Credit Cards for newbies

by Rakesh » Tue Jan 18, 2005 11:07 am

Am a software professional. Been in the US for quite a while and have an excellent credit history out there. Well I could probably get any card out there if I wish. Out here though I am seeing just rejections. As per ICICI rules if you are a software professional you must have had a indian credit card for atleast an year. Heck, if I had an Indian one I wouldn't have bothered them. Citibank - well they seem to go by location and the place I stay-Dilsukhnagar seems to be on the barred list. Someone ought to sue them for discrimination.

Anyone has info on which banks are willing to give cards to software folks - for people living in such backward areas and working in such high risk professions?

Hey Rakesh! Cool down yaar.

I think u tried only a few of the franchisee who more often than not, don't have the right information.

what i would suggest you is contact the bank directly rather than any DSA's. Better still, u can go to their websites and log an enquiry or call the nation wide helpline.

I don't think they wouldn't be willing to offer you a credit card. The companies would be more than happy to offer a Credit Card. Try this!

You could also try out HDFC, ABN AMRO and SBI. Citibank and ICICI are way ahead in the numbers race and so, can tend to be a bit discriminatory. No use suing them as all banks have a disclaimer giving them a right to reject anyone without giving any reason whatsoever. I personally had ICICI and Citibank reject me for no reasons. This, after I held an account with Citibank.

You said you're a software professional. Which organisation are you working for? Do you get your salaries through cheques or is it an electronic transfer to your account? Which bank do you hold your account in? All these questions matter a lot.

Also, be a little restrained in applying for cards. If you get rejected, you cannot reapply to the same bank for the next 6 months. Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Sameer, maybe you could answer this for me: As you know, I'll be coming to Hyderabad soon. I dont want to carry too much cash with me. So, if I wrote myself a personal check (my own account) for the amount of cash (dollars) I want to bring to India----Can I cash that American check in Hyderabad, in dollars?

My bank is Southtrust Bank. But I'll be switching banks before I come. I'll be a Bank Of America customer.

You need to have a good credit history in India to get a credit card in India, is it not? Your american credit history will be of no use as far as Indian banks are concerned. The way this credit thing works in India is entirely different from the way it works in US, as India doesnt have SSN equivalent. That is why a credible source of income and place of residence is important for getting a credit card.
