semi-spam - a way of dealing with spam?

by mark » Wed Dec 15, 2004 6:08 pm

I tried for a long time not to spam but now that i know you guys better, i'm starting to post crap in other peoples threads, and feeling really guilty about it (sorry Sherry for diverting your Pearls thread into a discussion of Airlines  )

And Enigma's beautiful thread (i'm afraid to post there cos it's too nice) made me think, most of the threads that we respect too much to spam sink like a stone before people can get a chance to respond to them. (cos of all the spam in the other threads)

So i was thinking, i'm going to adopt a policy of Semi-Spam. each time i click on reply, i'm going to closely look at the thread name first. Then i'll try to write 2 lines on-topic for each line i write that's off-topic.

Anyhow, that'll be my contribution. Any other ideas? (cos seperate threads for it don't work based on past evidence), and do you guys think this (spam) is a problem or not?

You did not spam on my thread, me man! :D

I think your idea is fantastic. I have been (more or less) following that same idea since I joined up in FHDB.

In adition to what you said, people would be better off waiting until they have a substantial contribution to make before posting on a topic thread.

And, everyone should be really careful about (potentially) good topics, and try to keep them clean, beacuse almost 10,000 people will be reading it in the threads lifetime. Many people get a lot of help from the discussions on these boards, so it is very important that we keep important threads clean.

Hi Mark!

At first I was annoyed with all the spam too.......then, since I had no other choice---I had to simply accept and expect it. Since spam is the norm on this board.

I was dead against spamming....and never did it. Now, I just go with the flow. I still dont really spam, I do post on-topic. But sometimes, I cant help saying something totally unrelated. VERY RARELY!

I'll stop though. :)

The idea sounded really nice...so I decided to try it out right here. One addition to the original idea though. Let the on-topic material always come first and the semi spam later.
