The Doctor is Dead

Hunter S Thompson has died. Author of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, pioneer of gonzo journalism, political junkie. Chairman of the Aspen Drug and Gun club, their motto: "Death before Dishonour, Drugs before Lunch".

He once ran for Sherrif of Aspen, on a mandate which promised free drugs for all. He was narrowly defeated, which he said was just as well, as he would have been thrown in jail if he had had to keep his campaign promises.

he went to Vietnam to report on the war...

yeah it is. The book is based on semi real events (pure gonzo journalism, Raoul Duke is Hunter S Thompson) He was quite happy with the film i think. Johnny Depp hung around with Thompson for months before the filming in order to get ever mannerism down, he does an excellent job in the movie.

Anyway, sorry for the abrupt response earlier. Basically HST was what a hippy would be like if you put him 10 km under the earths crust, waited for 10000000 years, dug him out, polished him off, and threw him really really hard at people. He lived his ideals, from the simplest (he was a VERY private person, to the point of paranoia) to the most outragous and complex (his belief in total lack of gun control, drug control, people control) He was an elloquent voice for a group of people who have lacked an elloquent voice for a long time.

He was a person who saw through the rosey picture of the world we paint for ourselves to the dark ugly heart of humanity.

He was a sharp, obnoxious, unsavoury criminal, and i loved him to bits! There will never be another. AFAIK, the only casualty of HST's was HST himself. he's a saint in my book.

anyway there's far more to Hunter S Thompson than my insane ramblings, he's been held up as one of the best american writers of the past century, and for originality i'd definitely agree.
