Filter Coffee ...

by HH » Sat Sep 10, 2005 11:12 am

Filter Coffee

A coffee filter is a type of coffee machine that is lined with a porous filter. It is either manual or automatic beaver. The automatic drip coffee maker utilizes filter paper, which sieves the sediment. Coffee making is a fine art that is specific to each region. Whether it is the Italian espresso coffee machine or the cappuccino or latte or the Madras filter coffee. South Indian coffee is prepared from dark roasted coffee beans. Sometimes chicory is added to make for an interesting twist. The coffee powder is compressed gently in a coffee filter and boiling water is poured on top of it. The brewed coffee results in a thick decoction into the receptacle at the bottom. Served with hot milk and sugar, this frothy foamy coffee is a connoisseur's delight. Guests to most south Indian houses are greeted with a steaming hot cup of filter coffee.

Healthy Coffee

Caffeine in the coffee is known to increase the levels of dopamine in the brain. This in turn improves the feeling of well-being but can be addictive. Caffeine also mimics adenosine, which makes the brain more alert. Little wonder that coffee is known to be stimulant! Drinking a cup of coffee is known to calm an acute attack of asthma. One school of thought believes that drinking excessive amounts of coffee will lead to higher blood pressure. But another point of view is that caffeine reinforces the arterial tone and improves coronary circulation. The beneficial effect of coffee on tired muscles and nerves is the reason why a cup of coffee can be extremely soothing after a hard and tiring day. Caffeine is said to stimulate the adrenal gland secretion as well as the thyroid function.

Chicory ... Substitute For COFFEE!

by HH » Wed Oct 12, 2005 4:48 pm

Coffee ...

Chicory

Chicory (Cichorium intybus) is a hardy perennial that was brought to North America from Europe in the 1700s, and is now well-established across the continent. Though chicory has a variety of uses, it's best known for its association with coffee.

At many points through history, coffee has become unavailable or too costly. During these times, people have often turned to roasted chicory as a substitute. Folks also used to make coffee from roasted acorns, yams and a variety of local grains. Anything was better than going without!

The root of the chicory plant is long and thick, like the tap-root of the dandelion. When dried, roasted and ground, it makes an excellent substitute for coffee. There is no caffeine in chicory, and it produces a more 'roasted' flavour than coffee does. Many coffee producers offer blends with up to 30% chicory, which cuts down on the caffeine content of your cup. But many folk enjoy a cup of 'coffee' made entirely from ground, roasted chicory.

Another perk about chicory is that it's more soluable in water than coffee, which means you use a lot less of it when brewing. Very economical for someone on a tight budget.

Chicory also offers extra health benefits that you wouldn't normally get from your cup of coffee. It is reported to help cleanse the blood and improve the health of your liver.

The young leaves can be used in salads, and the root can also be boiled and eaten like a vegetable (it's related to endive and radicchio). It's also grown for cattle food in Europe. The flowers are blue-purple, and [i]will open and close at precisely the same time every day

Tapioca Milk Tea ... As Fun Coffee Alternative

Tapioca Milk Tea ... As Fun Coffee Alternative

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Chai latte is so ... compared to this drink.

Zen-conscious Southern California ... another Asian fad: bubble tea.

Also known as boba milk tea or tapioca milk tea, the drink is showing up at tea shops across Los Angeles and Orange counties, with similar success in San Francisco, New York and elsewhere. Its backers think they may have stumbled onto a fun-to-drink alternative to coffee.

A popular import from Taiwan, the frothy beverage is a mix of tea, milk, sugar and giant black tapioca balls served hot or cold. The gummy rounds the size of small marbles are sucked up, with a little effort, through an extra wide straw.

"I love the boba," said Pamela Faulkner of Venice, whose 13-year-old son introduced her to the drink several months ago.

"My son loves it so much I have to bring him after school every day. It's the only way to get him to do his homework," she said.

Salesman David Tan said he and his co-workers go out for boba about four times a week. "It's something you crave when you're thirsty."

The craze began in Taiwan during the early '90s and made its way throughout Asia. The United States was the next stop, with tea shops debuting the drink in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Seattle and New York.

"You can see more and more stores opening in the Bay Area," said Andy Jiang, manager at The Sweet House, which specializes in tapioca milk tea. He opened a second San Francisco store this year, but said competition is fierce, with three tapioca milk tea shops on the same street.

Vendors hope to market it as a relatively healthy alternative to soft drinks or coffee.

Cool Coffee

Cool Coffee

Image

The 'Convection Plant' Prototype
" ... I thought about the possible problems facing a pumpless, convection-driven cooling system and realised that if it was going to work then I would have to bear in mind the old maxim: 'Compromise is the Enemy of Achievement'.

Most of the above rules seem like common sense but with a passive convection system, there is very little incentive for the water to flow and the problem of friction becomes serious. The 'radiator above the CPU' rule came from an Israeli website which suggested this was good practice. (The website was referring to a pumpless cooling system for buildings -not as good as air conditioning, but dirt-cheap to build, run and maintain and *certainly* better than no cooling at all).

I made some design rules:-

* Make the water-flow as straight as possible.
* Where a change of flow direction is needed, give the water plenty of room to make the turn.
* Make the pipes large diameter to reduce friction.
* Eliminate all restrictions smaller than the pipe diameter.
* Radius the entrance of holes to minimise restrictive turbulence.
* Place the radiator above the CPU.
* Take the extra trouble to make special adapters for the pipes to avoid possible leakage problems.

Most of these rules seem like common sense but with a pumpless system there is very little incentive for the water to flow and the problem of friction becomes serious.

^^^^^ COFFEE! ...

* COFFEE ROASTING
"How coffee beans are roasted can have a huge impact on the taste of the coffee in the cup. There is no perfect roast, however, different beans can greatly benefit from different roasting techniques and degrees of roast. Thus the art of roasting and the never ending quest for the perfect cup of coffee.

Lighter roasts, often referred to as a cinnamon or light city roast, produce a sharp and acidic taste. Medium roasts, such as City or Full City, generally bring out more flavour in coffee and is a popular middle-of-the-road choice of roasting styles today.

Darker roasts, such as light french, espresso, and French have a fuller flavour often with caramel overtones and with a bittersweet tang developing.

Very dark roasts, such as Italian, dark French and Spanish have a smoky and often burnt-like flavour. The darker the roast the less likely you are to taste the flavour nuances of the coffee and the more likely the char of the bean."
* DEGREES OF ROAST

# CINNAMON - light brown and dry surface, tastes like toasted grain with sour acid notes.
# LIGHT CITY - medium light brown, traditional norm for eastern US market.
# CITY or MEDIUM - medium brown, normal for Western US and all of Canada, good to taste varietal character of bean.
# FULL CITY - medium dark brown, oil drops starting on surface, good for varietal character, bittersweet notes starting.
# LIGHT FRENCH, ESPRESSO - darker brown with oily spots or some surface oil, more bittersweet caramel flavours, acidity muted.
# FRENCH - shiny with oil, also popular for espresso, burned undertones, low acidity.
# DARK FRENCH or ITALIAN - very shiny with oil, charcoal tones evident, very low acid.
# SPANISH - nearly black, charcoal tones dominate, flat taste.

* THE PERFECT COFFEE ...
# Personal taste counts for everything. Taste and the occasion should be the primary factors. ...
# On a general basis, the Central American coffees have a lot of snap and acidity. Tanzania and Sumatra add body and richness. Mexican and Guaternalan coffees add sweetness. For those who wart more sweetness and a unique flavour, search out an aged coffee such as Indian Monsooned Malabar or Bali Negara. Distinctive flavour and aroma comes from African, Indonesian and Colombian coffees. The rich, winey, almost chocolatey flavour comes from Ethiopian Mocha, Kenya, or, if you wish to splurge, Arabian Mocha (made with prized (and hard to find) North or South Yemen coffee).

* The Great Philosopher- and Great Coffee Drinker- Fredrich Nietzsche has the last word. "All of Life", he wrote, "is a dispute over taste and of tasting".
