, define "Indian morality" please? What is perfectly exceptable on the streets of Mumbai will cause outrage in a small Keralan village community. Would you agree that there were many things before the british raj that were acceptable that are no longer? and visa versa?

If your "Indian morality" exists at all, then surely it is a constantly evolving thing, changing with the times and the places it is applied?
