Diet of choice

by Aquarian81 » Fri Jun 18, 2004 6:57 am

Hi guys,

Its been a while since Ive been on, so a BIG HELLO to everyone.

There is a saying (probably made up by a vain, anorexic model) that "You can never be too skinny". And so in this world where looks are everything, much of the population (women anyway) have tried 2-3 diets, sometime during their lifetime.

I have too, and the choice of diets were :Atkins, Fit for Life and the Green-tea diet.

So Id like to know what (if any) kind of diet that you ever followed, and how were the results?

Wow, either you guys are a very healthy bunch who never needed or wanted to try a diet out. I am somewhat of an experimenter..........I ALWAYS try anything new, and I do the same with diets. Ive always been lean and healthy, but trying out a fad diet is fun.

just a diet will not help yr health unless accompanied by exercise. moreover a diet does not mean food deprivation. rather it means eating the right thing in the right quantity.

last one year my exercises were greatly reduced due to work pressure and then laziness and i became over weight by 10 kgs (those from the firt fullhyd meet wud remember me at that stage!)

when my wife started needling me, i started going to a fitness club, worked out vigourously for an hour every morning. since exercises alone wont help, i regulated my diet: the "eat right" formula. i put down 9 kgs in 3 months and working out the last 1 kg now :)

the challenge wud now be in maintaining the weight for the rest of my life...

Aqua: i heard of those diet names u mentioned. but i dont know what they mean and i am sure many others here dont too. plz explain.
wtf? i no longer care if my posts hurt yr feelings

CAD, The diets that I mentioned are low-carb diets. The green tea diet is simply having 3-4 cups of green tea everyday. As a natural appetite suppressant, green tea does promise a small amount of weight loss, temporary though.

Thankfully I am a regular excersiser. In high school I was in the cross-country running team, along with 5 wourkouts a week with Alexis. As I got older, I started Pilates-----by far the fastest results Ive ever seen, and and gives a woman such a feminine shape to compliment her body. Long and lean muscles is what Pilates promises and it certainly lives up to it.

Ive tried the following:

Natural Hygeine: Its a diet that requires proper food combination. Basically, you cant eat carbs with protein.

Starving: Yeah, that was the first ever diet I ever did actually. It was one of those phases in a young teenagers life. I'd starve myself for days consecutively, drinking only water and exercise religiously for 2 hours a day. Bad diet though. I became very week, so I quit after about 4 months.

Portion Control: self explanatory.

Atkins: High protein, very little carbs. I did this for about 5 months. I felt great and looked very healthy. But I missed my fruits..........

South Beach: High protein, limited carbs, but you could eat fruits and nuts and stuff like that. Its what Im doing now. You should try it even if you dont need to lose weight. I dont need to lose any, but its always imp. to maintain your ideal weight.

And yes, working out is essential. I do.

The Drinking Guy Diet:Try to drink so much that you faint before the food arrives :D
Things are supposed to happen the way they happen. And the reason they happen the way the happen is because you try to make them happen in a certain way and may or may not be succesful.

The Drinking ... Diet:

Thank You, R_26i! ... But that's what is being done in the 'Parties' ... You are plied with assorted "cool drinks" - 'offclear', 'orange','yellow','colacolor' - ... 'appetiser' soup - 'tomato','vegetable','sweet corn','spinach','sweet badam' - ... then 'starters' snacks - 'spring rolls', 'small samosas', 'bajji', 'pakodi' - ... My Bet is after these 'Rounds' the Guests will have the Urge to go the 'Conveniences' or their 'Homes'. The 'Drinks' have filled most of the 'Space', the 'Appetisers' have in fact killed the 'Appetite' and the 'Starters' have finished You, er Your 'Meal'!

Follow me ... in 'Buffets' ... I go to Curds & Plain Rice & Pickle, if available ... And also to 'Sweets','Fruit Salad' and the Risk of 'Ice Cream' ... 'Others' I leave for Others!

The true definition of a diet is 'a way of life'. You have to change everything. Because cancer and heart disease runs in my family, my parents had us eating very healthy food when we were young, and the habit stuck. But since the low-carb craze began, I think we are more into that than low-fat.

i dunno the rationale behind blaming carbs only. carbs, if taken in excess are converted to calories, but fat is converted to sugars (ie carbs) and stored that way too. so ideally both fat n carbs have to be regulated.

this does not mean we have to give up one or both of them completely. our body needs carbs n fat, but not in quantities we consume. an ideal balanced diet wud contain everything, incl carbs n fats in correct quantities. and if not accompanied by exercise, a mere diet wud not help in maintaining good health.

such carb free or fat free diet shud be sustained only until an ideal weight is reached, but later its meaningless to continue with that. we are depriving our body of essential nutrients that way.

sugars (carbs) are important for energy. body burns sugar to generate energy. dont deprive your body of carbs for long.

thats my philosophy too...i am passionate abt food...but off late i have reduced the intake. no more stuffing till the top of the gullet. i eat till the level where i feel no hunger and my stomach is not heavy too.

if a person is physically active he/she can eat/drink anything and still remain robust n healthy. look at the army guys. most of them drink a lot but still are at their best health coz of their activity. after retirement they go down the hill if they just sit down all day drinking n exercise is reduced.

4 steps to good health:

1)eat right thing in right quantity.

2)exercise.

3)exercise.

4)exercise.

occassional/weekend binges are ok...we are not saints :D but we have to put extra efforts to work out the excess intake.

Avoid Fast Foods ... After Feast Fast!

by Happy Hyderabadi » Fri Jun 18, 2004 8:53 pm

Diet & Habits for Good Health

* Avoid Fast Foods ...

* After Feast Fast!

* Eat to Your 'Comfort' Level - Calorie Charts Mislead

* "Rest Awhile After Supper (Morning / Forenoon Meal)" ... 'Rest' is NOT SLEEP ... Stay Awake During Day and Sleep Only At Night, if Your Work Routine Allows It!

* "Walk A Mile After Dinner (Night / Evening Meal)" ... SLEEP After a Couple of Hours of Having Your Meal.

* Lunch is What You Have Out of Home ... Skip IT!

* What To Eat and How Much To Eat Depend On Age & Work ... For Age 6, 16, 26, OR 60, Diet Cannot be the Same ... If Same Food is Prepared For All in A Household, The Only Variable is "How Much" ...

* From Age 25 Onward "Maintenance Dosage" Diet may be Explored

* Doctors are Hopeless Dietitians, They Go By "Calories" ... It Does Not Help!

* Professional Dietitians May Not Be Doctors But May Help Develop Diets To Suit the Person, According to Age and Health ... Such Experts & Expertise Have To Be Developed!

The Golden Rule:

1 - Eat Breakfast Like A King - "HEAVY BEFITING" Meal

2 - Eat Supper / Lunch Like a Queen - "Spare Light" Meal

3 - Eat Dinner Like A Pauper / Beggar - "Spared / Sparing" Food

DIET to Live Healthily!

CAD, the science behind the carbs goes like this:

Your body burns both carbohydrates and fat as fuel for its energy needs. Carbohydrate is the first fuel to be metabolized. However, when you cut down sufficiently on your intake of carbohydrates, your body converts from the metabolic pathway of burning carbohydrate to burning fat as the primary energy source. This results in weight loss, and alot of it. In the absence of carbs, the body has no other choice than to burn the stored fat in the body.

RE: Diet

by Jaan » Fri Jun 18, 2004 10:15 pm

You should avoid, yes avoid! diets at all cost. The reason being: with diets, you don't eat the right amounts of nutritional value food, and your metabolism goes DOWN. When that happens, whatever you eat won't be digested fast enough for you to lose weight when you are nearing your diet, thus you become FAT AGAIN.

Try portion control, changing your food lifestyle and of course, lots and lots of water and exercise!

Feast / Fast ... Fast / Feast?!

by Happy Hyderabadi » Sat Jun 19, 2004 10:01 am

Feast / Fast ... Fast / Feast?!

* Which First / Which Next ... Fast ... Feast?!

Fast Before Feast is like an Appetiser; Fast After Feast is like an Antidote for "Hangover".

* Ergo, For Ms Aq81's Nikah Dawat in Dec, Fast from Now Itself ... To be Ready for BM Sahab's Menu: "Bagair Aaluu, Bagair Tamaatar, Bagair Bagaara Bingan" Vegetarian Delights for HH and "Other Specials" for Others  :)

* Chinese Diet is More Balanced They Say ... Indians Take More Cereals, Less Proteins and Lesser Fibre. The recommended Combination is 30 Cereals, 30 Proteins, 30 Vegetables, 10 Others ... More Water in the Day ...

* Steamed / Boiled Preparations May Be Preferred to Fried Foods For Better and Timely Digestion ... No "Carry Overs" ... I have seen "Constipators" Who Hoarded Their "In(di)gestions'" for Years and suffering ... Beware!

i know that Aqua. thats why i said these diets are good only till an ideal weight is reached. after that, it shud be back to normal but quantity-controlled diet.

as Jaan said whats important for long term health are Portion Control, Water n Exercise. the fancy diets can be adhered to for short term gains only.

As HH put it, the breakfast has to be hearty n filling. it'll supply enuf energy for the rest of the day. as the day progresses, the quantity of food eaten shud come down each time, with the least food eaten at nite. unfortunately most of us do exactly the reverse: start the day with a hurried and meagre breakfast and end it with a heavy, rich dinner at night. the reciepe for disaster.
