This is not an argument on whether people spit paan or anything. i have been in maharashtra for 15 years now, and i know that people spit paan, but on walls and such object. have not heard of people spitting pan on females, though.

There are cities, and then there are problems exclusive to them. If you love your city you should analyse the facts and accept them. ignoring problems, and repeating 'I LOVE --- CITY' will not solve them.

Delhi had a problem with pollution, and the people accpted it, took responsibility. now it is a lot better in Delhi. If they also would have taken the easy way out, and kept on blabbing 'I love Delhi' and 'there are no pollution problems in Delhi', then maybe they would still be breathing in poison.

Any problem, however small has to be solved; it does not go away if we ignore it.

I dint argue about people spitting paan, i was only making an observation regarding the police official's statement which was,"("Moreover, spitting is a typical Hyderabadi offence. Step into government offices or any other public office and you'll see red tainted walls and floors," adds C V Anand, DCP, Central Zone.)". I just wanted to say that there is nothing "typical" about "spitting" and "hyderabad", and he does not say about spitting on people mind you. People in responsible positions should carefully consider their words before saying them. I have no issue to discuss otherwise.[/b]

I'd really like to know if any girl found herself the target for paan spitting in any other city. I travel a lot... visit small towns as well as big cities. I've not even been here a year and a half and I am involved in such an incident 3 times. Its just that it happened nowhere but here, and I find it disgusting.

Moral Sense

by enigma » Wed Nov 03, 2004 10:11 pm

Arti i read ur post and i fully empathise with what happened with you. Women have always been victims of harrasment in our society its not only confined to areas like places of work/bus stops etc it can happen anywhere in any form, this form of teasing remains an isolated incident, no one knows about it i am hearing this for the first time that too when my friend told me about it.

Incidents like these do happen and the victim is not able to lodge a complaint nor can she express her digust, hence people have conditioned themselves to believing that its harmless behaviour. Awareness needs to be generated otherwise there is no hope. i appreciate ur efforts for atleast making a beginning and letting a handful of people know about this but this issue needs to be tackled in a larger perspective it has to start with making an effort in creating a balanced society (in thoughts, actions) which is a high ask but not impossible.

Next time god forbid if it happens again u confront the problem headon and if possible punish the person responsible so that one brave action of urs can make 10 people think before they do such a thing again

i knowl this would just remain a topic for discussion and would go on for ever without any concrete solution to it as we all like to express our views sitting in the comfort of our rooms and telling this should be done that should be done, but if we can spread the word around maybe it would help women to be more alert and responsive to such a situation. Its not a question of such incidents happening in hyderabad or in delhi its a question of the mental makeup of society as a whole which needs servicing, a place has nothing to do with it.

Mankind is broken loose from moral bands

:( let all of us get it back on track in whatever way we can, at least a beginning should be made somewhere :)

Thanks enigma... I guess this is just the beginning. Like I said, the more aware people become and realize that this is not acceptable... the easier our lives will become to some degree

No where was it mentioned that only men harass women (or is it understood thats the big question becoz u did interpret it that way). but since long the behaviour of men with women in general has been a bone of contention in our society. But to keep the human society alive u need a peaceful co-existence of both the species so its mandatory that they behave properly with each other to make the world a better place to live in.

I agree that only perverted individuals can indulge in such activities to derive feelings of superiority, aggression, and boosting of their ego's. Instead of making this a gender war lets try and find a way out to lessen such kind of incidents in future. Wish the world was full of gentlemen then we would not be racking our brains over such issues.

Women spit on other women on the road?

Just kidding. I'm glad, like CAD, to see the turn that this discussion has taken. But you know what CAD... the people who agreed initially are still agreeing that this does happen. Most people who didn't agree to start with, haven't changed their minds even now.

What i would like to say is people who indulge in such disgusting acts should be guided to channelise this negative streak into gainful activities. What is lacking is enforcement and a proactive approach.

Its a mystery that the world though is full of sensible, and responsible people why are we yet to wake up. We are supporting these elements in society, unwittingly . It is time we painted this menace in the dark. We all together should work towards this instead of teaching women the use of chilly powder, blades and knifes as means of self-defence we should believe that what is happening is not right and then try and put the same thought to the next person whom we come across, i am sure that would make a difference.

A futuristic plan of action would be encouraging boys to have a healthy interaction with girls which to a larger extent would eliminate such despicable behaviour, and encourage them to grow up in a atmosphere where they get to understand each other ( dont think all this looks good when written as i had written in my previous post we can make a beginning the approach might be different)

Some people change with the times, and they are the ones who survive. Some are lakeer ke fakeers, and these people have a very hard time trying to make through life with their rigid principles and unchanging attitudes/ideals.

well ur futuristic plan is ideal in a eutopic world. some things are deep rooted in society. i will give u an instance of how eve teasing is percieved. i was sittin with a fren o mine on the road and he was eve teasing this gal and i asked him what pleasure does he get out of it. and the reply i got was that the girl feels important when she is eve teased. i am talkin about this situation in a student filled town in karnataka. (the guy was from a very well off family). now on the other side of the coin there is this lady who is at the receiving end (from a stinkin rich and urbanised family) confesses saying that when she goes back home from college (for the vacations) she finds it real odd that nobody is noticing her and feels very weird about it. how much weirder can things get ?

she was a really good fren o mine and she told me. and when ppl are not noticing her, weird need not necessarily mean bad or hurt that ppl are not noticing her. its jus that these girls got so passive to eve teasing being a part of their life that in a normal situation she felt different. anyways dont you think that the soln to this comes right down at changing the education system ?

personally i think moral education should change a lotta things in the system. i beleive kids end up being good adults when they have the right teachers to teach them not only subjective content but also morals.its just so sad that the concept of moral education is paid little heed to. there shud be workshops at the adolescent school level to imbibe these morals to make a better tommorow which will be ridden of social menace

C'Mon People

by A Hyderabadi Girl » Thu Nov 04, 2004 10:44 pm

Hello people...

Before i present my views i'd like to mention something I am a 21 yr old girl born and brought up in HYDERABAD.I Love this city and i mean it.
:)

Also I am use a scooterrete to commute..i've been doing so for the last 4 yrs and I reside in Jubilee Hills.

Aarti....I am really sorry for the odd incident (s) that have happened with u...I am sure every one of the incident is unintensional....

I've known known hyderabadis as real bad spitters...but never as bad as being discussed here.

And regarding the roads mentioned...i walk/drive through that place atleast twice a week...and guys i've never experienced anything of this sort....yes, i've been spit on once INTENTIONALLY...but surely not in my hyderabad..i was in MUMBAI when i was on a tour with my classmates...and worse, the rascal turned back to smile and wink at me!!!

People in hyd have become habituated to use the roads as spitoons. They do this when they walk...and when they drive, they surely dont intend to spit on people

Hyd is really safe

Take my word for it! :)
