West or India ? Which is more safer for the middle class.

I was watching this program on tv the other day and i realised that we in India are a lot more safer than in the West.

In the West we have to deal with Car jackers, Muggers, Sex offenders, Disgruntled employees, White supremists, and plain wachos and everyone has a gun in hand.

Atleast in India we have a very few well armed criminals and even they only torment the rich or the poor.

Since the discussion boards are frequented by people who lived all their life in the West and some who lived some part of it there, maybe we can get some ideas on this topic.

In general i agree with you, however we tend to be a bit more alarmist in the west, so a lot of what gets reported in the international news is blown out of proportion.

whereas lots of stuff happens in India that barely makes the local headlines. am i right in saying there was a schoolbus bombing in Hyderabad over last weekend? If that was in London, Manchester, New York or Dublin we would be hearing about it for the next few months, exclusive coverage of the trial if they caught the guys behind it etc.

I read about it on page 3 of DC. And it was an extremely uninformitave piece (the bus "was exploded" rather than actually telling us who was responsible, passive voice used throughout)

My ex and I were mugged at knifepoint in London, walking home in our quiet residential area at about 11pm on a saturday night. Most of my friends have had similar experiences at some stage.

The thing about everybody having a gun in hand is just US though, apart from farmers rifles and army men i've never seen a gun in Ireland or UK (police don't carry guns either, there's rarely a need) most of Europe is the same.

Every country, state, city and town has their share of scares. I dont think India and the West can be compared in this context. The difference is that the crimes in America for the most part are reported and are added to the statistics, whereas Indian crimes, rapes, robberies are left unreported.



Dont get me wrong, I dont like America as much as I like India (Hyd), but a fact is a fact.

This is a myth that most of the crimes in India go unreported. Rape is probably the only crime that's left unreported due to fear of social backlash. Otherwise...robberies, thefts etc. are reported in more than 90% of the cases.

India is definitely safer for Indians. There are some places in USA where one can be safe. But unfortunately majority of the places are highly unsafe.

My friends were robbed and beaten to death in a train enroute to Mumbai. Similar experiences when some other friends in Bihar and north-east. Even though I travelled a lot, never did such thing happened to me. May be I just don't look like a guy worthy of mugging

Coming back to the topic, I still think for a decently well off middle class family India is a safe place.

Or maybe its just watching all those crimefiles and investigations on discovery make one wary of the crimes in the west as they did for me.

when did hyd become a state. . and on the topic i guess its a lot safer in india from the incidents that i have heard. yeah there r some areas/states like bihar and UP which r not safe and its best to avoid those places as much as possible
