Mahakavi Sri Sri - Born on 2nd January, 1910

by Just Another Human » Sun Jan 02, 2005 4:17 pm

One of the great personalities of the Telugu Land - Mahakavi Sri Sri - was born today 95 years ago.

Even though many of us don't even know who he is (for which we should be ashamed of) my hope is that there will be atleast some, if not many, who know him and his works.

Hope all of us remember him on this day (after all, we can't do anything else)

I shall try to include a few of his writings and other information about him gradually.

anyone who wants to bring about a change in the society is nt a naxalite, well, this guy had a tinge of revolution is his words.

But again, it would be like saying Nietzsche and Goethe was the harbinger of the Nazis

Gaddar and Vara Vara Rao are extremist poets, they talk about revolution thru the gun barrel and peace thru violence, well, they have their beliefs, personally, i dont have anything against their literature,on the contrary, i tend to like it., but again, that would nt make a communist. but it really cracks me up when they talk about human rights and shit.

thanks for the response Lizard King. I am not sure about 'manadii oka bratukeyna..." but I am 95% sure it has to be either written by Sri Sri or Sirivennela Sita Rama Sastry. I will confirm it as soon as I can :-)

Yes. let all of us try to add in the links and other stuff to the treasures of Sri Sri.

Thanks a lot for this link Ilayaraja_fan. I was about to paste this link as well.

For other who do not know, this is a site maintained by Sri Sri's son. Even though it may be a little inconvenient to navigate the site at first, we will get used to it going forward. But frankly, this site has got a lot of information on Sri Sri than any other source online. Even though this site was updated long back, it still adds that 'personal touch' as someone from his family gives his insights as well.

When Sri Sri was alive, he was known for his bold nature, which was often mistaken by people that it was a 'care-a-damn' attitude. But Sri Sri always tried to bring in the harsh realities of the society to the fore and was always on the receiving end of his 'peers'. But yet, people loved him, his poetry and his thoughts. All he knew was to speak his mind, whatever it was.

He always tried to motivated and inspire the people in and around him and of course, it all depends on the people how they take it.

People of my age (21) dont really know much abt Sri Sri bcoz of the media's lack of respect for our own culture. But what little we do know is from that Kamal Hassan movie "Akali Rajyam". Can someone quote a few dialogues from that movie which were written by Sri Sri?

Hi Jas.. that was a good opinion. Unfortunately, we are all entangled in too many things that we do not have time. And no easy resources to support us either. But we need to do the quest all by ourselves Jas..

Resources are everywhere waiting for us to dig them up. Let us try our best. By the way, I am 22 yrs old as well ;-) so that shouldn't be a reason.

This (Manadi oka brathukenaaa...) is a great verse of Sri Sri garu and was used in the movie "Gayam". Srivennala Seetarama Shastry song's 'Nigga deesi adugu, ee siggu leni jananni ...' in "Gayam" should have been inspired by Sri Sri gari's verse.

Ilayaraja_fan had provided this wonderful site to better know about the revolutionary poet.

The most famous work of sri sri is mahaprasthanam and in it I like Jagannatha Ratha chakral the best. Its been a long time since I read that, so dont remember any of those poems now.

Off topic: I am looking for Venki patalu.... can anyone tell me the name of the author (subba something) and where I can buy that? I read few in my fathers notes.

the full poem is

Khagapathi Amrtuthamu thega

In the play, this is said by the legendary Gireesham character.. NTR played that character in the movie.

Apart from his famous contributions to telugu literature, he also penned some memorable movie songs.. not only his trademark revolutionary songs, but some amazing romantic numbes too!

some of them that come to the mind instantly

kala kaanidi viluvainadi - velugu needalu

paadavoi bhaaratheeyuda - velugu needalu

haayi haayiga jaabilli - velugu needalu

evaro vasthaarani edo chesthaarani - bhoomi kosam

undile manchi kaalam mundu munduna - raamudu bheemudu

naa hrudyamlo nidurinche heli - aaradhana

and my fav .. manasuna manasai brathukuna brathukai - Dr. Chakravarthi

in an interview, when asked who his "cheli" was in the song "naa hridayamlo nidurinche cheli", his answer was communism :)
