How westernized has Hyd become?

by Alexis---New kid on the block! » Sun May 23, 2004 10:13 am

:) Hi everyone!

This is my first message on this board. Im Hyderabadi of course, but I dont live there.

I visited India last in 2001. And it'd changed from what it used to be when I had lived there with my family in the early 90's. I marvelled at how its become such a metropolitan city. I felt a sense of pride and admiration.

But I truly wonder, how Westernized has it become? I noticed how women dressed and how freely girls and guys mingled/dated. I guess Hyderabadi society is taking a walk on the wild side of late? Has it become a bit bohemian and fancy-free?

I just dont want it turning into a Bombay or Delhi. Hyderabad has old world charm. Tradition and values play a big part, and I dont want it to be lost in the craze and madness for a glamorous big city.

Just a thought, no offence to anyone.

This is a cool site, reading stuff on this board really makes me home-sick. People living in Hyd right now----You just dont know how lucky you are!!!

Peace out! :P

its is westernizing slowly but surely. its still a long way off from being like Bombay or Delhi, but well on its way there. u are talking abt how women dressed n mingled/dated with guys. whats wrong in that? if thats westernization, i am all for it. there's no reason for guys n girls to grow apart from each other and not meet anywhere. culture n tradition is fine but change and modernity is inevitable. good thing is most parents have begun to understand this, as seen by the 'dressing' of the new hyderabadi girls.
u musta written this coz u've seen the negative side of westerniztion where ever u live. thats understandable. this is where the "Indianness" of Hyderabadies n other Indians come in. how ever "mod" we become, there are certain lines most of us (note the italics) dont cross. dont ya worry, hyderabad is not that westernized yet (note the italics again).

I'll be coming home for Christmas!!!

by Alexis » Mon May 24, 2004 8:39 am

Hey!

As a matter of fact, Deccan D, I'll be coming down later this year!!!! When its cooler, of course. Most probably in december, cuz thats when my semester at college ends for the winter break.

Well, I dont think guys and girls mingling is wrong per se. I "mingle" with my guys friends here. Its just that when I lived in Hyderabad, dating and club-hopping wasnt so common-place. Actually, I was too young to know. So maybe it all happened and I was just oblivious.

So I guess you must be a really modern kinda guy, eh, DD? Really out there, hip and happening? Ive been to Treasure Island and Pyramid. Those were the supposed cool places to hang out at when I lived there once upon a time. I hope the clubs have gotten better though. Cuz they mostly sucked.

And hows the drug scene? I wonder. I dont indulde in drugs or alcohol, but I wanna know whats going down in Hyderabad. Do tell.

Peace out!

Hiya Fellas!

Good to see y'all; Hey, CtrlAtlDel, how ya doin bud? Eversice I left itown in the 90's like Alexis, I kinda miss the place too n long to get back. But once, I'm there I see that there's very lil to see n do. Fot instance, when I was there in Dec 2002, my only buddy still in town took on a whirlwind tour of all the hang out places like UnderDeck, TDS(and the one above it...can't remember the name now). There wasn't much goin on n my buddy, who's a freequent visitor to all the latest watering holes in town, said that that's pretty much how it is - by n large!

Again dudes, I'm not at all criticizing the places. Thot I shud say that loud so that u guys don't jump on me :) neways, I like the idea of visitin the town, anyday. I never felt any culture shock when I emigrated, but...by golly, I've felt it the only 2 times I've visited so far; lotza changes, mostly in the when youngsters dress n interact, just as Alexis mentioned. Nothin wrong with that at all.

Cheers Fellas...good to see y'all

Hey,

No, nothing wrong with wearing Western attire. But I went to this store in Banjara Hills and was shocked to see the poor excuse for outfits there. They were reeeeally short, with necklines plunging so deep that I couldnt imagine what actually would be covered. "Hah", I though, "As if chicks here actually dress in clothes like these".

The lady who worked there was also the owner. She surprised me by telling me that clothes like those were all the rage. And selling like crazy. I was really surprised. Girls in Hyd. dressed like hood-rats? Yup, the city I was born in sure changed a lot......a lot for the better and a lot for the worse. Im all for progress and change, but not at the expense of all that is good.

I still love my city though. Cuz theres no place like home.

the problem here is that there is no pucca definition of what is good. its a flexible definition that changes with time and i feel so shud we...
a many years ago, it was considered bad for girls to wear trousers...look at the scene now..

I agree, CAD, theres no set definition for 'good'. But what I meant was that aping brazen western societies in the name of improvement is unnecessary.

I agree with the comment right above; as an example, when I was around the Lifestyle area, there were gals dressed in minis and form fitting tops. The only caveat was that they were too short (5'1'' - 5'4'' is considered short, to carry that kinda dress). And since ppl generally don't workout, the 'form' wasn't apt to be draped in those kinda clothes. But, they seemed not too concerned about it.

The best thing abt Hyd right now is the food - so many new places to try now; when I lived there, there was jus Havmor and Sarovar.

thats the worst part of westerization here...girls with bulging tummies wearing short nothings...eeugh... :x
same goes for men too....tight t-shirts n see-thru shirts on pot bellies....no one cares that just exercising the biceps is not enuf

ya...so many new restaurants in last 5 yrs....

another +ve westernization of hydbad is the Multiplex culture....tho we've caught on a bit late compared to few other indian cities

I guess the future would be the otherway round. With so many Hyderabadies in the west, the west would be easterised! The Hyderabadi way.

I wish, Vivek!!!!

Its the same scene in America though. Tall, short, fat, thin, and chunky girls and guys wear whatever they please. No matter how unappealing it looks, theyre always comfortable and at ease in their ill-fitting ensemble. But here they preach that you should love yourself for whatever and however you look like and express your individuality.

= Nirvana.... :)

actually, thats how it shud be...but sadly this cud discourage some to neglect their bodies and appearance...but thats another topic i s'pose...nothing to do with westernization.

i sometimes wear loud bright colors (sorta 'Hawaiian' is suppose 8)) that my family and many friends hate. i dunno if it suits me or not, but i get both curses n compliments for it. but bottom line: i love it... :D

I was at B&C for lunch y'day and saw a bunch of girls having booze party - smoke and short ( is there another word for shorter than short ? ) skirts. no doubt our city is westernized. :P
Let's get out of these wet clothes and into a dry Martini.

A booze party?! How young were these girls? Wow, I wouldnt think girls in Hyd drink alcohol in public. Well, its one thing if a lady is out with her husband and their having a romantic dinner with candle-light and bubbly. But its something else when a bunch of teenyboppers go out and get tipsy. :x
