Help Planning Holiday II

by Jaszalcatraz » Mon May 09, 2005 1:54 pm

I'm going to Sikkim with my parents on the 20th. My first vacation in the last 4 years and I want it to be fun. Anybody got any suggestions and advices for me?

A small intro to the lonely planet guides will also be helpful

Pleces in Sikkim

1. Pelling - nice views of the Kanchenjunga from here. Make sure you book a hotel in what is known as "Upper Pelling" for views from there are better than the hotels in "Lower Pelling". Travel agents here do organize 1 day tours. Also, there is a village called Dentam that you can visit from here.

2. Rabongla - There is a nice resort called Narsing Village Resort. Very nice & quaint place in the hills. You should seriously consider going here. From Rabongla, you can visit a lot of monasteries, do some hiking and seeing some villages.

3. Barshey Wildlife Sanctuary - aweseom view of Kanchenjunga if you are blessed with good weather. If you go during May-June, there should be a pretty bloom of rhododendrons (unless the rains are early or delayed). Staying in this place was a very different experience!

4. Gangtok - commericalized part of Sikkim. Here is where a lot of travel agents appear. Lake Tsomgo & Nathula Pass tours start from here. There are plenty of hotels. But make sure you book a hotel in case you are going in peak tourist season. This part of Sikkim is most visited by the average tourist.

5. Thaangu - a small village in N. Sikkim. This was on our way to Lake Gurudongmar. Note : If you are not of Indian origin, you may not be permitted to visit these areas.

Regarding cost, the accomodation is very reasonable (around Indian Rupees 150-500/-). What will cost you is the cost of hiring a jeep to move from one part of Sikkim to another. Bus service is there but jeeps is what most people rely on.

Do send a message if you want any more information! BTW, when are you planning to visit Sikkim?

gangtok

i know for sure that now people dont have to come from darjeeling to siliguri & then head for gangtok - because there is a direct route from darjeeling to gantok now.

It's about 3 hours from there to Gangtok if I remember right, you stop at the boarder for sikkim to sign in. Keep an eye out for amusing rhyming couplets on the road signs with such gems as "Better Mr Late then Late Mr" or "My curves will test your nerves" "Driving faster ends in disaster" and my favorite "Be quiet and let him drive" !

Do not go by distances on maps. Many times we found our calculations wrong as the time it takes on the winding mountainous paths is slightly more than we'd expect. Again, the time I have mentioned here are assuming you are renting a jeep all for yourself. If you choose to go by local transportation or shared jeep, it will take longer.

Also, all travel will involve going on winding roads. So, it will be an issue if one is the kind that gets nausea on winding paths.
