I have never understood the deal behind marking students' attendances at the undergrad level. Upto school (includes 10+2 as well), yes, it is important. But I believe after that we all have to take responsibilities for our own actions.
The place I did my engineering from does not have the concept of attendance. The students seem to do quite alright. Some of them have been the likes of guys behind hotmail and Amkette floppies.
What that place gave us was space, and I think it is that space that helped us grow. Yes, it was misused - freedom tends to be misused. But those who used it well graduated as well-developed human beings.
Thoughts?
