Local theatres chopping last 20 Mins of Swades

Hello!

This is to bring to the notice of the thousands of moviepatrons who would

have seen the latest Ashitosh Gowarikar film 'Swades'.Between Friday and

Saturday.

My father and sister had been to theshow at 11:15 Am on Saturday ( Dec 17th)

at Ramakrishna Gilleratti. Theywere extremly satisfied with the film but

felt the climax should havebeen better. I then went to the same 11:15am show

at the same theatre onthe next day ( Dec 18th) only to find that my father

and sister watchedabout 20 mins less of the movie.They and others watching

the show hadnot seen the complete film at all!

Apparently the theatre chopped offthe last 20 mins involving one song and a

very important climax. Notwatching the last 20 mins would make the patrons

mis-understand theentire film and hence, they come out dis-satisfied. This

is disgustingto note. Why would a theatre of such repute chop-off the last

20 minsgiving a false impression that the movie had concluded, when the

mostimportant part remained!

I fail to understand this behaviour of thetheatre owner who had taken the

viewers for granted. Later on Sunday icame to know that few of my other

friends had seen the chopped versionin other theatres like Sri Ramana and

Shiva.

As a avid movie watcheri seek an explanation to this behaviour of the

theatre owner. Whatprevents them from screening the entire film when they

knew all alongthat 'Swades' was a lengthy film with good story value.Also on

a macrolevel, they have no right to tamper with a copyrighted material.

Theyare only supposed to screen 'As-is' and any shorterning of the film is

aprerogative of the the producer and/or the Censor Board and NOT of

thetheatre owners.I called up the theatre and could not reach the

manager,however a theatre staff totally denied my allegation.

I on behalf ofthe thousands of the movie patrons want an explanation of why

this wasdone and who gives them the right to do so.

for those who don't know. Most theatres end the show when Mohan Bhargav leaves geeta to go the USA. After this scene, you have the main song 'yeh jo desh hai tera....' and 15 mins more of the story!!!

maybe the film had so many reels that the projectionist missed one by mistake :lol:

in 1996 i was watching raiders of the lost ark in sterling and the projectionist swapped the positions of 2 reels in the middle! :shock:

i cud sense the story jump out of context half way n all were left confused. suddenly after abt 20 minits we cud see the scenes that we thot were censored :lol:

I guess modern multiplexes use a different technology ( may be a DVD) to screen thats why i ended up watching more of Kal Ho na Ho after 2 months in the multiplex than i saw on the day of release!!...the entire Kal Ho na ho theme music ( not the song) was chopped... which i watching later in the multiplex..

All said and done, why chop the climax!

A Similar thing happened to me some years ago....I had seen the Movie "Aankhen"- Amitabh,Arjun n Akshay at a theatre in Mumbai....

The film ended when Akshay Kumar & Arjun Rampal find the jewels hidden in Paresh Rawal's Harmonium......I thot the film ended there....

Even the titles rolled out at that moment.....

Years later...when Sahara Telecasted "Aankhen" on TV I saw that the ending was entirely different...I mean there still were some 10 mins of the movie to go......I was absulutely stupefied to know that....It enraged me no less to think that the theatre had conned me and moreover i did'nt know it for Quite a long Time :evil:

I had no way of asking them....I saw the Movie in Mumbai when i was on a Holiday there and the second time I saw it at home a good year or two after I had seen it first......All i could do was Gnash my teeth and curse the Theatre-wallah :evil:

Well actually that was the way the entire film was shown throughout India.When people didnt like Amitabh get arrested,they added the extra scene.You wernt the only guy who saw that version.Only the VCD/DVD's had that last scene.

i dont really mind a song or two getting chopped off in a 3 n half plus hour movie...but not any vital scenes... :roll:

Dude! lets not build a tolerance level for songs or scenes being cut. Saying if songs are cut, then its ok is not acceptable.

I am sure it violare copyright laws or atleast some law. The movie in its totality would be agreed to be screen. One has absolutely no right to tamper or alter the product in any forum to suit business needs. A movie like swades was a long one and i am sure distributors would have communicated the same to those willing to screen. That does not mean you decide what the audience needs to watch. Nothing should be cut, even if a boring song is repeated twice!

And,chopping the climax alters the story entirely. I would like to sue the theatre if i get some more subjects who have seen the chopped version.

boss! i didnt mean its acceptable

what i meant was that personally i wud lament much if a song or two is cut becoz i am against irrelevant songs in movies.

he returns to india....the movie ends with mohan washing his feet in the river after a bout of kushti with the post master.
