Chord Sequences

by Fiddler » Tue Apr 13, 2004 6:28 pm

Okay, this is for the musicians out there: what's your favourtie chord sequence? In my experience, most instrumentalists have a favourite series of chords, a combination that (pardon the pun) strikes a chord with them.

For example, my favourite sequence, though relatively simple, really appeals to the emotional part of me for reasons I can't explain:

am-F-C-G

Sometimes I like throwing a D into the works, just for effect, but the earlier sequence remains a favourite, however juvenile.

Hey, while on the topic of chords, can anyone tell me what the chord sequence for the chorus of Nickelback's 'How You Remind Me' is? Have figured out the dm-C-G bit, but I'm sure there's a fourth chord too and, even though E seems the most likely, it just sounds wrong. Someone help me out (and don't tell me to use tabcrawler.com, because that feels like cheating)

Hmmm. Much as I hate to admit it, my thoery is zilch, so I have no idea what suspended, seventh, ninth and diminished mean... I just play everything completely by ear, including a bit of lead. I don't even know the notes for each of the open strings on my guitar :D

Ah, the disadvantages of having theoretical instruction in solo instruments... I play a mean synth lead though, so nobody mess with me there

he's currently touring with THE Stevie Vai!!!

"Playing with Steve is always a constant test of one's abilities", he said!

Stevie says the same about Billy!

E - B - F# I (& whoever i played it to) was just latched to this sequence. It's from a song by 'Live' called 'Lightning Crashes'. I found the song in the 'Best of MTV Unplugged' collection, which is easy to obtain I guess.

The tabs n lyrics of the song can be found here: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/l/live/lightning_crashes_tab.htm This is a cousin of tabcrawler, so if u have problems about it, dont click :)

I guess I just use the CFG combination because it's the one I'm most comfortable with.

I play 'Lighting Crashes' with F-C-G and G-am-G-F on the interlude. Love the song for the way it builds up...

Oh man! Now I'm jealous! U guys know how to play the guitar?

I play the casio, usually just play what comes to mind.....the tune's in my head and give the keys a shot........

I'd love to learn how to play the piano and the guitar. Did fiddle around with the strings and the plectrum (isn't it called that?) a wee bit......

Now with work and a few million other things(read work, acads, work acads) on my plate I guess I don't really come in the 'no strings attached' category..........

This post make me recall a wonderful guitar accompaniment for a song named "outside world" which was very popular in 1980s.

Its main chord series:

G - D - Em - C - D - G

I was always impressed at the C chord after Em.

Try this place called Music Cabin on St. John's Road (Sec'Bad). It's opposite the bus stand. There's no parking space, unfortunately... Friend of mine picked up a coupla Gibsons there. They probably have Fenders too.

Directions: Stand in front of Sangeet, facing it. Rotate your person slowly to the left (anti-clockwise) and, placing one foot in front of the other, perambulate forward. When you reach the crossroads, perform the same rotation, except in the other direction (clockwise). Repeat the perambulating motion.

Follow the main road. Look out for Music Cabin on your right, opposite the bus stand. You can very definitely miss it :)

hi guys,

It's good to see that someone has started a board exclusively for music freaks.

Can anyone tell me where can I get an Instruction VCD for picking-up speed on the guitar?

I've a few video clippings in my machine which I've recorded them on CDs and if any is interested in watching & learning from that, I don't mind sharing them. :)

Not sure about videos, but in my opinion, you can pick up speed only by practising repeatedly. Practising with a metronome would help as you can gradually increase the frequency of the 'clicks' and try to keep pace. If you dont get a particular lick, play it slowly till you get it right, then play it a little bit faster and so on. I've found that regular working out of chromatic exercises help, as do the right positioning of the fretboard and the wrists(ergonomics?). So, what kind of songs do you play?

practising licks wont help u at all...if u r a beginner u shud start with chromatics...chromatic exercises are the best to loosen yer fingers on the fretboard.

tried playing john petrucci's chromatic exercise...i thought i got it but then when i SAW the dude play it on his guitar (with blinding speed ofcourse) i felt like killing myself...

ha ha ha.. tell you what? quiet many a times even i used to get depressed and felt like banging the guitar to a wall.

Yes!! What you said was right but you know passion for playing and practising do well when you are a college brat but not when you become a bread winner. I realised this is from my experience. I still don't know what kinda songs I can play because I always have this feeling that I postmortem and make songs horrible when I play it on the guitar

Lately I only touch the guitar on weekends that too when I have no work or when I see or listen to something which inspires me.

If anyone residing in Hyderabad are able to jam up for a few hours .. I'm the first one to run to them .. sit ..have a drink or two.. and enjoy watching them play those strings. adios[/quote]
