<b>Pranayama</b> <br><br>
This is a compound word - Prana + Ayama - which means regulation or channelization of life energy or cosmic energy.<br><br>

Our Rishis (sages) found that we hardly utilise 25 percent of our lung capacity due to improper breathing habit and as a result suffer from respiratory problems such as wheezing, asthma, sinusitis and dust allergy.

<br><br>Pranayama is a legacy left by our rishis and the following are the benefits: <br><br>

1. Helps in utilising the lung capacity fully thereby insulating us from all respiratory hazards such as wheezing, sinusitis, and asthma without a need for medication.
<br>2. Rejuvenates all the internal organs of the human body.
<br>3. Extends the life span by cutting down the breathing rate per minute.
<br>4. Brings better body and mind co-ordination.
<br>5. Helps in controlling the mind.
<br>6. Reduces the ego.
<br>7. Creates a distaste for undesirable habits like smoking, alcoholism etc.

<br><br>
<b>Classification of Pranayama</b>
<br><br>1. Vibhaga or Sectional Pranayama
<br>This consists of Kanista, Madhyama and Jyesta Pranayama and helps to rejuvenate the coarser parts of the human organs.



<br>2. Mudra Pranayama<br>

This comprises Chin Mudra, Chinmaya Mudra, Adi Mudra, Meru Danda and Poorna Mudra Pranayama. These help to rejuvenate the subtler parts of the human organs.

<br><br><b>Variations in Pranayama</b><br><br>

It is possible to practice the Mudra Pranayama a little differently and use it as first aid for one-sided headaches, earache, toothache, dragging pain down the hips, lower back pain, spondylitis, and backache and prevent paralytic strokes and heart attacks. For this, one has to use the appropriate mudra on the side that one has a problem and bypass the other side by placing the palm facing upward. This should be practiced till the pain disappears.



<br><br><b>Dynamic Pranayama</b><br><br>

Bastrika and Mahat Pranayama help in flushing out all toxins from the body and according to Adi Shankara, the regular practice of the three Bandhas or locks will ensure perfect health.

<br><br>The Bhandhas are:<br>

<br>a. Udhyana (navel) Bandha
<br>b. Jalandhar (neck) Bandha
<br>c. Mooladhara (anus) Bandha
<br><br><b>Using Sound to Heal</b><br>

<br>The loud and clear repetition of particular sounds, used by yogis for hundreds of years, has healing value.
<br><br>
\'OM\' - pronounced o-o-o, u-u-u, m-m-m - vibrates through the spine to vitalise the whole body. The sound \'OM\' not only helps in rejuvenating the whole body, it also very effectively prepares one for meditation.


<br><br>
<b>Special Mudras</b>

<br><br>In yogic thinking, our body is made up of five elements - fire, air, ether, earth and water. Each of our five fingers represents one of these elements.
<br>

<br>The thumb represents fire.
<br>The index finger represents air.
<br>The middle finger represents ether or space.
<br>The ring finger represents earth.
<br>The little finger represents water.
<br><br>
It is believed that whenever there is an imbalance - an imbalance occurs when one element is more active or less active - it creates the disharmony in our system that brings sickness.

<br><br>The ten mudras - Prana, Jnana, Bayau, Prithvi, Surya, Varun, Linga, Shunya, Apana Vayu and Apana can be practiced by all for general health and life-threatening illnesses.

<br><br>An exercise to increase the blood flow to the brain and stimulate the endocrine glands for enhancing the cognitive function is also taught in the AGY program. This exercise is to be practiced every day for two to three minutes.

Thanks for all the information. I know that all this will be of immense positive help, especially to those of us who stress out even w/ simple day to day living styles.. and to those of us who need to beat the hell out of ourselves to be the best in this competative world, even to survive.

Whoa !

hey !wake up ! all this will become important to us all Indians once the Westerners say that this is important?!

Like the way they researched and proved about rice mixed with curds, left overnight, eaten as breakfast makes a person have better memory?!! and then we follow it anyways, with reverence, though, now, because they said it is so !!

Come\'on, guys ! have some more pride in what is yours, too !

Sorry and thanks, Take Care. Thanks Durga. I do martial arts, \'tae kwon do, the korean form of martial arts. That is what is available where I live in California. Its so much similar to yoga in certain forms of breathing and meditation. It helps all of us stay focused and improves our body, mind and spirit. Something akin to what yoga teaches us on the longer run.

too good man, well presented. Gayathry has got great power to relax and make you react sensibly to insane situations in life. It may or may not be due to the divinity, but there certainly is a great amount of vibrations that relax you, provided you follow all the protocols associated with it. Its the ultimate.

Yeah Babee we found elixir which was there in our hands in B.C. and we need somebody to make it known that this is good for our health and so we would follow only some time mag tells us by informing about Yoga and not mentioning even name of india atleast , so who is goin to benefit after all some tom will come & say he had found certain exercise & say\'s he did it through research and patents it so that any1 practising has to pay fee for it , then the Govt wakes up & tells that we had practised it loong time and so it\'s ours ...woow anyeeways idea would be that some agencies try to research more on this and say with our hearts and it\'s ours and we had been & will be showing the benefits to every1 , it\'s ours man get back what we had ....need more more research
