dream pub

by mark » Mon Feb 21, 2005 1:20 pm

nostalgia for home..

so what is your dream pub/night out?

my dream pub:

a kind of dank, dreery, cave like environment, with concrete floors

and the kind of lighting that looks like candlelight,

but isnt (the sort you get with 50 years of ciggerette smoke on the lightshades), a place thats all corners,

smell of stale beer and smoke. sound of beer kegs being manouvered into place behind the walls.

The splutter and hiss as the first pintglass of the day is filled with yellow foam.

Pint of Guinness and cheese and onion crisps for me, thanks. saturday afternoon, people are wandering in.

get a band going in one of the many corners, something lively and traditional. nice warm fire, sheepdogs scattered around.

Old men suck on pipes, and look as though they have something important to impart. Same again please Tony.

The games on the telly, we're getting hammered again. The band takes a break, Dylans on the radio. We're filling up now, seats are short but there's room at the bar.

Rounds are started, the game finished, and the band strikes up again. Keep them coming Tony,

another packet of crisps too when you're ready. Up and out now, we're in dancin mood and the band's givin it socks.

the pub is pulsing with energy, and people are flowing in. It's wall to wall stuff now,

the taps are goin non-stop, barmen are sweating, there's a queue for the ladies toilets, some cheeky ladies are using the mens. Another pint if you will Tony. Packet of salted peanuts this time. The old men talk of the last time we won the championship. Talk of the price of a pint. The weather. "I remember, I remember".

The music swirls around us, making dancing as simple a matter as breathing, and as necessary. Threads in a carpet, woven together by music. Guinness again please Tony! Creamy smooth and silky. Arm in arm we swing and reel and jig and dance and twist and turn. Under and over, bright eyes shining, not a care in the world. gettin late now.

One for the road there, Tony. And a whiskey too. sure make it a double. Bands knackered, gives it one last umph, then folds for the night. crowds rush to the bar for last orders.

bell rings, lights dip, get them into ya ladies and gentlemen! There'll be no lock-in tonight. One more quick one for me Tony. Cheers, lad. Come on now folks have ya no homes to go ta? Come on now folks finish up there please! we're open again at 11 tomorrow mornin.

have ya no homes to go ta?

man, thats sounds so celtic. i am sure u are home sick.

anyway, my dream pub... for an arvo drink would be a quite river side patio with those wooden stools and fresh chips wiht that swet chilly sauce and that coopers pale on the tap, as u said with a lovely head. any dark ale would do too (not a great fan of warm irish beer though).

for a night out, i would go to a dingy underground bar with a lot of lava lamps (thats if they dont have burning candles to prevent fire hazards), middle eastern furniture, with a faint smell of hash in the air, and a band playing reggar rock or arfican drums all night thru (more of a DnB kind of music) not much stampede.

for a night out, on happy stuff.... i dont care a shit as long as the lights are dull, technocraftic and the music is rave. and not to mention... thye faint smell of hash in the air.

my dream pub:

1) comfy sofas/armchairs to sink into

2) dim lighting, with option of reading lamps at tables, if u want to relax with a book.

3) soft ambient music. DJs n loud music not allowed. decent place to hold a conversation with friends, without straining to hear or be heard.

4) bartender who knows his cocktails

5) knowledgeable waiters

6) kingfisher drought

7) great eats

8) great pub lunch/dinner

9) free beer nuts (peanuts)

10) no nonsense like couple entry on weekends etc.

11) open from 11 am

12) closes late (1am or later)

i agree. if i want something strong then i'll have whiskey neat. if i want a nice, refreshing long drink, then i'll go for beer. KF is a bit weak though. And KF strong doesn't taste so good. Sand Piper was a favourite of mine last time i was out here (best pint i ever had was in OOty, on a balcony watching the mist roll in.)

Getting back to the intruiging discussion -

My dream pub is much like the ones described above, but I would like just one itsy-bitsy addition. I would like a giant screen......no, not for movies, but for sports.

I would love watching a game on a huge TV with a large bunch of friends screaming our asses off in satisfaction or disgust, whilst the waiters brings in the beer, vodka, whisky without being told to.
