Volunteer needed in Tamilnadu

Hi. I am an English girl who has teamed up with an American guy to form (along with some other members) Project SEED (sustainable enterprise and educational development). We are working with tsunami affected Dalit communities in Tamilnadu and Dalit focused NGOs.

The main organization we are working with, HRFDL (Human Rights Forum for Dalit Liberation) has asked me to try and find a volunteer to work for some time in their office in Mayiladuthurai. It will also be necessary for the volunteer to also make field visits and attend meeting in the rest of Tamil Nadu – mainly in Nagapattinum district. HRFDL are working with Dalits in the whole of Tamil Nadu, not just those on the coast.

The plight of the Dalits has been a long up hill struggle since the establishment of the caste system some 3000 years ago, they still remain a neglected society in modern India. The tsunami and post relief and rehabilitation efforts similarly mirror the discrimination the Dalits face in other areas and in other walks of life.

It may be that the Dalit villages didn't suffer as many deaths or loss of houses as the fishing communities, but the main employment of these guys was agricultural labouring, or coolie workers. Since tsunami masses amounts of salt water were deposited on the land killing the crops and rendering the land uncultivatable, until reclamation can take place, which will be close to a year. So these guys are out of work. Even the ones who used to help the fishermen carry nets or launch boats are still out of work as many fishermen refuse to return to sea, waiting to see what else they can get out of the government or NGOs.

The situation in many of the Dalit hamlets is pretty dire, children are without clothing and all are without good nutritional food. They survive on a diet of 99% rice, rice that the government has provided, but the rice they were suppose to receive was sold by officials and substandard, “last-year’s” rice was bought in replacement (the profits being pocketed of course).

Accommodation will be provided to you during your stay in Mayiladuthurai. Your main tasks will be writing reports, consolidating data, administration and funding permitting help with organizing the logistics of opening 2 new schools. You will be expected to stay for some months working with HRFDL.

If you think this is something you would be interested in perusing please call John Paulos of HRFDL on +91 43642 51216 or e-mail hrfdltn@sify.com.

Alternatively if you wish to speak to me you can call my cell +91 9894546139 or e-mail me at ruthwsg@yahoo.co.uk

We are looking for someone to be able to start asap.

We look forwards to hearing from you and seeing you in Tamilnadu!

What do you know of the tsunami situation!!? We have been working in fishing and Dalit villages since Feb and have done a lot of surveying and investigation work.

Is it that you deny that there is a prevalent caste system in India!? Do you not know about the discrimination the Dalits face, with tsunami and otherwise? If you have been to some of the villages that I have and spoken to the people there you will realise that there are massive discrimination problems.

Explain why did you try to divert in ???Vulgar form?

Does anyone else out there agree?

Just for your info I have had a response from an Indian who straight away has offered her help. But we are also looking for more volunteers if there are any more of you out there.

I wait for your response CtrlAltDel

It may not be a heart warming topic for you. Because you did not suffer by tsunami. You don't know the pain.

Why Do You Have to Find Fault With Everything??

I Did Say that it was a Heartwarming Topic in the first place.

Yes,I Admit that I Did'nt Suffer from the Tsunami But I Can Understand the Suffering & pain of the Affected People.I myself am a Witness of the Super Cyclone that Ravaged Orissa Some Years Back and had Participated in Relief Work Back then.

And Now,when i Feel Like helping but am Unable to do so,you come ahead and say that "it may not be a heartwarming Topic" for me......

Seriously, will our Squabbling help those People out there? Do Some Introspection before Pointing Fingers Blatantly.

Hey Mark. That was profound. In a way u just took the words right out of my mouth. I'm 21 and about to take up a job in one of those oh-so-numerous IT companies in Hyd...and I am not interested...I've always been interested in working for NGOs and such organisations. I dont have the courage to do that at the very beginning of my career. You on the other hand have had the courage to quit your job and join in helping make people's lives better. What else could be more satisfying and more rewarding than that?! Of course you could pursue writing too.. (thats if u want to!). So chuck worrying about "death at 70" and look towards the bright future thats waiting for u (Optimism sure helps! ). Wishing you tons of luck! And do keep posting!

Dear NGO, Manju

Please don't jump to conclusions. Your attitude doesn't quite fit in with the kind of voluntry work you do.

*It's funny tho. Maybe the wise one should change her name  *

There are two ways of thinking.

I belong to Rayaluseema, which was terribly affected by tsunami.

So I have the responsibility.

At one point NGO is true.

There are widespread malpractices in distributing the money to those affected.

Those communities politically influential got more money and help.

This factor was very much true in Tamilnadu, which I know.

So I agree with NGO in this point.

May be Dalit community should have been really affected.

At the same time I doubt these NGOs itself.

So many NGOs has mushroomed recently.

That too in a time Mr. Clinton is coming on 27 May as UN special envoy for tsunami.

He is expected to announce huge amount of money.

So I very much doubt these NGOs.

They should first prove themselves that they ARE NOT FRAUD at the first instance.

That was so dumb of you... you would rather know a board and the nature of the board, i.e. their reactions to different topics properly before posting some topic over where. Somehow the sincere and interested people in the board are put-off by too much of holier-than-thou attitude from people like you.

That's right, keep finding fault with everyone  . Why do you 'NGO's think that only people already working with an NGO 'know the pain' and other s are not concerned?

This is a very sensitive topic and it was a good idea of posting it in a board whcich has many members. However, jumping at each remark and treating it as derogatory is not going to help much.
