The plight of the Dalits has been a long up hill struggle since the establishment of the caste system some 3000 years ago, they still remain a neglected society in modern India. The tsunami and post relief and rehabilitation efforts similarly mirror the discrimination the Dalits face in other areas and in other walks of life.
let me highlight your statement
"they still remain a neglected society in modern India. "
Why do you say that?? There are many many laws and political / social organisations fighting for their rights , most of it indian.They are also politically so powerful today that those who are not dalits get into serious problem with the law if it is perceived that unjust is perpetrated. Do you know this ?
Everyone practice some form of discrimination but if the whole laws are against one section of people as it was during the apartheid era in S.Afrika then it is right to proclaim that one section of people are powerless and neglected.But that is not the case in india.Dalits due to political campaigns enjoy many many benefits in employment in governement , educational facilities and land ownership.There are many who have benefitted out of all these campaigns, But many still suffer because they are illiterate and the state machinery is corrupt and sloth.
For your information, there are also many people who are very poor, who are from " socalled" better castes who face one or other form of discrimination are also languishing and again the reasons of illiteracy, slothful and ineffective governance.Selecting only one community and highlighting their plight has become a fashion. This dalit horse has been flogged enough.
As for my credentials whether i am aware or knowledgeable, please note that you are just a trespasser and i live and will die in this country and among my people.All my schooling days have been spent amongst dalit communities because we were all going to the same school , sharing our food.I abhor any form of discrimination be it colour/race/language/country/religion or in indian case "caste".For the tsunami, i have donated 2 months of my salary to chief Minister's relief fund and collected various household articles from my friends and relatives for distributing personally to Tsunami affected families in Chennai.I did not ask them which caste or religion they belong.There are many many poor people in this country and i do not discriminate.
If i were you, i would have just asked for volunteers to help poor , leaving the caste reasons to indians!!
