Past, Present, Future

by oneminutecooler » Tue Nov 30, 2004 6:32 am

Hey,

THis is my first topic that I'm posting. I just wanted to know what everyone else thinks.

I spoke to a really close friend of mine today who I had not spoke to in a very long time. We were talking and came upon a small topic. Past and Present.

Do you think that our past is our future? That the past repeats itself (a.k.a 'history repeats itself') Or do you think that, what was once there, can not come back?

When I was talking to my friend, I told her we should do some things we use to do back when we use to see each other a lot. She said that it is different and that, the past cannot be the same in any way as the future.

What do you think?

Also, do you prefer the past, present, or are you waiting for the future anxiously and why?

OMC, in my opinion, whatever present we have is a reflection of our past, of all the things we have been thru and all those thinigs we have accumulated in the name of learning over the years and it does have its influence in our present and the future, which of course would be "present" then.

And often, history does repeat itself say for example, how many times does it happento us that we do some thing, burn our hands and do the same thing over and again? say for instance, broken relationships, we break up and go thru the break up in a rough way, not to mention, we think we did learn a lesson from it and end up doing the same thing again and again. I guess its all about priorities in life and the stuff we consider more important than the others. As u ve said, u cannot do he same thing with ur friend which u used to do, ages ago. i guess it all burn down to priorities, maybe there was something drastic happened between the 2 of u or it is just that she or u have more important things in life to deal with rather than spend time with each other or " do the things u used to do" in the past.

past-present-future, just a straight line in he fourth dimension, just that we cannot travel back and forth.

I think that living in your past is fine. I do that as well. But always remember to look in the present and future or else you'll miss a lot. But living in the past shouldn't be bad or hurtful, should it?

Remembering the good times is always important. But also making more memories and good times in the future and present is also important.

And everyone changes. Actually, people change constantly without realizing it. Yesterday my favorite color was blue, and today it is black or green. Even small changes are a change. As long as it isn't a bad change, I think it's alright

past is something thats over....gone....finished. never dwell in it unless u want to wallow in depression or bask in past glory.

future is something uncertain and unknown. never dwell too long in it unless u want to spend time dreaming. u can go around thinking abt future for sometime, say abt 10% of time, else u wont be ready for the uncertainities.

live in the present. live for the moment. thats the most sensible thing to do for a stress-free life.

btw, the above applies to the daily life of an average person. in activities like formulting plans and policies, u have to consider all the three dimensions.

well i believe in living in the present, but we cannot forget our past neither can we not have any plans for the future.

coz history is the grreatest of all teachers. and this applies to individuals too!

History can and most often does repeat itself---unless the person or people make(s) a conscious effort to avoid it because it dangerous, bad or unethical. Having history repeat itself isnt necessarily a bad thing, it just depends on what youre talking about.

You two are obviously older and therefore carry more responsibilities on your shoulders. Its not like your carefree days gone by where you could simply skip on over to her house to play and goof off. As you two have grown, theres a lot of water under the bridge. Situations are different so each one had to play their role with caution and care. The way you are now, the way you think and act will not be the same ten years from now. Well, even 3-5 years from now. Even tomorrow you might have to change for some reason.

The future is a mystery. We should just embrace the present and live life to the hilt.

lol! I love my past! I had such a great time----such fun! Then there were times where I just shudder if I think about them. My present is fine too, no real complaints. So far Ive lived a pretty eventful life! Is that good or bad, I dont know. But I am excited about what tomorrow brings. I welcome tomorrow with open arms. Inshallah, its a good life Im looking at.

OMC, the past always looms over the future, the past cant be erased and shouldnt be erased because we learn from it. And after us, our children can learn from it and then their children can learn from it.

"You can never go back home" is my favorite saying, which means that we can never go back to that comfy time in our lives where everything was good and we had no worries, no trouble, no stress......NOTHING. That was home, because it was our comfort zone, and we can never go back there again. But we can mould our future around that time and form a new comfort zone.

Very true! Thanks everyone :) Yesterday, I couldn't wait for the future because of a problem I was having. Today, I wish I could go to the past and erase it. But what is done is done, and all you can do is look to your future and remember your past. And right now, my future says that I am going to go and find some food because I am starving! :D

I do not think they "always" change. Everyone changes. You just do not realize it when you do. And the change does not always have to be a bad one. Just because someone changes does not mean that you can not "hold on to them" in some way. If you really care about the "person you care for" then a change should not matter so much, unless it is a bad, drastic change.

the problems usually crop up when our partner does not change as per our expectations. we shud stop trying to mould other adults into what what we want....other than a few external characteristics, we cant change an adult's nature.

I completely agree. And just because there is one "flaw" in someones character, it doesn't mean that you lose them. Or atleast that is what I believe. If I gave up a friend each time they changed at all, I would have gone around the worlds list of friendstwice and back again! Lol.
