Happiness, serenity, peace, no matter how one refers to it, truely is a state of mind. I have come to this realisation almost mid-way through in my life. And so I am working on mastering my mind to attain that state regardless of external events.
Until I get there, what helps me get close is closing my eyes and going on a virtual summer vacation to my favorite vacation spot in Myrtle Beach, SC. Walking on the wet sand bare foot just before sunrise, listening to the waves of the calm ocean hitting the shore, to the music wind creates upon hitting the prairie grass on the sands, feeling the fresh morning breeze brush my body. I can almost read the acknowledgement of these priceless pleasures of life on the face of the occassional passerby, which there are a few that early in the morning. The school of dolphins with their young ones prancing in and out of the ocean and the pelicans in their skilled and majestic flight hovering just above the surface of the ocean in search of their breakfast. Suddenly the crimson lone star rises in the distant horizon lighting up the entire eastern sky with colors so unparallel to greet us with with this bright and new day. The occassional screech of the sea gulls fighting over a catch adds a subtle note of reality to this dream unfolding infront of me. But I set my eyes back to watching the ball of fire rise gradually and thank the Creator for everything. Everything, period. Thats when it dawns on me this is sereneity, peace, happiness, or however else one refers to it as.
And I open my eyes ready to take on the realities of deadlines, family feuds, client expectations, commute and urban life in general with a re-discovered calm.
