well, since it will become a shareholder and profit driven organisation it will b forced to incorporate a more transparent way of functioning hence reducing the chances for brokers to do frauds and scams which will mean the aam aadmi (individual investor) will b much safer.

:P

as i see it,an aam admi (Like me for instance) would be one who has no interest in shares & bourses and leads a safe existence far away from the madding crowds of dalal street....

yes,the economic impact will be borne more or less by him,but what the diff a bit of naming and so-called transparencies will bring into his (or even my) life,i don't comprehend!!!

It is indeed very difficult for the aam admi to understand what impact it will have on him as he mostly stays away from the market...but a better run stock exchange is a key to a good economy. But the fact is earlier when the exchange wasnt properly regulated, very few individuals dared to invest in the markets, which is not the case now. Today an increasing number of ppl. are developing interest in the markets which exposes them to a gr8 amount of risk. You urself will in the future b in a similar situation, either directly or indirectly (thru mutual funds). In such a scenario a better investment environment will only b good for the individual.

As for the economic impact of the demutualisation on the aam aadmi, there will only b positive impact. u'll not b taxed to demutualise the BSE. :P

Theres a good chance that tomorrow one person among us will b holding shares in BSE Ltd. which will b traded on exchanges just like any other companys shares. In such a scenario he will have a say in the functioning of the company and can question its decisions openly. This obviously has to lead to a better run company and a better run capital market which has a gr8 impact on individuals.

hmm...some food-for-thought from the economist d00d :P

but the number of shareholders on the BSE is really a huge number, ain't it? how can any individual have any say unless there are a board of directors sorta stuff.and i presume there already is one in place. So all the de-whatever-isation will do is to make the dealings more transparent to the public,am i rite? and to know the intricate goings-on in the deals, one has to have some limited knowhow of the lingo/processes etc, ain't it?

and an aam aadmi won't have that I suppose.....most of them rely on brokers or agencies.what does this de-whatever-isation gonan do to make those brokers et al more accountable?

Well let me shed some light on how BSE used to function and how BSE Ltd. will function.

For the last 130 years BSE was managed by a group of brokers (BoD boleto poore brokaraanich bhareso the) which was also referred to as an 'association of ppl.' It was a mutual entity, maane not for profit. Now, to be a broker and the controller of exchange gave them a chance to make merry at the expense of the other smaller investors. Brokers being profit oriented guys exploited the situation nad made sure no one got hold of them. But in 1994 NSE came into existence. NSE took away a lot of business from BSE (number of brokers trading) as it offered a technological edge in the form of electronic trading and a settlement procedure which was way more convinient than the crowded floors of BSE. Evetually the BoD at BSE had to give in and they introduced electroic trading too....lekin bahut time ke baad as they knew it wld. affect their control over the exchange.

Post de-mutualisation the control will move to the public. 75% of BSEs share aill b issued in an IPO (dont kow when). To be fair to BSE it has adopted a lot of changes in the last 10 years. to day it is not at all similar to what it was then.

As u have pointed out broker's do most of the trading for the individuals, which means the stock exchanges do affect their lives (indirectly hi sahin). Therefore a better stock exchange for the brokers is good for the individual too :)
