Potrayal of women in Indian Cinema

by Lakshmi vishwanathan » Wed Sep 28, 2005 9:58 pm

Indirect suggestion of sexuality in audio visual or print media is certainly vulgar but potrayal of the same may or may not be. A wink of an eye by a hero or heroine may be vulgar but a kiss if in a sensitive way will surely be aesthetic. People and the actors themselves often get away saying that the idea of vulgarity is very subjective and hence we all have the freedom to watch or reject whatever is offered to us. Aesthetic sense is a very intangible sense and if something is vulgar an educated soul can spot it in one glance. Not only that , at any point of time , even in modern times and always, entertainment media needs a gate-keeper to prevent rubbish from entering the media.

I have had enough of the usual hip-hop numbers. Aishwarya Rai is also not far behind in this race of item numbers and lip-touts. So, finally she has done her bit finally after winning the Miss World Crown and being an ambassador of India !!!
