Well Over-pampered in the sense, just cuz they are iitians, they get all the perks in life, atleast at the start of their career, which really matters.. i mean even though people frm other engineering colleges are on par or probably more deserving, dont get the deserved recognition.
<br>I do agree some iitians are Studs.. but not all..
<br>PEACE OUT

IIT\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'ains are studs?! -- I have\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'nt seen a single one (exceptions are always there, i don\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t deny). All IIT\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'ians I know are kinda book-worms and are miles away from so called \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'fashion\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\' ...someone who are lost into huge piles of books 24/7. They enjoy reading books maybe asmuch I enjoy reading/ studying a charming female. -- eH! Lets come to the point, they\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'re still cool and deserve the hyp they recieve ... IIT is touch man! Forget graduating in IIT, IIT Entrance itself is a killer and throws-out a very huge ratio of students appeared.

Are IITians hyped out of proportion???

by JustaLittleUnwell » Wed Nov 19, 2003 3:30 am

Johnny, I think they deserve the headstart etc. but one grievance I have is that their education is highly subsidized and in most cases the expenditure on the exchequer is not going to benefit the country, as they invariably leave the country for better opportunities. If there could be some way, whereby the emigrating IIT-ians would payback their subsidies - if not imediately, but atleast over time, like a loan repayment........

Sorry, didnt realize that. Are you in the engineering stream?
<br>Apart from the few NRI IIT\'s and few reservation category IITians, all IITians IMO are a eons ahead of the typical engineering graduate of India. Its not just because they are the best minds in India, but because they have got the facilities any undergrad of India, which a non-IITian, can only dream of.
<br>Best minds + Best facilities = Best students. IITians are the only people who get to do actual research while in college.
<br>But that doesnt mean that others are not good, it only means that IITians have more exposure to the latest and greatest in their field.

Are IITians hyped out of proportion???

by Anil » Wed Nov 19, 2003 5:53 am

Pampered by whom? The overseas Universities or the recruiting bodies? But isn\'t that the case with any reputed university or institute. I still remember, how the Little Flower or Chaitanya College students used to enjoy this hype. It was purely based upon the performance of the past students. Same holds with the IITs too. As MM mentioned, best brains and best facilities are indeed fertile grounds for geniuses. You might be aware that the IITians have made their way into Dilbert - an enormously popular comic strip about the corporate world in USA. It now has a character called Asok. It may not be critical or important but it certainly means that the role of IITians is getting increasingly acknowledged. And there can be no second opinion about the importance of IIT graduates in the US economy. That brings us to a sad fact - Brain Drain. We have discussed about this enough in other boards.

what J. said is absolutely true. i wouldn\'t say iitians came down to earth from heaven or something. but the way a person matures psychologically, technically or in whatever way there can be depends on the company he/she is in. most of us may be equally intelligent.. but when u set foot on an IIT, u are exposed to this vibrant group of people who are all pretty dedicated to what they want to do in life (most of them anyway). and u have splendid infrastructure, great faculty etc. and in iits, to be what u want to be, u don\'t have to start from scratch.. all these are definitive head starts compared to most other schools......
<br>
<br>there are exceptions though... ;)

yea Mayavi me in the engineering stream.. (btech) , well most of the points u said r true...but i doubt if (best brains+ best facilities) always works.. one also needs dedication... and the facilities are no doubt the best in INDIA but are they best in the world?.. but i m not complaining.... i m just gettin the facts out.. wat i think is, more than the facilities and the faculty, the company is the one which matters the most.. the atmo in which u spend ur 4 yrs., the challenges.. the culture etc... is really worthwhile... and that is the one which lays foundation for a brigth future... Before u enter IIT, u were the local best, but once u enter it, u r one among the BEST, and to become best among the best, u haev to fight hard..thats wat builds the NEVER-SAY_DIE attitude in most of the iitians in their career tooo.. Anyways, my bottom line is Ur OWN CALIBURE matters in the long run, whjetehr u r an iitian or a noniitan. PEACE OUT

Yea m aware of the character of Asok in Dilbert comic strip...
<br>There have been mixed responses for this \"asok\", cuz if u follow the comic strip carefully u will realise that in a way Scott Adams is trying to mock the peculiarity of the IITians\' working culture.., but on the other side some ppl (like me ;)) , dont really care about wat they r tryin to mock.. we r happy that our presence is being felt in the so called US of A... lol
<br>anyways... Ciao

A cousin of mine is studying at an IIT. I know for a fact that he\'s a sharp guy but a genius? That would be using an adjective a tad too prematurely. I know he\'s reeeeealy hardworking and thats made a helluva difference in his life. Oh and he\'s not a bookworm. In fact reading figures last or second last on his list of hobbies!!

it is true that some iitians show a feeling of superiority. as a matter of fact, it is not just iitians. u can see that in many places which are pretty good at the kind of education they offer. but in most cases, it is not harmful. it usually is just a display of attitude and a little attitude never hurt anyone. :)

<br>It\'s an great accomplishment (getting there, I mean) - shows you have a good IQ and/or discipline. Nothing wrong in recognizing it.
<br>
<br>Hype is all in your mind. If you feel inferior, you might look at things as hype. But again, people do being an IItan a lot of importance. What does it matter what most people think. It may make sense , or may not - Sanity is not statistical. What matters is what you think.
<br>
<br>Anyways, education or studying at IIT is no prereq for success.
