New Films Vs Old Films

by Bollywood » Tue Aug 05, 2003 9:35 am

Hello All. Hope you all had a great weekend. I left India in mid 90s & was an avid film buff prior to that. I was mostly interested in films that portrayed middle class values, morals & their day-to-day life, struggles, love stories, etc. I\'m not talking of the village background types & I\'m not talking about the 60s & early 70s (golden age) type either, but some like Khandaan (Jitendra), Gharonda, Golmaal, etc. But if you look at movies today, these movies start overseas, have lots of overseas shooting, etc. The monotonous plots & characters are based in a foreign country. What do you guys feel about this?

Dude, i think the reason for this is two fold. firstly, for the folks living in india, they find the \'hero\' to be a superman, a confident guy who can do anything he wants, so this provides an escapism for them for 3 hrs from their daily frustrations & imagine themselves in place of the hero. on the other hand, for the people living in abroad,, the following is the case: for the guys, there are pretty zinta, amisha & other gorgeous babes, for gals their is hrithik roshan & srk and for post-menopausal aunties, there are indian values (heroes & heroine obedient to their parents and all other crap), heavily embroidoried clothes, sweet songs and finally for the helpless bald father in the family, there is cherishing old homeland memories. landan dekha, paris dekha, aur dekha japan, ............yeh mera india......all happy

How old! I swear to God, I couldn\'t sit through more than five minutes of \"Achoot Kanya\" starring Ashok Kumar and Devika Rani! And Dad used to talk about it as if there wasn\'t any better movie made in Bollywood\'s history!

The debate will go on for ever about this old and new films. Films are time related and are appreciated and liked by the people of thegeneration in which they are made. Making comparisons is a futile exercise. I can rave and rant about films of my era as the best until hell freezes over, but it won\'t make an impression on my children at all, \'cos they will think that the movies of our times suck big time! Talk about Mughal-e-Azam, Mother India, Do Bheega Zameen, Madhumati, Sangam and they burst into laughter and exchange meaningful glances! As if to say that we (oldies) have a stunted taste for movies and true entertaiment.
