Promote hacking

Yes! you read it correct. Promoting hacking would potentially reduce threat from hackers. A hacker is not any out of the world person. It’s the sheer hacking knowledge and practice that puts him at leverage. And because knowledge or practice of hacking is something that’s not freely available or illegal, a typical programmer loses the edge. Knowledge good or bad should be made available. Practice should be made legal and let internet face the challenge. Such a radical change can lead to the evolution of better anti-hacking techniques and thereby leading to a better and safer internet.



Perhaps, it may take the e-commerce and emailing a step back. It could be a serious blow to the existing technology and innovation. But who says innovation should always lead to a better life? One may have to resort to a laid back life style using the traditional techniques of getting work done. It may slow down the pace of technology growth and may take us a decade back in time. It may even slow down our lives but let’s face it, why push something in a hook or crook, when we are not ready for it?



A justice system is no good to control hacking. Unlike social crimes, internet crimes are difficult to control by law. There are bunch of online casinos who could not reveal their threat against hackers breaking into the customers database for the fear that they may loose image. They have been paying a hefty part of their profits to these hackers at an extra cost that customers are paying. Who knows, the same thing might be happening with our favorite online shopping stops such as amazon or ebay. In one of the news articles, a person has been charged for mistakenly understanding his purposeful mass mailing as spam. The judicial system against hackers makes sense if it is practiced globally. However, there are many countries that have to worry about other serious problems than safeguarding the internet. If one could intercept loopholes in internet, one could also intercept the loopholes in the above laws as well. A handful of amateur hackers might be tackled at a price or effort that does not seem justified.

Before even trying to talk about hacking, you should understand what ``hacking'' means and who a ``hacker'' is. It's sad to see that (computer-)educated people too use the word in the wrong context - just like the media. For your information, hacking is not about breaking into computer systems, networks, stealing passwords, stealing software and above all, it's nothing as exciting as they show on The Matrix. It's all called ``cracking''.



Hacker is someone who enjoys playful cleverness. And to quote probably the last true hacker, Richard Stallman, "Doing something difficult, whether useful or not, is hacking". Richard Stallman is a hacker in the purest sense - Kevin Mitnick is a cracker (well, before the rehab).

If anyone is interested, get a copy of Hacker Cracker by Ejovi Nuwere. He started working as a security professional at the age of 15. Prior to that, he was an established hacker/cracker. He had a choice, either join the other black kids in mugging on the streets of Brooklyn or do something with his life. The book is really good and he tells the differences between a hacker and cracker towards the end.



Offtrack: I get so pissed with the innumerable emails and phone calls asking me to "hack" someone's yahoo or hotmail password. The latest "request" was from one of my former Maryland roomies who has been stalking his former girlfriend in Punjab since she dumped him 6 months ago. Even though this roomie moved to another city, he keeps coming to my place on weekends asking me to hack her passwords saying it is a matter of "life and death". If thats not enough, he has been coming to my office in Washington DC every other day for the last 2 months so that I can "hack her passwords" and he can make a quick decision about "his life". He doesn't listen when I tell him to get on with his life, and that I don't "hack people's passwords". Anyway, I've told the front office personnel to kick him out the next time he comes in

Even I Was Confused Earlier Regarding the Terms Hacker & Cracker.Earlier I Too had Cracked a Friend's Hotmail Password Just By Using a Few Tools Borrowed from the net.All that Just for a Bet's Sake.But I have Realized (Or atleast Think) the true Difference Between them.



And Lone,There's an Indian Prodigy Called Ankit Fadia Who had Written Some books on "Ethical Hacking" and was Quite Popular amongst the College Yuppie Crowd.But Dunno its Technical Implications.Last heard,he too was With a Security Firm.



And a Senior of My College,Now With Wipro, had Recently Exposed a Microsoft Vulnerability.That Shows that there are many Talented People out there who Can be called Hackers.But Thos who Do it With Malicious Intent Ought to be Certified as Loony for Sure

People who do that are called script kiddies and you find them in abundance. Most of them don't even know what they are doing, even if they have the source code which may be commented.

I heard about Ankit Fadia long ago, but thought it was a joke, and that the story about him was something like the news about the O-Yes operating system that fooled most Indians in 1997. Which firm is he with?

A few years ago, I found some exploits in Microsoft products including MS Access and IE, and reported it to Microsoft. Those buggers ignored some of them and included one in their bug-list, but never did so much as to send me a thank you mail or acknowledgement! This is where the open source community beats Microsoft hollow - they encourage active reporting on bugs and suggestions in future releases. Thats why you find open source software more stable and reliable than Microsoft crap.
