friends coming to Hyd (what to do)

by mark » Fri Apr 22, 2005 1:37 pm

i have some friends coming to Hyderabad in a few weeks, but only for 2 days. They arrive on wednesday and leave on friday, and they'll be working both days. I was trying to think of something they could do in the evenings to get a flavour for Hyd.

I have a feeling 1 evening will be devoted to pearl shopping, TCS gets a discount in one pearl shop in Panjagutta.

The other evening i was thinking of taking them down to the Charminar, and wandering around the bazaars there, looking for old books/antiques/etc.

Any other ideas? also if they wanted to taste good Hyderabadi food where's the best place in town for that?

thanks guys, i'm useless at organising things like this, any suggestions would help

one of the evenings take them out to charminar and wander around it, esp Lad Bazaar for bangles/costume jewellry. there are many good biryani joints that part of town, but do not bet on hygenic surroundings. take them to Paradise (where we had gone) for hydbadi biryani, or if thats too far, pack biryani frm Hyd'bad House as a second choice.

one full evening in not required for pearl shopping...take them to that pearl shop and after they buy the stuff u still have time to spare. if doing this on on thursday u can end the night at TDS...thursday nights are usually Karaoke Nights at TDS and u can hve some fun too!

Shilparamam is also a good place to visit on one of the evenings for antiques/handicrafts.

if they are girls, lemme take care of em...
wtf? i no longer care if my posts hurt yr feelings

Great suggestions, Goddy!

I suppose that they would be going to Hi-Tec city anyway. Necklace road is a very nice place for a drive, especcially during late in the night.

A visit to Moazzamjahi fort for Hand-made Ice-cream would be nice. And don't forget to take 'em out for some Haleem, whichever place is good.

Salarjung museum would not be suitable for evenings.

Wil try to add more...

from point of view of a non-indian visiting for 2 days, there is nothing worth seeing over there.

there are very few haleem joints in non-ramzan months, and whatever are there are not upto mark in hygiene, at least from PoV of a non-indian. thats why i suggested paradise for biryani.

Hotel green Park serve wonderful haleem with their midnight biryani, but as CADsays, depends on whether eating at a hotel would hold much charm for a non-indian or would they prefer to have it at a dhaba sort of a place...

Mark what are your friends like? i mean, what would they like doing? Are they fussy? Do they think of India as an exotic place, cause then you will ahve to show them typically exotic Indian places....Also, would they like to shop for silks and handicrafts?

Thanks for all the advice guys.

They're here on a business trip, doing a lot of travelling around the country, finishing up in Hyd i think, so they'll probably be wrecked. they're both well travelled anyway so i doubt they'd be fussy. They've been working for an Indian company for 2.5 years so i doubt they see India as an exotic place (although this'll be their first time actually being here i think)

Midnight bryani might be a great idea actually.

They'll have had a few weeks of Delhi, Agra, Rajistan, Mumbai, etc. so i'd say they'll have had their fill of exotic locations (which is just as well  )

By the way Mark, if the shop at Punjagutta is 'Mangatrai Pearls', they have their main branch near Charminar, which have a better collection in pearls and I think the discount is valid there too. The one at Punjagutta has costlier things and more of gold ornaments... but of course, it's your call :)
