I'm reading Zen Flesh, Zen Bones
and I'm thinking my brain is not
quiet enough. I put the book away
-turn off the light
-lie down
try to cultivate no-mind.

Then a Japanese beetle crawls
up my pillow and tells me
he's figured out the sound
of one hand clapping -

that it's the same noise
dust makes when it accumulates
under my bed.

I tell him this is a startling revelation
for [i]an insect without hands
-without flesh
-without bones.

Pillow Talk - 1 / 3 / 05 : Rest and Relax in PILLOW

PILLOW — The historic hotel in Pillow has reopened after being closed for five years.

The hotel, at Union and Market streets, has been renamed The National Hotel Pillow.

"Our mission is to bring the historic hotel back to life for the enjoyment of patrons and the community," said Ken Newman, one of the partners who own the hotel that doubles as a restaurant for dining ranging from bar fare, family dinners to fine dining.

Newman and Marvin Artz, who both live in nearby Jordan Township, bought and renovated the brick hotel, which is painted white with red shutters.

They purchased the three-story building from a bank in Alaska at the end of 2002.

While the hotel sat vacant since 1998, Newman would drive by and "felt it was a shame for such a beautiful old hotel" built in 1864.

"We decided to open it up as a restaurant and hotel," he said.

When they bought the building, weeds were growing all around and junked cars parked in the back.

Their major interior project was expanding the kitchen. They upgraded the building, doing much of the work themselves. The owners repainted the inside, sanded the floors and restored the rooms.

The hotel contains a large dining area that seats up to 60 and the dining area with the pub holds up to 50. In addition, the hotel has 12 rooms on the second and third floors. "We intend to improve the rooms as business improves," said Newman who is also a Jordan Township supervisor.

American Airlines' Decides To Go Pillowless

American Airlines Inc., is pulling its pillows from most domestic flights as a cost-cutting measure.

# At no-frills upstarts WestJet Airlines Ltd. of Calgary and Jetsgo Corp. of Montreal, a no-pillow policy was in place from the get-go.

# "It was really a cost-saving measure from the beginning," said Jetsgo spokesman Brad Cicero. The airline doesn't provide blankets either.

"Everybody's looking to save money and this is one way of doing that," he said about American Airlines' decision to go pillowless.

# American Airlines, the world's largest carrier, said Tuesday that pillows will disappear from first-class and coach cabins on all domestic flights except transcontinental trips and flights to Hawaii, beginning next week.

International flights will continue to be stocked with pillows.

American first tried pillowless flights last November when it cut them from its MD-80 fleet, used mainly for short-haul flights. Now it has extended that policy to its Boeing 737s and 757s as well as its Airbus A300s on all domestic flights, according to newspaper reports.

An American Airlines spokesman said passengers could use airline-supplied blankets in lieu of pillows.

The Dallas-based airline said the measure will help save hundreds of thousands of dollars as it makes for quicker cabin cleanup, allowing for faster plane turnaround times. The move also reduces the cleaning bill.

THAT THOU ART : "Sleepless Pillow"

The identity of Brahman and Atman (the embodied soul) has been expressed in the well known Vedic formula as Maha Vakya (great dictum) "THAT THOU ART".

# The direct meaning of the word 'THAT' comprises the conditioned Brahman (associated with the limited adjuncts of creation, preservation and destruction and endowed with Omniscience, Lordship, Omnipotence and similar attributes) and Pure Consciousness which is its unrelated substratum.

# Likewise the direct meaning of the word 'THOU' comprises the jiva or individual soul (associated with the limiting adjuncts of the body, mind and the sense organs and endowed with such traits as little knowledge, little power, and dependence), and Pure Consciousness which is its unrelated substratum.

# But there is also an implied meaning of the words 'THAT' and 'THOU', namely Pure Consciousness itself, unassociated with any limiting adjuncts. It is common practice to explain a statement through its implied meaning when the direct meaning contradicts actual experience: when we say that a red hot iron ball burns something, we say the direct agent of burning is the iron; but the implied though real agent is fire, unassociated with iron.

# Again in the statement "He spent the night on a sleepless pillow", the word 'sleepless' does not refer to the pillow but to the person who used the pillow. Similarly in the Vedic statement 'THAT THOU ART' the word "ART" denoted the identity of 'THAT' and "THOU", which directly refers to the conditioned Brahman and the embodied soul respectively. But this identity is obviously absurd, since they are poles asunder. Therefore, we must explain the statement by its implied meaning.
# The identity is really based upon the Pure Consciousness which is the unrelated substratum of both. The limiting adjuncts in both cases are the creation of ignorance and therefore unreal; so these must be discarded.
# Therefore the statement "THAT THOU ART" really conveys a
transcendental experience of oneness which is beyond the body, mind, senses and ego and the sensations associated with them. When a person realises this oneness with Brahman. he is oblivious of the idea that he is an embodied being.

In the middle of the ceremony, the best man turns to the groom and asks, "Do you have the rings?" Just kidding, not to worry of course, they're on the ring bearer's pillow!

Fun and easy to create, start off by selecting your favourite ribbons. I used a combination of pale blue, pink, and ivory. Lay the ribbons out into long strips and attach them to a piece of paper using a stapler. Run ribbons the opposite length, again attaching them to a piece of paper.

Next, begin to weave the ribbons: over and under, over and under. Then, sew up the edges, leaving a beautiful woven piece of fabric. Attach it to organza, then stuff the entire pillow. Finally, attach the two rings (one for the groom, one for the bride) with a ribbon.

The ring bearer's pillow, making all of your wedding dreams come true!

A Shiny Life: Ann Elizabeth Pillow

It is a tall order, being shiny. The world can be a pretty dark place, and being bright and luminous, reflecting the light of God’s love, can be difficult, even risky...

We are all here because of Ann Pillow’s premature and unexpected death. Her sudden death has left us reeling and grief-stricken, and our loss is beyond words. She died of a heart event, of natural causes ... She went to sleep after eating dinner with friends, and she didn’t wake up. It is not God’s will that any of God’s children die in their youth, in Ann’s case at the peak of her brightness so far. Heart attacks are no respecter of persons, and Ann’s family has a history of early cardiac attack, having lost a cousin’s son to one when he was young.

So we look at her days-ordinary days in which she met friends and went to work-and what strikes me is that there is real radiance in Ann’s life, a brightness that comes only from living a shiny life. And this shine is more than just a metaphor. Her co-worker Cindy Lowmae wrote the following in a letter to the Pillows Mary Ann & Barry:

There are many things that I think of when I think of Ann. Mostly, I think of her joy-both the joy she exhibited and the joy she brought others. She was a great person to work with because nothing was ever dull when she was around. She was so full of fun and laughter that it was contagious. Once last year, when we were a bit too stressed at the office, she organized Shiny Day. Everyone wore shiny clothes to work, like satin or silk, and she and a bunch of us wore glitter and shiny makeup. The glitter that came off of our clothes and skin stayed in the office carpet and upholstery for months! I know that this might sound silly or frivolous, but was the perfect cure for a tough month. In the midst of all the deadlines and madness, we had something to laugh about. For weeks, we continued laughing whenever someone spotted another fleck of stray glitter. It was wonderful. Ann was very good at sensing when others were taking themselves too seriously or feeling low and lifting their spirits. One of her many gifts was the ability to uplift people. …

Barry and Mary Ann’s daughter came early into their lives, three and a half years into their own five year plan to have children. Ann was born on February 17, 1976, right in the middle of the birthdays of two great America lights, Lincoln on Feb.12, and Washington on Feb. 22. She was the first baby born in the new hospital nursery in Fostoria, Ohio. ...

Pillow shams should add charm to the bed whether it is a twin bed with one pillow sham or a queen- or king-size bed with two pillow shams.

I eliminated cutting out six pieces of fabric when I decided to cut the fabric for my twin bed pillow sham like I was preparing the matting for a picture using a print and a solid color fabric.

The print fabric for the center of the design is cut from the center of the outside print so the design is in complete alignment from top to bottom and side to side making the pillow sham picture perfect. This also eliminates a break in the design of the print fabric at the corners.

A standard pillow is 21 inches by 30 inches. The finished size of the pillow sham before the ruffled edge is placed around the sham is 22 inches by 32 inches. The increase in the size allows for extra ease when placing a pillow inside the sham.

The fabric on the back of the sham can be cut from muslin or solid color fabric and is 23 inches ...

Coimbatore: An 81-year-old Yoga expert claimed that pillow was the main reason for majority of human diseases, including heart, eye and ashthma.

Blood circulation to the brain, which commands all the movements of the body, gets choked, when a person is sleeping, with his head resting on a pillow, Yogaraj P Aiyadurai, treasurer, Tamil Nadu State Yogasana Sangam (Madurai), told reporters.

Claiming that he had carried out research on the adverse impact of the pillow for the past 20 years, Aiyadurai said people, without using pillows, had the chance to live more, without any type of diseases and even without grey hairs.

Even students, without using pillow, were found more intelligent than those who regularly used pillows, he claimed.

Saying that using pillows would lead to asthma, since it prevented proper oxgen supply, Aiyadurai claimed that pillows were also one of the main reasons for increasing incidents of heart attack, following non-circulation of proper blood to the vessels.

Pillow has direct influence on eye and teeth, he claimed, and advised to use own palm as a rest, while sleeping.

When I first read this, I couldn't tell if it was a joke (i.e. The Onion style) or if it was serious. Turns out it's serious, at least to one person. This Yogi did 'research' on the adverse effects of using pillows on all things human; eye & teeth health, intelligence, heart strength, even grey hair. His conclusion is absolute: don't use a pillow :) But I happen to like mine, thank you very much!
